    Cleaning a pair of Cornwalls?

so i recently acquired a pair of Cornwalls and looking to do a little cleaning this weekend. both cabinet and grills are a little rusty to i want to give it a dust up.

i am thinking of bleach, warm water, and soft cloth for the cabinets? as for the grills, i am hoping a little vacuuming would help. i also read somewhere about shaving foam and tissues?

if any one has suggestions or reccomendations, it would be much appreciated.

after the cleaning, i am planning to get some wood oil to give the cabinets a coating or two to brigthen it up a bit? is this a good thing?

    thanks all...

Whatever you do, don't use bleach. Besides, bleach doesn't clean things. It oxidizes things, meaning it kills teeny living creatures and it whitens/fades things. It'll rust anything metal, including fasteners under the surface of the wood, potentially causing the rust to bleed through to the surface.

Murphy's oil soap is great. Alternately, dishwashing liquid will work fine. Just don't use too much water.

Rusty?! I didn't realize CWs came in metal cabs. Wink Seriously, what type of cab are they (a pic would be helpful)? If its raw birch, I'd suggest using mineral spirits applied with 0000 steel wool and wipe off the excess and dirt followed, if necessary, with a very light sanding (be extremely careful around the edges). For Oiled Walnut, etc. follow the mineral spirits with a fresh coat of boiled linseed oil (use a lint-free cloth and rub it in well). For lacquered finishes, follow the mineral oil with a light application of Lacquer Thinner to re-amalgamate (work the surface quickly, applying with a brush along the grain. It will look great, then dull after an hour or so. Use 0000 steel wool very lightly along the grain to buff the finish followed by a paste wax). That should mimic the original Klipsch finish nicely but if you want a shinier finish, use some pumice or buffing polish after the steel wool and before the wax.

If the cabinet has been finished in polyurethane or shellac, try the mineral spirits or turpentine wipe but you may have to strip the cabs and start from scratch. Without seeing the grills, I wouldn't want to recommend anything beyond a good vacuuming and maybe a damp wiping with mild detergent. In any case, bleach will do more damage than good and unless your willing to remove the cloth, avoid using a steam cleaner as it will warp the frame.

Just start with a very light touch and add more elbow grease judiciously. Hope that helps. Have fun

I would not use anything with water.

For the walnut wood, it just needs some furniture oil such as so called lemon oil.  You may have seen that I've used a scotchbrite pad very gently with the oil.  Maybe burlap is better if you need a even less scrubbing action.  Essentially you are just washing the walnut and then taking off the excess oil with a clean towel.

I don't know about the grill cloth.  I'd try a vacuum cleaner with a small attachment which could pull out some of the dust.

Thanks William. I am going to take a trip to Home Depot this weekend to find this "lemon oil" and give it a try.

Re: Cleaning a pair of Cornwalls?

CBR is Corwall Birch Raw.  Meaning it came from the factory in birch plywood with no stain or finish.

I was wrong to call it Walnut.

Try the oil in an inconspicuous spot, maybe the riser in the back and see if you like the result, It will probably darken the wood

I have never use Murphy's Wood Soap.  But the label which I read at the grocery store shows it is to be mixed with water.  Water is bad for raw wood.  A close reading of the label shows it is to be used on wood with a finish (not raw) like a oak floor.   So it is most likely just a detergent.

I believe that the BR series was meant for people who wanted to try their hand at tinting with a stain and then a shellac or varnish cover.  I've seen some passable results in professional cabnetry or even some examples here on the forum.  To my eye, it never quite has the depth of hardwood veneer.

Some people have used Watco to finish these. Watco comes with colors which you might like and it is not too big a job. but you must watch out for the issue of combustion of rags which is described on the label.

That's odd, I always thought a CBR was a Honda...
