I watched that UFC pay-per-view (UFC 166), it was just a couple weeks ago. That particular fight was definitely one for the record books. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, love it, every last second. For the last round, Melendez didn't have to do a thing, but he stood toe to toe, and they had brutal exchanges, all the way down to the final second. What a fight that was!!!
I have been watching Gilbert Melendez since his earlier Strike Force days (Strike Force today, is as corrupt like boxing), and happy to see him make the change to UFC... Back in the earlier days, Melendez was called "Baby Face Melendez". Similarly, I've followed Diego Sanchez's career from way back, and he use to go by the title "The Nightmare", but subsequently changed to "The Dream", because he thought the reference to "Nightmare was too ominous.
Both of these guys are spectacular stand-up fighters, both are heavy strikers and neither one knows what it is to give-up and quit. Both fighters have always been enjoyable to watch. Early in that particular fight, Diego received a very bad cut over his eye, blood kept gushing in, and he would just brushed it off, and kept on coming. Several times the Ref. asked for a doctor look at Diego's eye, and every time the Doc. would let him continue. Spectacular fight all the way to the end.... There is not doubt that Gilbert Melendez will be a UFC Champion, it's only a matter of time.
Another spectacular fighter to watch (though I haven't seen him fight lately), and that grew up in similar circles (ala MMA-Strike Force) is Cung Le. Cung Le was the fighter that broke Frank Shamrock's arm with a kick, and prompted Shamrock to hang-up the gloves. I once got to meet Cung Le while in Sacramento, CA, at that time he was trying out for a minor acting roll in a fight movie.
On another note, I'm and old boxing fanatic from waaaaay back, or should I say, use-to-be boxing fanatic from way back. The UFC slowly but surely sucked me into the mixed martial arts fighting sports. For me, the corruption in all the boxing organizations has completely turned me off to the sport. All of it's organizations, WBO, IBC, IBF, etc., etc., have eaten away and destroyed the sport of Boxing. Too many main events are store bought, too many unworthy and undeserving challengers get a chance at glory because they're willing to pay for the chance. UFC has taken over the fighting business, and Dana White has done a fantastic job at keeping the sport legit.
Can't wait to see the next UFC event later this month, when GSP takes on Hendricks, that should also be a good fight to watch.
