About a year ago now I was forced to sell all my gear and vinyl, I'm not complaining !! Life happens and you have to go with the flow, or get buried in depression worrying about what could have been. Today i mainly listen to headphones Sennhieser HD650 i got as refurbished for a good price, They sound very good but are nothing like stereo setup with speakers. I was a soundstage freak and continually upgrading in order to improve that aspect as well as others. With headphones things are more intimate, and you hear some nuances that were veiled even in the best systems I've owned or heard. Soundstage (as I'm used to it, with stereo) is non existent in headphones. I find i have to almost imagine the soundstage (some good mono recordings allowed me to do this on stereo in the past, Sonny Rollins saxaphone collosis for instance). I've read many a post on head-fi about how much better headphones will sound with an amp so today i placed an order for a Schiit Valhalla (I chose tube amp, only because tubes were my preference in stereo set ups) My source is ripped CD's at lossless I expect ill get a DAC at some point. Im wandering what you guys use as headphone amps etc... and why you chose the gear you did Joe1 point

If any Windtalkers can crack the code on mine, let me know. I would like to know the year. I have seen a couple charts, and still can't figure it out !1 point

Yes, it is hard to find them clean. If these were in AR, I would be in Postalman's driveway with my truck.1 point

A bit off topic... I got an app for my iPhone that is kinda fun. It does some equalization gymnastics and simulates the cross talk that you you usually only get from speakers. It is called "Canopener". It is pretty fun to play with and it is supposed to play high resolution files. Have not tried that yet.1 point

I had La Scalas as fronts, a Belle for front centre, Heresy IIs for side surround and a Heresy III for rear surround. Last summer, I found a great pair of La Scala IIs, so they're now my fronts (In 510 JubScala II form) and the original La Scalas have replaced the Heresy IIs for side surround. It was a very worthwhile upgrade on both counts. If you have the room, La Scalas make much better speakers than Heresy IIs (or IIIs, I would expect) in any location. The KPT-12-VBs look like fine speakers, but their K-28 woofers are the same as the woofers in Heresy IIIs. They'll do a good job, but they won't be in the same league as La Scalas or Belles.1 point

I use Heresy II as sides and KPT-100 as rears to save space. Works great for me.1 point

I'm running 5 Belles in my set up but have considered selling my rear Belles for these http://www.klipsch.com/kpt-1201/details#specs . They would free up some space and the timbre matching from the surrounds is probably not that big of a deal . You might consider some Heresys for the surrounds if you are running LaScalas or Belles for the front 3 . I did that before I got the rear Belles and it worked well ; Belles are better though .1 point

Sancho, thanks for chiming in. Either way if I look at it that way, I would be paying higher. Jason, I am hoping that I don't have to go so high. I have a threshold and will just have to see if I have to get to it.1 point

Good shot Amy, There are seven types of Chickadee in N America, your pic is of a "black Capped", mine is a "chestnut Backed"....We get to see five of the seven varieties, tho the "chestnut" is by far the commonest around here. I can get them to eat from my hand.1 point

Beautiful shot!!! I love chickadees too I don't think I've seen ones with brown in them...at least not that I've noticed. Pretty!1 point

Yes if you can show what they seller wanted and a nice difference in what you pay versus the awesome ChorusII, you should be sitting pretty with her. I like a good bargain myself and, cash talks. Sometime, it speaks alot.1 point

thanks Billybob. appreciate the reply. this is my first foray into high and speakers. an old college buddy's father had a pair and I remember being impressed by them. but that was 20 years ago. the little research I have done, I do agree that the Tweeter upgrade is a good thing. the refinishing that has been done as far as I'm concerned is easy enough as I do all my own carpentry and refinishing at home. the hard part will be talking my wife into letting me lay down so much cash. she just doesn't understand. I'm sure I'm not alone on that one. thanks again1 point

If you think it is a bit rich for you, nothing like an upclose and personal with the speakers. The pics are one thing but mintlike instead of mint may be closer to the reality. Seller may take less in a quick cash transaction. I would offer $650 just to size up the situation, myself if in the market. Good fortune11 point

Welcome to the forum! Looking pretty good, and bet you could get them for $800... Or wait and see if they drop some. A chance someone else could come along. If close go see and hear...1 point

Class D amps fascinate me as do the chip amps but I would rather a class D over tripath from the various feedback i've read over the years. Class D has its place and I can't really justify it in home unless i need a major space savings and chip amps are well...not worth it to me. Personally, I think that the G or H switching technologies is an excellent compromise for sound quality and efficiency. I have arc audio amps in my car with class g or h tech and i notice a huge difference with headlight dimming versus another regular a/b i had in there not to mention the sound quality is better, way better. I don't think that the class D tech is totally there yet. I know there are major brands using the tech and are making really good stuff but it isn't widespread enough yet. There is just something wrong to me about chopping the sound wave apart/ Its like when i upload music through ITunes, i never have it chop out the sub bass frequencies.1 point

