The review of westerns continues. Phil and Matt discuss the ground-breaking Sam Peckinpah film, The Wild Bunch. Debuting in 1969, the film helped usher in a level of onscreen violence that had never been seen in American movies. And never have such an insufferable bunch of broken down cowboys been so much fun to root for!

NOTE #2: Congratulations to Lee, who won last week's contest! We'd love to see Will Ferrell as Dude and Denzel would be great as Chance. Hopefully we'll run a contest a month from here on, so be on the lookout.
To start off a series of six western films, Phil and Matt discuss Rio Bravo. The film is famously a response by John Wayne and Howard Hawks to the storyline of another classic western, High Noon. This one is largely meant to entertain and expresses its underlying ideas in that context. The conversation turns to how some aspects of the fun hold up, while others are destined to be viewed as outdated by younger audiences.
Also to celebrate the kick off of this western cycle of films, we will be holding our first contest. Win this poster if Phil and Matt choose your present day re-casting of Rio Bravo as our favorite. The characters to recast (with description) are:
- Chance (strong, established 50-something actor)
- Dude (40-something actor better known for comedy or music)
- Colorado (teen heartthrob, musician)
- Stumpy (older actor who can do a comedic turn)
- Feathers (20-something actress)
Enter the contest by posting a comment to this blog. Remember, not all comments are published immediately!
