    • The active xo is programmed to optimize the speaker (AL6 or AK7) and drivers.  Using the active xo with other speakers and drivers would be sub-optimal.  I think you’d get away with it okay without modifying the doghouse, but I think the high and mid drivers and horn should be a mandatory part of the kit, and ideally the woofer too.  I’m not sure if the new 12” woofer would fit in the old style 15” woofer doghouse?  Might need an adapter ring or something?
    • I went with the Natural Cherry for the reason wanting their presence known. 😆Ordered them some 3 weeks ago and waiting for that phone call from my dealer to come pick them up. 🤪 Pairing them up with my MC462, C2800. Hope they will sing🎶🎶🎶
    • I have heard good things about REL subs and their musicality. I would look for a sealed sub, definitely stay away from ported.
    • I was in something like your situation t not long ago, except with KLF-30's. I have a Rotel RB-991 and 981, and both sing through the Klipsch. Expansive stage, soaring highs and goods lows. I too was looking for a Rotel RB-1090 or a Parasound. I ended up scoring a great deal on a Parasound HCA-3500. Talk about a beast, and at 350 wats per channel, it drives the speakers effortlessly. Now the Parasound has some extra warmth throughout the mids and highs, not quite as intense or "sparkling" in the highs as the Rotel's, but the punch in the low end is much more pronounced with the Parasound IMO. With that said, I don't think you would be disappointed with The Rotel 1090 or even the 991. The 991 is a fantastic amp. To me its a tossup, and comes back to personal preference and music choice.
    • Really appreciate all the inputs! This is such a great community. I think what you all just said really gave me the encouragement to just go ahead and start with something. Will probably scour the 2nd hand market first. Will keep everyone posted!
    • That said, an upgrade kit for AK6->AK7 shouldn't be too bad without passive crossovers. In that case you'd just need MF driver and horn, HF horn with phase plug, and binding posts.
    • I would argue that for someone who wants to get the DSP box (at a separate cost), they should be able to internally get away with just replacing the drivers, mid horn, hf horn, and backplate.   Actually, regarding the HF driver -- it's the same on the AL5/AK6 -> AL6/AK7. It's just a new horn that has an phase plug, external to the driver itself?   I guess what I'm saying is that I hope that the cost of parts without crossovers or doghouse isn't crazy. Once the cost of the upgrade kit + market value of AL5s gets close to the cost of buying the AL6, then there's not really any point.
