Coming To A Popcorn Bowl Near You

Daily Photo

I drove to Ohio a couple weeks ago, taking any non-interstate route available to enjoy the fall scenery and some Hoosier-Americana with Steven.  Since my destination was north and west of Indianapolis, the landscape was limited to flat land and a sea of corn fields, but the route was not totally without charm.

For instance, one unique sight during this time of year is the occasional isolated dust storm seen floating ominously in the distance, like filthy smoke signals coming from someone lost in a corn maze.  It became a fun game for us to "Spot the Dirt Clouds."  It was especially interesting when the clouds were close enough to the road to see what was causing them, shown below quite clearly with this photo taken by blsamuel.

Thanks, Ben, for submitting your fall photo!

The dustbowl shot makes Amy's blog!

Hmmmm maybe I should've also sent the one with the cloud of black belching smoke from the tractor pulling the wagon but I don't think the corn hadn't started unloading nor the stalks and cobs flying....

Love the link to goofy named towns...

I've been to a few...

Gnaw Bone (more like drove through on SR 46 between Columbus and Bloomington)

Gas City (as in natural gas, not flatulance, on SR 22 / US 35 between Greentown and I 69)

Michigan City (dunes)

Santa Claus (Holdiay World home to a couple of gnarly wooden roller coasters but my rheumatologist says no)

Warsaw

Russiaville (in Howard county, near Kokomo)

There is a Mudd Lake but it's just a small lake closer in size to a large pond in Marshall county.  Can't remember if I've been to pretty lake.

I'm surprised they left off Tin Cup (made Hee Haw - I should be embarrassed I know that) population 14 or 15, had crossed out and wrote in larger number.  Actually drove through it once or twice.

Surprised the, the Hoosier South American towns weren't included:

Chili (pronounced shilie), near Denver

Brazil

Peru

Mexico

(all pretty close to Kokomo, except maybe Brazil, as is Russiaville.  Tin Cup is/was somewhere in the vicinity)

Dang.  How could I forget Bean Blossom.

I've driven through it also.  One of my uncles went to the bluegrass festival there a few times.  He had a blast.  Said everyone got along, had a great time, left their instruments lying around and everybody went home with their own stuff.

The outlaws used to live outside Columbus off of SR 46.  The father out law now lives in FL and the mother out law in Greensburg IN (the place with a tree growing out of the courthouse tower).  Brown county is really spectacular in the fall.

And if you like American painters, check out the T.C. Steele State Historic Site which includes the last home and studio of Indiana artist Theodore Clement Steele (1847 - 1926).  Well worth the trip IMHO.  www.tcsteele.org
