Human Wheels

Back in the late 80s and early 90s you'd be hard pressed to find a bigger John Mellencamp fan than yours truly.  I bought every album from the Johnny Cougar days right up until the late 90s - and even a couple imports.  It was the release of Mr Happy Go Lucky (featuring "Key West Intermezzo") that finally soured my affections after years of tireless worship.  I just didn't love it, and I haven't loved any efforts since.  But the older albums continue to be mainstays in my iPod rotation.

If I were to rank my favorite albums from those days, I'd put Big Daddy and The Lonesome Jubilee at the top, but the it's the single Human Wheels from the album of the same name that has always been, to me, his finest work.  I can't think of a song with more honest lyrics that capture the entire human experience.

Although I no longer consider myself an avid fan, Mellencamp's ability to withstand the test of time in the face of criticism, his unique sound, and his unwavering political convictions has always held my respect.  And the fact that he's a Hoosier, and has continued to be a Hoosier, doesn't hurt.

I've always enjoyed John Mellencamp's work.  Even some of his newer stuff.  Maybe not a big fan but enjoyable tunes.

Hard not to like a fellow Hoosier who hit it big but still seems to embrace his roots and still lives in Indiana.

And being an IU grad, there's a very good chance you've seen him around Bloomington a few times....

"Minutes to Memories" is my fav Mellencamp original single or is it "Aint Even Done With The Night"

His cover of Van Morrisons "Wild Nights" is incredible.

I do not seem to like his latest LP as well as the one before it but I havent given it alot of ear time either.

As an alternate give Dane Clark's solo work a listen. Especially the his first release.

Human wheels had some great stuff and was an interesting contrast to dance naked. He has gone through so many phases including his artist period pre and post whenever we wanted but.....turning thirty when Lonesome Jubilee came out I was convinced he had gotten into my head and turned all the thoughts that were bouncing around into words that impacted me profoundly. While I'm not  a huge fan today I am proud a fellow Hoosier contributed so much to music.

His "Nothing Matters and What If It Did"  LP...

I like everything on that.

I have early releases never heard in the USA too.. British imports I bout in the UK in the early 80's.

Like you, I can't say I really love his stuff now.   In singing with my band in College in Bloomington, IN all his material was great to sing and play along to.  The crowd would sing it back to you, at the Bluebird or Jakes or College Frat/ Sorority dances and I always loved kids like me in B Town that felt a real connection with our "local" hero.

I have a relative that was a HS Principle in Seymor Indiana at the time he was a student.  John was a good student, short, got caught smoking cigarettes,   studdered some, as a kid younger was the football team mascot...LOL  hardly a rebel he protrayed..   His parents would of KILLED him. LOL
