    WTB... MEN220 & FS SAE-2800 PEQ

I know the likelyhood of anyone having and wanting to sell it is about 0.00000000001% , but I'll ask anyways..... McIntosh MEN220 room correction/PEQ unit. Reason, Going to replace the SAE2800 PEQ.

On that note, the final 2800 is also for sale; $265 firm (I'll pay shipping), comes with manual. Perfect operating condition. Only ONE issue. There is one knob that is broken (and was like that years ago when I got it). It has been serviced, cleaned, lubed, etc. Currently in use in man cave, but will also have to go in order to plan for the MEN unit if I can find one. The 2800 is the rare, very big one; rack mount, giant handles, the usual...

PM or email me; preferably email if in re: the 2800, and I'll send a picture, etc.

    Cool

Hard to find an McIntosh MEN220. There is a long waiting list.

There have been problems with this unit and the use of XLR connections...

    Thanks JC!

I read the entire thread (all 21 pages...), and thought about my "application". It will be in "processor" mode, 2.8V unbalanced output setting (RCA cabling), fed by an ESSC (passive) which has the MR85, MVP861 as the inputs (I select what I want), unbalanced (RCA cabling). It will then go to the second ESSC and split out to one, two, three or all four amps (MA6300, MA6500, MA6500, MA645) via their tape or CD high level inputs. I checked with Chuck Hinton at McIntosh and he confirmed that it would work just fine as a replacement for the SAE unit. He said it comes "pre-loaded" and I may find one of the pre-loaded profiles to be the same as the current adjustments used with the 2800. I may hook it up first (if I get one....) to the computer and set up several profiles (Klipschorn's only, Klipschorns & stacked Heresy's, Heresy's only, Klipschorns and Cornwalls as centers, all four amps, etc). Total of 16 possible profiles, and once I set them, I can recall them dependent upon how much "Voodoo" I want to use.

I was concerned, of course, about issues described in the thread; but the gentleman with the MEN and the 501's is playing with stuff way outa' my league!!!

I recommend you DO NOT go forward with an MEN220 purchase. I can tell you right off it WILL NOT do what you are saying. McIntosh told me it would work for me too. They were wrong. They don't know squat about anything non-McIntosh. First of all MEN220 only has a 6 EQ profile memory. You can only load 6 profiles.........nowhere near the 16 you mention. Each profile is made of a mix of 6 PEQ settings you enter. So it is a 6-band EQ and you get 6 profiles.

The other issue is that the method you describe of connecting your unit will render all of your EQ out of the system when Room Perfect is run. If you are using EQ for any speakers or network compensation you have Room Perfect will not work. I found this out first hand.

The part no one ever talks about is that the MEN220 is probably without a doubt the very best active crossover I ever heard.......or didn't hear. It is extremely transparent and the A/D - D/A process is probably one of the very best on the market. Funny thing is everyone buys the unit for Room Perfect and doesn't even realize the best part of the unit is the crossover.

Trust me, save your money. It won't do what you think and you'll have a very hard time selling it. MEN220 was designed specifically for biamping McIntosh speakers and running Room Perfect.

Sorry, just trying to help. It cost me 4K to learn this lesson.

    Mark,

Huhm....  The way I understood it was that the MEN will do what I want, but you are saying that it will only hold 6 "profiles" rather than 16?

I had not intended to run "room perfect", but to do it manually by listening as the PEQ was adjusted at the freqs in question. Then store a profile(s).

I guess I will need to reconsider whether or not to forego looking for this unit and just keep the SAE.

Just wanted to say that I talked to Marshall for awhile last night and had a really good conversation.  While what I posted above about my experience with the MEN220 is true, the MEN220 will work just fine in Marshall's application.  As we discussed it is an expensive propostion but a very very transparent A/D - D/A process and a very clean sounding unit.   Marshall only wants to use it for the EQ section and it should sound very nice with what his plans are for it.  So sorry for jumping the gun on what I thought might be a misapplication.  I was just trying to help.  Again, it was good talking to Marshall.
