My Velodyne F-1500R is Generating a High Pitch Noise!

Out of the blue my Velodyne F-1500R started generating a high pitch ringing noise, If I move it around and fiddle with the RCA's it will fade temporarily and the return. I thought it may be the interconnect so I removed all the connections from the subwoofer altogether and powered it up and it still does it. Is the servo crapping out on this thing? I don't really want to send this 100lb monster back to Velodyne in CA, I wonder if it is possible to send the amplifier and servo portion of it if that is what is causing it. What would be the SVS equivalent of this sub? The PB2+? Thoughts from the subwoofer experts?

First the problem with your receiver, and now your sub? Have you had any surges that you or neighbours know about? Brownouts may also cause havoc.

Take a visit to Avsforum.com and become a member(if you aren't already) and visit the Offical Velodyne Support Thread. You can get answers straight from Bruce Hall(President & CEO of Velodyne) and Curt C(another Velo employee(not sure what he does though)).

Tom V of SVS is familiar with the Velo lines, shoot him an email and he'll give you an idea. If I had to guess, I'd say the PB2 Plus will be capable of more clean output than the F1500R but down low the difference might get smaller and smaller.

Sounds to me like your Velodyne has an amp problem(amp/servo on the back plate),I heard similar problems when I purchased a HGS12,then returned the sub and upgraded to a HGS18.Well in my case I was told the amp was the cause.

For your information the SVS PB2-Plus outperform the HGS15 by a good few dB's,no matter how you look at it the PB2-Plus is a vented sub using two very capable 12" woofers and your Velo one 15" woofer with less travel in a sealed box.The PB2-Plus winns by a wide margin.

And the BASH amps used by SVS/Polk/Klipsch(no not Promedia) are very tough and should give you a trouble free operation for years. No servo control to cause additional problems, less complex too.

As earlier stated amp board was my first thought.

Velodyne is a good Company with a very good rep. You must have had a bad apple, and it also may not meet your wants, but give Velo a chance, they have a grand selection, and NO I'm not a salesman, just a happy Velodyne owner

Package and send the amp board back, call Velo and let them know in advance the problem, serial #, etc and you'll be looked after, stay in touch with the Dealer also(if you bought it there new, than still under warranty depending on your time frame, if not a private sale).

Re: My Velodyne F-1500R is Generating a High Pitch Noise!

Well it is 7 years old. It still works fine though. I can get it to go away for a bit by moving the sub around and tapping on the back a little. I have been turning the sub off and on with the remote control unit but it seems that the amp remains on since it is warm/hot. It has not seen much use lately since my Denon receiver is in for service. So I turned the unit off using the switch on the back and when I power it back up - No noise. I think the amp was just hot from being in constant standby mode. I am going to try to just start using the switch in the back instead for awhile and see if that works.

Make no mistake I love this subwoofer, it really digs deep and is extremely powerful it essentially annihilates the KSW-15 that it replaced. The volume is only set between 3 and 4 and it can move the walls and floors literally. I bought the unit used for $400 from the guy that I purchased my Khorns from last March or April so I cannot complain.

I will call the folks at Velodyne is the problem continues to find out how to go about getting it corrected. Thanks everyone for your assistance.
