5 watt SE amp - restoring the volume pot and upgrading power supply caps

Got this amp from Joe. Had one a few years ago but my guitar head brother took it because he loved the tone. Not much to do to this amp since it uses pretty high grade parts. All you really can do to it is plus up the power supply, add an anode choke, add a grid choke. Im going to plus up the power supply, and while in there restore the volume pot. Someone removed it during the amps past life. right now, the amp has 100uf of capacitance in the power supply. I like to have, based on the grear I have owned, and the type of music I play, about 300uf's per power tube. The power supply sits at around 300volts. I have 120uf mini caps rated at 450volts. going to put 4 of them in. Not much room in there, but I know it will fit, since I modded the first one of these I had. This amp is SS rectified so there's no problem with going beyond the standard 40uf's you find in tube rectified amps at the B+ voltage point (after rectification, before first droping resister and/or fists choke, in most cases).

This hobby began in 1966, when I figured out how to disable my dads stereo by swapping out the driver tubes for RF tubes. He used to like to blast the stereo during the school week til 1 in the morning.

my first crossover network project came in 1972.

my first DIY khorns came in 1986. I built as set of khorns using 18inch drivers, enclosed backs, and used them at an air force base in Germany during all army day.

here is the inside view cap board is going in the area with the red oval, volume pot going in the area with the red square.

here is the alps pot I'm going to use. it's about the nicest you can fit in such close quarters.

here is the alps pot installed. braided teflon wire running away from the power supply area. tight fit, but it's in there.

Re: 5 watt SE amp - restoring the volume pot and upgrading power supply caps

ok, we need a way to mount the caps. the amp chasis is only 2" high. The caps are almost that height. Not a lot of room to use capacitor clamps. The cap type is plug in which means it has very strong terminals instead of axial or radial leads. so we'll mount the caps horizontally on this point to point teminal. then bolt in the terminal on one of the transformer mounting bolts visable from the underside. The 4 120uf caps will be wired inparallel. need jumpers on every other terminal lug to connect all the - points on the cap. a jumper will go across the top row of the caps connecting every + terminal. the board with 4 120uf caps in parallel will ad 500uf's of capacitance. the amp has 100uf now, so we will have 600uf total or about 300uf per power tube which is the goal. note that one hole on the terminal was drilled out to fit onto the transformer bolt. you need to do this before the fact. if you try to do this with the caps installed, you might be in for some redo work since I broke 2 terminals trying to get the holes right.

here is the completed board ready to go in. teflon wire braided using 3 leads. an extra ground which always connects to the chasis on one end.

in this case, connecting the cap board is pretty easy. the main power supply cap has a draining resister across it. we will use that so that the draining resister feature is extended to our cap board. This provides zero resistance between the terminals of the original cap and the added cap board terminals.

here is the cap board installed and wired. one end of the point to point terminal is bolted in place using one of an output transformer bolt. the other mounting point of the point to point terminal is hot glued in place using auto dent puller hot glue....about the strongest your going to get.

here is the cap board and the alps pot installed. later down the road, 10ma grid chokes and anode chokes will be installed using the same horizontal mounting approach as the caps on the other side of the amp co located near the other output transformer.
