I'm in it for the Cracker Jacks

Is there any other sport so woven into the fabric of boys' lives as little league baseball? I know soccer is wildly popular these days, and a lot of kids seem to be going the hockey route, believe it or not, but there's just something about baseball. Which boggles my mind because it can be. So. Boring. I mean really. A lot of sitting around. A lot of standing around. Ten seconds of glory or humiliation, depending on hitting a cork-filled ball with a stick. And inning, after inning, after inning. So why is it so great? Why do we keep going back for more?

I have a theory. Two words: bench bonding.

Cracker jacks.  Peanuts.  Bleacher bums.  I don't really get baseball either but it does have a long almost mythical magical history.
