The early London phone system had live operators place each call so the numbers were comprised of your neighborhood name and digits. Hence, living in W2 we had Bayswater-1803. When automatic switching came in, the GPO just used the first 3 letters of the district to create 7 digit numbers &thus we became 229-1803. My mother still has that number (lots more digits on the front now mind you)!

And yes, my grandparents in Brighton had a party line phone. Used to fascinate me as a kid, who were these other people?
