Music Monday: A Movie Soundtrack

On my 3 week hiatus from the office (mostly unplanned), I struggled to keep myself occupied. Translation: from going crazy. Taking photos outside typically does a good job keeping my brain focused, but in sub-zero temperatures I had to be a little smarter than that. So what did I do? I saw a bunch of movies (all very good, incidentally): 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Hunger Games 2, Prisoners, somethingI'veforgottenandwillthinkofinaminute... But the one I want to really talk about is the surprisingly awesome The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Ben Stiller? Yeah, he's funny. Kristen Wig? Yeah, Bridesmaids was hilarious. Rated PG? Sounds like a decent movie to take Steven to. I wasn't expecting much. I mean, really, what truly excellent movies are rated PG these days, unless they're made by Pixar? We saw it on a whim, after pigging out at Steak n' Shake. I'm not much of a planner.

But oh boy, what a treat it was. I found myself crying at the end, inspired on so many different levels and completely in love with Walter. And Iceland. And soccer. And photography (all over again). And most surprisingly of all, Sean Penn.

Is it a perfect movie? Nah. But it's incredibly beautiful, inspiring, sentimental, and all played out over a kickass soundtrack. David Bowie's Space Oddity is a standout, featured prominently and in a pivotal scene. Bonus.

Saving Mr. Banks! I knew I'd remember the one I'd forgotten. Also delightful.

I have both at the top of my list ... Walter Mitty and .... Mr. Banks.

With the Mitty story I can finally find out the ending.  Ms. Ford, (my fourth grade teacher) failed to inspire me to do much reading; even this short story), back when I was in the fourth grade.  Bless her heart, she tried so hard.

Mr. Banks looks like fun.

Additionally, I find your comment regarding your hiatus from work somewhat disconcerting.  I sincerely hope that all is well....

Mr Banks was also very good and emotional. I'm a big fan of Disney's Mary Poppins, so it was near to my heart. I did read in advance about some inaccuracies to the story (for dramatic purposes, I'm sure), so that bothered me a little. Other than that, it was very well done. Emma Thompson is wonderful.

Don't be concerned about my hiatus. The week of Christmas I had two days off, and the other three were short ... New Year's week I had planned to be off...and last week, the snow and cold closed Steven's school for the entire week, so I worked from home. Which never is quite the same....  But school is back in today, and all is well :)

Oh, it has been said that the Walter Mitty movie is quite a departure from the original book, so don't look forward to closure. :)
