  1. I watched these on my computer and did not think much of them. Then I played them on the HT and seen the point of making the videos!. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwrbFj9r10Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTha0u_kIXc

  2. I know that there probably aren't a lot of you out there but I feel that this awesome speaker deserves it's own thread so here's my story: As some of you have seen, I detailed a little about how I came up with these monsters in another thread. So here is THE REST OF THE STORY. Set the alarm for 6:30 but woke up at 5:30 (go figure). Was on the road at 6:30 and had a really nice drive until I was about 30 minutes from Joe's house. He called to see how far out that I was and then dropped the bombshell: He would drop the price on the RC-64 so that I could buy all 3 speakers. A phone call to my wife resulted in her trying to beat him down another $100 (love this woman). She would agree if he basically cut his original price in half. He respectfully declined and I was cool with buying just the RF-83s that I was making the trip for. Once I got to Joe's house, I found him to be a great guy. Speaker nut like the rest of us. He gave me a demo of the towers, I looked them over, paid him and we started boxing them up. I can't imagine trying to move these things very far without the boxes. During the time we were loading them, my wife called and asked if Joe had accepted her "offer". I told her no. She then told me to pay him what he was asking. I then looked over the '64 and told Joe that I had to go to Bank of America to get more $$. When I returned, he already had it boxed up so we shoehorned it into my vehicle and I was on my way. My best friend lives in Boca Raton so I made a detour to visit him and his family. We had a nice lunch and I was once again on my way North. During the day I was in touch with Youthman about the trip and I texted him that I was carrying 3 boxes instead of 2. His reply was "No way". Yep. I had my matching trio. Total miles travelled: 537 over 12 hours. Rolled into the driveway at 6:30 pm and sat for a while with my wife. Her first question was "What did I get for my money"? I went outside and showed her a vehicle full of boxes. Not impressed. I then unloaded and unboxed them and her response was "HOLY S#!T, THOSE ARE HUGE!!!". We moved them into the place previously used by the RF-3II's and RC-3II and realized that they had basically swallowed up our room. Our living room is just a temporary spot for them until we have our HT so we will have to live with that setup for a while. After some mad scrambling with the receiver, we managed to listen to a few songs and then I brought in my sub and we watched the first 30 minutes of "Quantum of Solace". Wow. Just Wow.. Can't really give a review just yet but it will be coming along with some pictures. The room that they are in is NOT good for acoustics. I do NOT have an amp yet to let these fully breathe. I have LOST my setup mic for my receiver. That said, they still sound sweet. Can't imagine once they are in a HT. Youthman is the only person I know who owns these. Who else out there has a pair? Ron

  3. Well, shoot! I missed the poll thread about moving posts to proper categories and didn't get to input. It's cool a decision was made to leave it alone. I think it's best that way. As regards categories, I think changing them and adding more of them, without a real need, will be a futile task. As Chris (tigerwoodkhorns) stated, his habit (and mine, and probably most everyone's) is to check and post on their favorite 3 or 4 places. They are not likely to want to venture out into foreign territory to make an off-comment. They have friends and regulars right there, and they want these same people to see their off-topic posts as well. They don't want to tell them, "Guys, I posted something off-topic over there." I mean, let's look at it this way.... Chad put his poll in the "General" forum. Did he put it way down in the "Forum Suggestions" forum? Nope! Wonder why? It's pretty dead over there. Anyone who posts generally thinks whatever they have to say ought to be seen. That's why they tend to post where the traffic is. From my perspective, the 2-channel and General Questions forums are where the action is. That's where I pretty much limit my activity. Garage Sale is very good for its purpose. I have looked around there, but only when the purpose is to browse with an eye toward buying used gear. The rest is pretty useless (for me), although I would imagine the HT forum is very good for its purpose. If anything, I'd vote for less categories, and not more.

  4. Hands down worth the upgrade. The RF-5's have a more distinguishable low end that goes deeper than the 3 does and the presence is larger as well. Overall, it is a refined speaker and I love it!

  5. In my opinion its worth it. The RF-5 is not only taller, it has the same horn as the RF-7. Ive had the 3 and the 5, the RF-5 had a much bigger presence to me. Better soundstage as well.

  6. Yessum, and I think wise and well done. I am enjoying the recent posts at the top. Didn't have that before. Plus, the fixes Chad has made like partial quotes and such are really outstanding. While I'd still like to be able to list topics in descending order, the recent posts takes you directly to the latest, which is a help. I am almost used to having to click on the post time to get to the latest...though it is still a bit of an annoyance. Now, my only concern is that Uncle Sam will get wind of Chad's remarkable ability to deal with hundreds of impossible to satisfy hornheads and draft him to fix that health care thing... Dave

  9. Dr. Geddes is a brilliant audio scientist who has taken a total systems approach or ROOM design, speaker design, with measurements and psychoacoustic testing with the help of his briliant wife. He knows his stuff. BUT on the simpler approach of things, Two 10 or 12" subs in the middle of front and back walls will easily outperform a single 15" even when placed in a corner because of fewer peaks and dips, which can be huge with only a single sub. They don't have to match but it doesn't hurt if they do.,

  10. I haven't seen the video yet but have run 10Hz test tones on my IB. It'll turn ceiling fans in an adjacent room and visibly flex windows in the back of the house.

