I want to start by saying that what I am writing has to do with personal experience and not something I read or heard. The subject matter is tip jars at checkout counters. A few years ago, I was in a local eatery and I noticed a jar labeled Gratuities Appreciated. I didn't have much spare change, so I apologized to the girl who was helping me that I would catch up with her next time. Her response floored me. She said "we don't get any of that anyway". That got me thinking about who is getting this money. I asked pointedly, "who gets the tips?" Her response was "the owners". Since then, I have found that in 2 other places, one being a large chain, the tips don't get distributed to the people responsible for customer service. This is not only unethical, possibly illegal due to Wage and Hour laws regarding minimum wage exemption, but poor business practice. What incentive are owners and managers giving to employees when they do this? None. It's a disincentive. One of my son's worked for a place where there was a tip jar, and he actually got fired for asking where his tips were. Here is the minimum you should do. Ask the person if they get any of the tips. If not, ask them if they are allowed to receive tips at all. If they are, hand them money. The most you can do is threaten the owner with bad publicity unless they either remove the jar or start distributing the money to those who earned it. Keep your eyes open, and let's take care of those poor employees who are getting ripped off because they are too naive or afraid to stand up to unethical bosses. Thanks for reading, Craig

Visited forum member kapsnb01's house today to pick up a pair of speaker stands and to listen to his modified CF-3s. (Sounded fantastic by the way). While talking I realized that I have spent a grand total of $230 on the speakers I'm currently using: $50 for my Chorus. Craigslist purchase. Guy had them in his garage. Cabinets beat up, tear in one woofer. I repaired the woofer with rubber cement and black tissue paper. Added some bracing to the cabinets. Installed the titanium midrange and tweeter diaphragms that were previously in my old Forte IIs. Replaced the grill cloth and one badge. $100 for my KG4s. Craigslist purchase. Guy had them for sale along with a decent pair of Yamaha bookshelf speakers. I asked how much just the Klipsch were and he said $100. The Yamaha speakers are in my garage. $80 for my Peavey subs and amp. Craigslist purchase. This past Sunday I saw them for sale for $100 that included the top horns. Had been used in a movie theater previously. Guy said he'd take $80 for the subs and amp. They barely fit in my 4 door Wrangler. Brought them home, cleaned them up, spent $3 on a couple parts from Radio Shack to make them work. Very ironic that with the speakers I have I spent the most money on my KG4s. I guess when it comes down to it I probably have closer to $300 invested with gas, miscellaneous things like the grill cloth, etc. Anyone else?

I have two Klipsch Quartets, purchased in 1991, that I was going to sell, but, in another forum on here, I was told they could be great for a home entertainment center paired with a center speaker (Academy recommended for center speaker) and a good receiver. The room I have the TV (a 60" Samsung Smart TV) is 12 feet wide 8 foot ceilings, and I'll be sitting about 11 feet away )the room is 15 feet deep). The Academy was recommended as a companion center piece for the Quartets, but is there another Klipsch center speaker option? Academys are few and far between online, and some of the are in pretty bad shape. The point of selling the Quartets in the first place was to use the money to buy a home entertainment center, but it seems like I won't get enough from selling them to get a really good system., so adding a center speaker and a good receiver and use the system for TV *and* music. Any help or input anyone can give would be appreciated!

Academies come and go in cycles. If you can get more quartets and use one for a center that would be best. You will not do as well selling quartets for something different than you will augmenting what you have. The other advice is give up golf before you end up in hell. God hates golf. He told me himself.

I am currently using a Marantz 2265 as a preamp with a Haffler DH-200 Amp. Am I missing anything by not having a true preamp? I never listen to the radio so the tuner portion of the Marantz never gets used. What is the importance of a dedicated pre-amp?

Yes, I am proud to have a problem (and lucky to still have a wife). The best deals I have gotten with many miles traveled: JBL L65A (needed refoamed) for $22 (goodwill) Walnut Forte with Yamaha MX-1000 and CX-600 for $150 Oak KLF-30s for $100 Rough black CF-3s v1 for $60 Rough La Scalas for $75 RF-83s with Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH receiver for $800 Walnut Klipschorns for $800 Walnut Belles for $1100 (completed my vintage collection) I have gotten a lot of other good deals, but those are the highlights.

