I know some of you have owned or still own Frazier speakers and I am wondering if these are worth investigating. I know little about these. They are a two way incorporating a horn and what I believe to be a 12" woofer. I can get these cheap and am waiting for the seller to call me with a time tomorrow when I can audition them. If the cabinets are in good shape and they sound alright I may just snatch them up. I am hoping to go there tomorrow armed with a little bit more info. than I have right now, which is next to nothing.

Please clue me in on these if you can.

Tom

DJ'ing a friends wedding this weekend

Second 'gig' this year. Will be fun to stretch the Chorus' legs. The couple was originally going to have their cousin use his mini component system for the dance. They brought it there and set it up. The venue is huge. His component system didn't quite cut it. Not in the least. In a panic, the mother of the groom called me and begged to borrow my stuff. I told her I'd be happy to set it all up and run everything. Should be a fun time.

Market Value for RF-82s?

Hello all. I was trying to do a little research but can't find anything recent. I am looking at a pair of rf-82's for sale. As per the buyer they are 3 years old which is right around the time they were discontinued. He's currently asking $600. I think it might be a little too high I am not sure and just above my price range. I cant find any recent sales in here (or maybe I am just too dumb with the search feature). All I find is threads with sales from 3 years back. Any help from the forum is greatly appreciated as to what market value is for the speakers right now. I'll have him send pics. He says there's a tiny nick on it when they were moved but that's it and has offered to send pics, but I don't want to waste my time if he's asking too much and won't budge. Thanks.

1964 Cornwalls

Can anyone give me any insight on how to change the grills on these bad boys? Center channel is for now a Forte II elevated off the floor to mate the height of the HF drivers. Center is driven with a DBX Driverack PA+. I am using the LF section normally devoted to Subwoofers where the right and left channels are combined to a single output. I set the Xover points all the way out on the high frequency side and low frequency side to get a full range signal.

So I have the ability to adjust the gain and the delay of the signal. Plus I can also roll off the low end to clean up the bass which I have already played with and discovered that rolling off the bass of the center channel at 50Hz took alot of muddiness out of the sound.

So what I want to know is how should I go about dialing in the center channel? I can generate test tones and measure with REW or I have a test CD Point of Reference that has a number of usefull test tones like pink or while noise. I also have a RS db meter.

I have the DBX right next to my listening chair and I have been trying to just listen and tweak. I noticed that when I got to a certain delay that the center channel image faded or blended in better. But on further delay it reappeared then disappeared again.

If anyone has a procedure in mind or a link to a resource for one I would be much obliged.

Thanks

Digital vs analog

I read many people are going back to vinyl vs CD's or music server for sound purity.

Thoughts on a digital crossover vs analog crossover affecting sound.

output

Would anyone know if it is possible to test a receivers output on each channel in relation to a certain volume level? With the Cornwalls, however, the original 3/4" thickness was used. The results, in my opinion, are insufficiently stiff cabinets that resonate and "sing along" with the music, particularly in the bass. My Cornwall 3s (henceforth "Cs") sound very loose and boomy in the bass frequencies.

This is not a room artifact. The same location where the speakers are placed has worked well with many other speakers (including Cornwall ones) without the bass issues that the Cs have. This is not a result of slap echo - the room is treated with ATS panels and has worked well with many other speakers.

This is not an amplification artifact. The Cs have been tried with a half dozen different amps, none of which adequately control the boomy bass. Some amplifiers do seem to be slightly better than others. The "tightest" that I've tried so far is an Emotiva XPA-2 (300 wpc, solid-state). Although the boom is not gone, it is somewhat reduced with this amp.

Assuming, therefore, that the remaining looseness and bloat in the bass is a result of cabinet vibration, my question becomes: Without damaging the resale value of the Cs, what modifications are feasible with the speakers that will reduce cabinet vibration? Ideas that I've come up with (but have not yet tried) include:

Screwing a small ATS pad to the back of the speaker - foam to the cabinet, for panel control

Taking some open-cell foam and making plugs for the port openings

Using self-adhesive lead wheel weights to add mass inside the cabinet

Using poly fill to stuff the cabinets

Damping the woofer struts with adhesive material and using a felt sheet to attenuate the woofer's back wave for higher frequencies

So the point of the thread is to ask: Will any of the proposed mods improve the bass of the Cs, or do I need to consider other choices? If the latter, what choices might be effective?

Thanks - Boomzilla

New HT Build

Finally Statred on the HT/Music room build and thought i'd post a few pics

of the progress so far with more to come later. the room is 12x25x7.6

Framing begins

Klipsch La Scalas Too Big For Room?

I have a pair of la scalas on the long wall of a 16' X 11' Room with 7' high ceilings. The speakers are about 12' apart and I sit about 1 feet from the 11' wall so if you factor in the 2' of the la scalas I'm about 8' ft away from the the center of both speakers. Should I sell these and go with some Heresies or Quartest?

I'm simply wondering can speakers be too big for the room. I hate to sell them. I have a pair of Cornwalls those might be too big too, but they have less depth.

Also what are your thoughts on placement in such a room, should speakers be closer together given the distance I sit back. I'm so close that unless I'm in the center of the room I can hear the speakers individually.

Please let me know your thoughts thanks.

Cornwalls in Princeton NJ

I wrote the following yesterday and sent it as a "reply" to another posting in this thread, thinking it would be posted in turn. I cannot find it on the Garage Sale site anywhere. How this site works has baffled me several times, not least of which is that clicking on "Help" sends you to a completely different and unrelated organization.

===============================================

Folks:

I'm sorry for not having resolved this transaction yet, but the problem is the result of the facts that (1) I'm retired and so never have enough time
to do everything I should, (2) I've NEVER tried selling anything online before, and it took months of 'research' to figure out what probably would
be a fair offering price, (3) I only discovered The Klipsch Community Garage Sale after all that time, and this was what happened right after
that:

5/2/13
5:36 pm -- DickR joined Garage Sale
6:07 pm -- Posted the offer of Cornwalls in Princeton, etc.
8:07 pm -- magaret dubois requested pictures [which I didn't know how to post until much later]
9:07 pm -- Budman explained my error in reading the serial numbers (I've thanked him)
9:07 pm -- Mechman asked where I'm located, and for pix
11:08 pm -- Yankeefrank asked me to "get back to me" [was this an offer to negotiate, which I didn't want to get into]
11:08 pm -- teeshots sent his email address

5/3/13
1:38 am -- CLUBSTA or John asked to be able to come from NYC to "meet you over the weekend" [my weekend was both full and jumbled up, so I couldn't
                respond]
11:08 am -- khorndog [a suggestive nickname in this context? ] sent an incorrect telephone number, which she later corrected
11:38 am -- lifter asked "where in P-Town ..." and that he could have someone pick them up ...

I have since spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to take, and post, some pix, and then how to actually GET AN ACCEPTANCE of my offer.
I've seen the discussion about who has priority and whether anyone has actually offered to pay $1200 and come pick up the goods. The situation
was complicated by the fact there would be difficulty in setting up to demonstrate the speakers. I also was concerned about payment (it's embarrassing that I never thought about PayPal until someone mentioned it today).

Anyway, a little while ago I left a phone message at the number that I thought was the first person to actually imply an acceptance.