Lets say you are bi-amping or even tri-amping these highly efficient systems. You can get buy on much less power. For tweeter and mid you could run a sweet 45 tubes. My dream combo is a Brook PP 2a3 tube amp on the bass bin and a pair of 50 SETs amp on the other horns. Throw in a PLLXO and you could be in miliamp territory. I recently heard my jubs bi-amped with 2a3 set amps and I was reminded just how good SET amps can sound. It was the best I've heard my Jubilees to date. There was no lacking in top or bottom end.. Kaiser even made me play Roy's cd. lol.. We were listening 100db peaks but mostly around 90db. The room 12ft x 15ft and 11.5 ft ceiling. I've tried chip amps and it was a poor experience. I wanted to like them but after a month I wanted better quality sound. I ultimately destroyed them trying to modify them lol... Cheap amps will usually sound cheap whether solid state or tubes. There ain't no free lunch. If you want to see someone building modern high end tube amps check out Thomas Mayer. http://vinylsavor.blogspot.com/ To each his own if we all liked the same thing this would be a very boring forum.1 point

I picked up an MHDT Labs Havana NOS tube DAC a few months ago and I love it. The sound is really nice, warm yet detailed, beautiful 2 channel music, I highly recommend this DAC.1 point

heresys are great and have a warm sound but they lack low end completely. If you can get a pair of quartets, they are basically heresys but taller and have a good low end or the chorus or fortes. I have quartets in my office and I love them.1 point

You can buy slant risers for them or make or buy stands to get them up where you need em. They are great sounding speakers for sure. I loved mine. But once the Cornwalls came it was a whole different world. So while we are on that kick just go ahead and save yourself the money and heartache and just buy some khorns.1 point

LOL. I'm more impressed with the IRON. When I had tubes, I mostly listened to them in the winter and SS in the summer. So heating spaces was seasonally balanced. LOL.1 point

I'm not a fan of the looks of the older speakers Haha but sound comes first. I've opened up and started looking at craigslist for Hersey's. There are plenty around here since I'm only 2 hours from Hope, AR where they were/are handmade. How do the Hersey's sound so good if they sit below ear level?1 point

lets be clear that the rf-28 is not a real speaker. i would go out on a limb and say that most that are looking for quintets or kf series (lets call them modern looking) are not gonna want a heritage speaker in their room. and also piecing together a used heritage system consisting of say 5 herey's is much more difficult than a newer setup that is available at a store like best buy. although i will agree with you 100 percent about the heresy sounding much better than the KF-28.1 point

I've had great luck with this tube DAC. It's set up so that it works with two different systems and sounds great with both while converting MOG off a PC. Never heard the Jolida.1 point

Euphonic sound IS accurate sound. Maybe some of you have forgotten what real music sounds like, along with the emotions good sound provokes. Engineers listen through mixing monitors or headphones, and of course you're always at the mercy of their hearing, what's left of it. I have no interest in hearing what those clowns hear, for crying out loud, listen to the quality of the crap their putting out. I don't know why distortion signatures are being discussed. As long as the amp isn't run into the clipping, the distortion signature is of relatively low consequence. I'm not sure if there is anything I haven't tried. I'm going back to tubes for 2-channel because it sounds better. That's really all I've ever been interested in -- better sound. This is supposed to be an experience that brings enjoyment and pleasure. All of you guys who want "accurate", which basically means sterile, thin, flat, and makes you wince and grit your teeth -- can have it!1 point

I quickly looked up 'Pioneer class D receiver' and found their SC-05 and 07. Then went to Amazon for a quick price check on the 05. Um.....the picture of the 'Pioneer' doesn't seem right. So, what were we talking about? Something vs something else......I forget. http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-SC-05-Elite-7-1-Channel-Receiver/dp/B001GBYVB6 Added to cart and wish list! 7 used from $500. They vary from Used - like new to Used "acceptable." I wonder what acceptable means? The only issue that I see is that [that particular] "Pioneer" looks like it is high maintenance, worse than tubes. Lol! Definitely high maintenance.1 point

Joe, Been getting in to headphone gear in the last couple of years because of an increase in travel. Hard to set up Khorns or Cornscalas in a hotel room or short term apartment. I started with some Shure 840's and the amp in my Lynx Hilo. Upgraded to some of the Senn 650s with a Zu cord. Then I built a Bottlehead SEX amp. Next was some JH7 in ears with a Audioquest Dragonfly for plane travel. Previously used Klipsch X11 in ears which are really nice and the only ones I could tolerate in my ears for more than an hour or so. I too miss a soundstage that does not come from the center of your head when I am on the road. I owed a friend for some serious assistance and for the Bottlehead SEX amp kit he gave me as a gift. I got him a Schiit Valhalla for his birthday a while back and I it sounded a bit better than my Lynx Hilo with my 650s. You won't be disappointed. I also spent some time with some of the other Schiit gear at the RMAF in Denver. Some great sounding gear. Even the new $100 amp is really good. Add the DAC and the dedicated DSD DAC and you have a first class system for under $350. My 650s and my SEX amp are my best set up, with the JH7s and the Audioquest Dragonfly being almost as good with 24/96. As soon as I move to 24/192 or DSD sources the 650/SEX set up shines. Enjoy your Schiit, Pete1 point