Budman, yes definitely verticals. Maybe that is a driver license number??? I guess the buyer of my cornwalls might have ordered cane and stapled it on the motorboard himself. It looks old and factory to me so the guy did a good job. I just wonder if a customer could order up a pair of "raw" cornwalls and have the factory to do the grill cloth. One other thing, mine have brown paint on the interior edges of the front of the cabinet. I guess the buyer did this too but I see the factory oiled cabs with the same paint. I'm so confused! Haha. Not really. They're gorgeous sounding. My girlfriend loves blues through them--Big Mama Thornton, Buddy Guy and Albert King. Sigh... Thanks guys.

After some thought... If they do, then we can get their opinion on 1) SS vs. tubes; 3) best speaker wire to use; and 3) vinyl vs. cd's, etc.....

My library is all file based and is comprised of 16/44.1, 24/96, and a handful of 24/192 files. Quality is great, regardless of the bit depth and sample rate. I use JRiver media center for mac with JPlay on my ipad for remote control of everything. I think the only downfall is that it's too easy to keep browsing albums while you're listening and there's no effort required to change tracks. It's very hard to sit through a whole album. I find myself having to just put the iPad down or keep it out of arm's reach.

Hi my name is toolz, the story behind the name is a different story for a different time, I have a problem, I am a addict. My first pair of Klipsch were purchased at a local community yard sale a few years back. I was not looking for speakers just an inexpensive receiver for the garage. I found a old Sansui receiver for ten dollars and the couple said why don't you take the speakers with the receiver. They were a pair of 1979 Heresys. I was hooked. My wife says I am a crazy man and rolls her eyes when I say lets take a ride. "Where are they this time" she says and off we go. I have accumulated 7 pairs of various Klipsch speakers in 3 years. I also have acquired numerous parts and pieces. I have a problem. Recently there were two great deals on the forum one for a pair of Jubs and a pair of Palladium P-39F. I started to hyperventilate over the thought of the possibility of owning either of these Klipsch speaker systems. Now both sets were at least a 14 hour ride one way for me. I sat a the keyboard palms sweating, heart racing, ready to type a reply and out of nowhere the wife with the female 6th sense put a stop to my next fix. All is lost... . Maybe next time. I know many of you out there have a similar problem, so lets all join in and have some fun.

We know they're making fraudulent claims, but that's not the point of the discussion. Fraudulent claims doesn't do away with the fact that wire is an interface that effects the behavior of the components it's connected to, or that some wire types or topology are more ideal than others. For example, we learn that in spite of the continued insistence that zip cord is all that anyone ever needs, it's not really all that ideal, and that some audiophile favorites, like Goertz ribbon cable, can actually cause some amplifiers to go into oscillation. Are we talking about Chorus 1 or Chorus 2? Those crossovers do have differences. The schematic posted is for the Chorus 2.

Fine points, we all love PWK and his genius. Most importantly, his sound and speakers. Modest improvements to the Heritage line ,would only add to his legacy IMHO... I think the Heritage line , should be treated like the flagship line of speakers. Not the forgotten ones...

Well, time to go look for a new car. My 2007 Lincoln Town Car is dirty, probably will need a battery this winter since it is almost 7 years old and it has 36,000 miles on it. Probably the best car I have ever owned. So, they don't make the Town Car any more or I would probably buy another one. Going shopping today, not sure what to buy.

Chargers are nice, but having grown up with '68-'69 Chargers as 2-doors, a 4-door Charter just never sat right with me. Come to think of it, why are there so few coupes available at all any more? What you want is the Challenger. About the same car as the Charger, but is a 2-door.

OK, I am back from car shopping. Got that job done. 2014 Dodge Charger RT Max is in the place previously occupied by the Lincoln Town Car.

I thought I might check out this little coaxial driver. It has a horn in the center hidden by the dust cap. The back of the driver is threaded to accept a 1 inch HF driver. Bob Crites

No, I would not remove it. I had a driver with a damaged cone, so cut out the dust cap to see what the horn looked like. By the way, the dust cap is fabric. I am guessing it is acoustically transparent.

They sound pretty good for small speakers. Bass is not much as you would expect. However, something that surprised me, is that the bass is there down to about 40hz. It rolls off below about 150hz, but is still present, just about 5 to 7 db down all the way down to 40hz. So, a little bass boost below 150hz does something amazing to the sound of these. If you are one of those who like to see FR curves, here is the on axis FR on this speaker without the above mentioned bass boost.

Very simple 1st order crossover for 3khz. I just put if on a piece of wood attached to the back.

OK, if anyone wants to experiment with this little coaxial driver, you can build a box with internal dimensions of 16 1/4 in. wide, 10 in. deep and 9 in. high. The port is 2 inches diameter and 2 1/4 inches deep. I just used two more pieces of 3/4 inch plywood to complete the port.