  11. Very nice. Ran it through my laptop into Marantz 4270 to IMF mains and Bang & Olufsen bookshelf speakers. Rattled the floor and table. The IMF were strong down to 10Hz. Specs say they are good down to 20Hz. Bang & Olufsen not so strong but hung in there to 10Hz also. I could not turn it up as everybody else is sleeping. So how low should a good do it yourself sub go? With speaker response like this should I still consider a sub for TV and Music. Downstairs with the KHorns I think a good recommendation for a sub may be in order. Taz

  12. While checking out those clips, I noticed that there seem to be a lot of videos claiming that listening to a tone at 528 Hertz will repair your DNA damage and do other good things. Has anyone else heard of this?

  13. Hmmmmm at $6 what the heck..... Pass on the info sounds like fun. How did you modify it? Yeah the adcom is old and basically it was a donation as well. I just have to figure out what I move to next. As i said earlier Im a fan of Mr. Pass but even on the used market his stuff is a bit out of my price range probably. Ive had my eye on a couple emotive mono blocks in my area. I've been happy with my umc-1 from them.

  14. Congratulations on your Cornwall IIs. After I purchased my Forte IIs, I contacted Bob Crites about two months later for his Titanium tweeter diaphragms, crossover cap upgrade kit and new internal wiring for my speakers. I also installed better Pomona 3770 Gold-plated Copper 5-way binding posts. To my ears, I feel like I have retained the original character of the Forte IIs while making refinements that make these speakers really high end. I may opt for the Titanium midrange diaphragms from Klipsch that many have raved about as well. As far as amps go, good amps will sound good with Klipsch Heritage speakers--tubes or solid state. Bad amps won't sound good, because the high sensitivity of Klipsch speakers will expose them, flaws and all. I have an Audio Research phono stage, an Audio Research line stage and a restored/modified Dynakit Stereo 35 6BQ5/EL84 amp that sound great through my Forte IIs, but lately I've been having fun with a $6 15 watt chip amp that I've upgraded with better components that beats a modified Adcom GFA-535 a friend donated to me. The little 15 watt amp still does not sound as good as my tube amp setup, but it isn't too far behind either. A friend of mine is bringing his 300B SET monoblocks over to have a shootout with the chip amp and my tube amps. this will be fun.

  16. i am pretty sure mine from 85 are 2's. but either way yeah i ordered the rebuild kit and rebuilt them myself. i did one at a time to see if there was a huge difference. there was not. but crossovers could be worse i guess depending on use of the previous owner? could be wrong though. as far as opening them up just be careful with the screws. don't round anything out. i also did the crites tweeters. i did them one at a time as well. again, not a night and day difference. not that i am used to them the best thing for me to do would proxy be to swap the old ones back in to see if they are worse now. but right now i am having some issues with my old pioneer buzzing out of one channel. i need to order the cleaning stuff i need and do a deep clean on it. id say they aren't much more capable than what you have now unless you really plan on doing some heavy mods. you could go the cornscala route and swap the mid horn for a larger one and do a better driver in the mid. as well as the crates tweeter, then upgrade to the crates woofer as i hear it has a slight more on the low end, and then lastly the all crossovers with those. but then you are talking an extra 2,000$ for probably only a marginally better speaker.

  17. A Rabbi, a Muhllah and a Priest Walk Into a Nunnery........located in the seedy red-light district of a rough mining town. They are greeted by the Mother Superior who asks them if they had any difficulty finding the nunnery. The priest responds, "No problems Sister, but we do just have one question." "Yes, Father what is your question?" asks the Mother Superior. "Well Sister, once we entered the neighborhood, young girls kept approaching and asking 'How about a quickie, only 50 bucks?' and this happened several times" said the priest. "None of us know what a "quickie" is, could you please tell us?" The Mother Superior answers "50 bucks Father, same as anywhere else in town."

  18. The general wisdom is that it should be at ear hight... so 32-36" or there a bouts. That said... the dispersion of the tweeter should be more than sufficient to blend in... ideal no, but more than workable and better than stock. These were motor boards I saved should even I find a PH800 horn... well the Eliptrac fits... Dave proved that last year... Now Im out to show that his new horn fits as well.

  19. Don't like crap-a-talk; but downloaded the crApp sometime ago, so it would leave me ALONE. It was a real PEST until then & at least now, it's free.

  20. Theoretically.... You could use a 15 DBW amp for each sub and reach reference levels, correct? THX specs are 115db on peaks I believe. I know you are referring to 2 channel but I would think the levels would be similar. I know I will not be listening above 115db.
