If your close to Wisconsin the weekend of June 23rd, come check this out !!

This is by far the best RC Airshow in IL and WI.  If your in the area that weekend, come check it out.  The airport is located about 1/2 hour north of Milwaukee.

    JM,

I hope that your event goes well. It is nice to know there are a few other RC'ers on here. I am one of the organizers of the Joe Nall (www.joenall.com) and we just finished our 30th Anniversy event. If there is anything that I could help you with, please let me know. Most of all, I hope the weather is good for you guys and you have a safe show.

I've always wanted to visit Joe Nall. That is the show or shows :)  Our show gets a lot of non RC spectators.  Last year we broke the 1000 visitor mark. Our club does alot of local community events especially with Children.  Most of our clubs sponsors are local businesses.  Our event is also a fund raiser for two local boy scout troups.  One troup cooks and and sells our food, the other troup parks cars.

Our club flies off of an old 2900 foot crop duster runway. We share the runway with an ultralight club and get a few planes landing. The air national guard like to use it ever few months for training too.  Our club is the official care taker of the property and has the best relationship with the land owner. He always tells others to contact our club to get permission to use the land.

This year having the Confederate Air Forse landing two WW2 Warbirds is a first for us.  They are flying in from a pancake breakfast elsewhere in the state that morning.  We have a hand held radio for pilots to call our airboss so we can clear the airspace of all models before they come in.

Weather is the key. We have been blessed in the past. I can only remember it raining once, and that was late in the day.

Nice to meet a fellow modeler on the Klipsh forum.  I am going to Muncie for XFC next weekend.  Are you going too?

     WC,

Anyone around your area do jet models? My last employer was working on flight controls on a military contract. We had a real jet turbine r/c plane that would do about 130 knots. The plane was a prototype for a larger mch 5 design. Pretty cool to see it flying.

I know a lot of guys do ducted fans with gas engines, but the turbines are a little rare (and costly). The engine in ours was around $12k IIRC.

    Bruce,

We have a few jets....This is one of a pair that come every year from germany....It has canards and has vectored thrust.

    Bruce,

These are true jet turbines not ducted fans and have been a major part of the RC Industry for years. I think the thrust rate is up to about 65 to 70 pounds now. At the past event we probably had in excess of a hundred jets there. The above Rafael has a thrust to weight of 1:1.5 and with the vectored thrust can do some pretty amazing manueavers. we had three jet engine manufacturers represented there. they are a lot more common than you are thinking. the cost per engine runs between 2.5K to 6k. Some of the experimental engines with a lot more thrust run upwards of 29K each. They are used primarily on drones and a few other applications. The speeds are halted by the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) to less then 200 miles an hour but believe me, they can reach much, much higher speeds. The AMA is the main governing body for the sport/hobby.

We test many types of prototype aircraft at the facility, throughout the year. the grass strip is 400 by 7000 feet.

I certainly do not want to hijack the thread......!

    JM,

I've spent a lot of time in Muncie on various projects but I won't be making the XFC this year. With the building project I am doing and getting ready for the September events at the flying field, my time is very limited. I will be at the facility the entire month of September as we have two major RC events and the Full Scale Fly In at the end of the month....! We will probably have 25 or so Warbirds there, plus about six or seven hundred homebuilt and general aviation aircraft. We are expecting about 300 for a Fly In Breakfast at the end of June. We have what we call the Youth Masters in August which is a great event.

We also use the CAP and a few other groups to help us with the parking,

I really hope that your event is a success, as you are supporting some great causes.

Thanks WC. I wish you the best at your events also.

I live about 1 hour from Oshkosh too.  If you ever come up to EAA Airventure please visit Smile

We had 3 turbines at our show last year.  Here are a few you tube vids where you can see the jets.  The 3D flying is also a big hit.

What does RC stand for?  I'm amazed at the level of detail in the controls -- flight control surfaces, ground steering, throttle, etc.  How many different things on the remote control?

    Larry,

RC stands for Radio Control. The radios we use now go up to 18 channels of operation and operate on 2.4 GHz. Specktrum technology has allowed this to be possible. We have done test with over one hundred aircraft in the air (T-38 Foamies) with no interferance what so ever. The old system which operated at 27 MHz was limited to fifty channels. The range of operation has also increased to well over a mile. We are limited by line of sight operation. There are many web sites devoted to RC, two of the biggest are RC Groups and RC Universe. If you would like more information just Google wither name or visit the AMA site. remember, everything that flies without blood in it was derived from model aviation.

    Larry

    RC stands for Radio Control.

The transmitters have two sticks or gimbals that work the 4 main flight control channels.  The right side stick is the same as the stick or yoke on a real airplane.  up and down controlls the elivators or horizontal stab on your tail,  left and right controls the ailerons on the wing that roll the airplaine left and right.  The left side stick up and down is the engine throttle, left and right are your rudder, like the rudder peddles on the airplane which are also tied into the the nose wheel for ground stearing.  Most pilots has at least two more channels that can be switches or rotery knobs to control other things like flaps, smoke systems, engine kill switches, wheel brakes, lights, bomb drops, really anything you can imagine.

It will be good to see you in Indy Saturday June 9th.
