    What's a fair price for RF-7's?

    Hey guys.....I need some help.

What would be a good/fair price for a pair of used RF-7's....say in good condition?

Secondly, how much improvement would I see with the RF-7's over my current set of Quartet's?

I am just exploring the possibility of making a change.... I currently have Quartet's across the front (L/C/R).  Just wondering if it would be worth changing to the RF-7's and picking up a matched center.

I would appreciate any input and advice you have.

    Thanks,

    Hogfan

Better?  Hard to say.  That depends on what your ear likes to hear.  Different?  Certainly.  I'd expect the Quartets to be a bit more dynamic, with more bite to the mids and highs.  I'd expect the RF-7's to sound smoother with more low end extension, though the low end extension might not matter in an HT set up where there's a sub handling signals below 80 hz.

You might consider updating the caps in the crossovers on the Quartets first before moving wholesale to the RF-7's.

The longest distance from Point A to Point B is the upgrade path.

    Whell....Thanks for the feeback.

My Quartet's are used about 50/50...music/HT.  They sound good, but just looking at possible options to improve my setup.  I am not running a sub.  I am driving them with an HK 347 reciever.....which under 2 ch listening to music is delivering about 55 wpc.  Anyway, there is a pair of RF-7's near me for sale...$800 I believe....just want to make sure the price is reasonable/good in the event I decide to pick them up.  If I don't, re-capping the Quartet's is probably a good idea.

    Thanks,

    Hogfan

I may be wrong, but every thing I've read, and heard here.

    1. Quartets work with your present setup.

    2. RF 7's are going to require More Power (i.e. bigger Amp or Receiver)...........

    JMHO............

    3. So if you got the 7's then you would have to buy another receiver or Amp............

    Bill,

I had not thought about the additional power needed for the RF-7's.  I might just need to look into re-capping the Quartet's to help optimize their performance.  Otherwise, I guess I could look at something up the chain a bit in the heritage line.....Forte II, Cornwall, etc.

    Thanks,

Forte, though good would be a lateral move.

Cornwalls would be a Huge Leap for you................IF you have the Space and WAF ..............

I would normally think $800, give or take, for a good pair of black RF-7's. Add another $350-$400 for the RC-7. Add another $50 (RC-7) to $100 (RF-7) for Cherry or Maple. Add another $25-$50 for original packaging. Deduct $100 for significant grill problems.

    JMO.

That being said, I recently bought a very nice set (all three, in black) for $850, but I think I got lucky.

I would think RF-7s used value would jump up a notch considering they are making them new again from the factory - $2200 for a new set...  I would think a pristine used set would fetch 60%-70% of that value.

You got a heck of a deal and because of that your numbers may be on the low side. ;-)

Imo, the RF-7s at $1,000 to 1,200 would be a fair price given what is in the market today, with the RC-7 being able to fetch easily $500 at fair market value. Albeit, may be on the high end, but I wouldn't let mine go for those prices. Cool

RF-7s are posted here and Craigslist for sub 1000 all the time. But I personally would buy a pair of Cornwalls which can often be had for that same money.

You are incorrect in your assessment, the orriginal poster has a perfect perception of recent values. The economy, not the price of new speakers is driving used prices and while some small recovery has come back to K-Horn and LaScala, they are not fetching what they did a year ago. I search Klipsch on ebay at a very minimum of 3 times a week and his assessment of $800 for RF-7 and $350-$400 for RC-7 is dead on.

    Hogfan,

Speaking from the possition of an orriginal owner of Quartets and an RF-7 system I put together for my parrents as well as K-Horns with La Scala center, and an all TSCM settup (PRO-Theatre K-Horn) I will say the following. The RF-7s are more efficient and will play louder, but oddly require more amp to get good bass than the Quartet. I think my Quartets were more articulate than my K-Horns, although the K-Horns are alot more efficient and play louder. Three Quartets across the front are going to sound better then two RF-7s and an RC-7, I just bought an RF-7 that was converted into a center channel for my Parrents system for this very reason. As for home theatre, your center channel and your sub are your two most important speakers period!

With the above information, I would suggest spending your money on a good sub first, then two more Quartets so you have them on all 5 channels, or upgrading to Forte IIs. You will want a seperate amp if you go to the RF-7s smoething in the 200 watt per channel range.

I stand by my assessment regardless of what the second opinions are.

I have had both and for movies the RF's are the better of the two.  Lots of slam for action movies.  For music take your pick.

I do like the mid range horn better for music myself, but just as many people like the the 2-way.  800.00 is a fair price.  I paid

975.00 for one pair and 675.00 for the other( factory seconds).  Finally, if you are going to watch movies, get a sub.  It really adds to the show.

I really appreciate all of the feedback.

I guess I really should think about re-capping the Quartet's and picking up a sub.  Sounds like this could improve my setup quite a bit.

    Thanks,

    Hogfan
