     Brazilian Byrd                                       LP

    Charlie Byrd

    1965 Columbia Records  (2 eye)

    Amazon.com

Byrd devoted this album to the compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1965, at the crest of the bossa nova wave. Byrd had been among the first American musicians, along with Jim Hall and Kenny Dorham, to encounter the Brazilian beat, and there's a sure grasp of the idiom, particularly well suited to his classical guitar. Along with Jobim's best-known compositions like "Girl from Ipanema" and "Corcovado," Byrd plays rarer, contemporaneous treasures like the beautiful "O Amor Em Paz" and "As Praias Desertas," unfolding their melodies with loving care and subtle embellishment. The string and big band settings are tasteful and unobtrusive, a pleasant backdrop for the essential dialogue between Byrd's guitar and Jobim's songs. --Stuart Broomer

Hey there everyone, NICE...........Sorry for not posting any music/photos for a couple days, but I have been peeking in to see what you are a spinnin'  Smile

Dennie, first off, I am a LONG TIME fan of Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass since Whipped Cream was newly released back in 1965 when I was in 7th grade!  Then, about the same time the Baja Marimba band came out, and wondered if there was a connection.  Well, thanks to you, after all these years, the mystery has been solved............! Surprise  I see Herb was involved in the production of their albums at HIS studio A&M !!!

Ahhh, I see DEMO recordings here............  I just happen to have a Realistic CD of all cinema music !!!  I bought it new with my Realistic (made by Hitachi) CD player back in 1986 (CDs were really new in that year) and was my FIRST CD purchase along with a Telarc sampler that was out that year which I bought at Lechmere the same day...  Fun stuff.

Oh, and that bird on the album cover?.................for us parrot owners, thats a Blue and Gold Macaw Smile

    With all smiles,

                             Gary

    Re: Right This Minute

    What a great album...............

    Live At Blues Alley                                                       CD

    Eva Cassidy

    1997 Blix Street Records

    Amazon.com

When Eva Cassidy is swinging her way through "Cheek to Cheek" and getting down and bluesy on "Stormy Monday" on this live set from 1996, it's nigh impossible not to get swept up in her voice's vast, barreling force. Her full range, though, becomes most obvious--and soul-shaking--on the slower side, as with Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Water," Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Tall Trees in Georgia," and "What a Wonderful World." On these latter tunes, Cassidy's mix of aching clarity and rich warmth has a melting quality, speaking through the body to some evanescent presence that she seems to know all too well. She improbably makes Sting's "Fields of Gold" an emotional powerhouse just as easily as she makes Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow" an offhand declaration of feeling equal to nearly anything in the jazz vocal canon. In doing so she earns her place among the great singers--artists who could take any song and stamp it indelibly as their own. What Eva Cassidy had in her short life was an unbelievably perfect voice and a musical soul that grasped gospel, folk, blues, jazz, and all points in between as if they were mere stops on a single train ride. Alas, her ride ended in 1996, tragically early. --Andrew Bartlett

    Blues                                                                     2 CD Set

    Eric Clapton

    1999 Polydor Records

    Amazon.com

There's a telling subtext to this retrospective of Eric Clapton blues sides. Culled from recordings cut between 1970 (the Layla sessions) and 1980 (when Clapton cut his final Polydor album, Another Ticket), these sides finds EC exploring his beloved blues while in a fragile state of mind and body. After all, he was on heroin when he concocted Layla, and though he kicked that habit in the early '70s, he continued to test his tolerance for alcohol throughout the decade. When you think of the Clapton of the '60s, you think of the fire and ice of his playing with the Yardbirds, John Mayall, and Cream. When you think of his '70s playing, it's wearier and perhaps more reflective. (It was easy to mistake melancholic for mellow at the time.) The 35 selections included on these two discs find the temporarily deflated rock superstar leaning on the blues for support as he draws on likes of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and Little Walter for inspiration. Hardcore fans will appreciate previously unreleased versions of Bo Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me," a solo take on the traditional "Alberta," a 1974 cover of Willie Dixon's "Meet Me (Down at the Bottom), and a remixed live 1976 version of "Further on Up the Road" with Freddy King sitting in. Just about anyone, however, will be able to appreciate how this music reflects Clapton's strengths as a musician... and weaknesses as a man. --Steven Stolder

    Jazz 'Round Midnight                                                                CD

    Chet Baker

    1990 Verve Records

With his movie star good looks, brilliant natural gift for the trumpet, seductive vocals, nomadic lifestyle, addiction to heroin, and dazzling arrest record, Chet Baker was the personification of the James Dean-like jazz bad boy, especially during the conservative Eisenhower years. Born in Yale, Oklahoma in 1929, Baker got his first big break in Los Angeles in 1952 playing and recording with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. He then commenced his own roller coaster career, which included extensive tours of Europe. When he died under mysterious circumstances in Amsterdam in 1988, he left behind a vast discography.

This wonderful compilation collects 14 tracks (nine with vocals) that Baker recorded at his peak in the mid-'50s in Paris and the mid-'60s in New York City. Every track is stunning and shows him at the top of his game. His playing is clear and spacey, yet lyrical. His unique tenor vocals are disarmingly simple and stick close to the melody with just the subtlest variation. Highlights include "Everything Depends on You" with Kenny Burrell on guitar, "Tenderly," and "Exitus."

Recorded between October 1955 and June 1965. Includes liner notes by Alain Tercinet.

Personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet, fluelhorn); Alan Ross, Henry Freeman, Seldon Powell, Leon Cohen, Wilford Holcombe (reeds); Hank Jones, Gerard Gustin, Bob James, Bobby Scott, Raymond Fol (piano); Everett Barksdale, Kenny Burrell (guitar); Richard Davis, Jimmy Bond, Mike Flemming, Benoit Quersin (bass); Connie Kay, Nils-Bertil Dahlander, Charlie Rice, Jean-Louis Viale (drums).
