  2. ***OLD Thread Topped*** 1980 La Scala (THANK YOU to Forum Member snailtrax!!!) Went over to his place, "Down in Louisiana, Louisiana - Land of Creole Sues, Patois, Mardi Gras and romantic blues", Sunday & picked these up, after a nice listen to these & other gear. Serial numbers check out to 1980. Previous owner had stained the original BR finish to a nice dark reddish brown, with clear lacquer and had installed Bob Crites Sonicaps on the Type AA Crossovers. Mid Horns are K-55V & Tweeter K-77M. Have NO plans to change or repair anything working properly, for now, or run them on Tube Amps I don't own, nor play records on a Turntable I lost in 1990 & am not looking for, please don't take offense; it took me somewhere around 30 years to get over the fact that they are butt ugly....but, this set has had some nice make-up, including a Factory Top Grille...wish it were full length (but my wife sez the cats would play hell with that) & CANE (yes, I understand CANE was not a factory option, but I won't get rid of the original). Haven't really cleaned them up or gently tightened screws, although they seem to be pretty clean, have both original SN labels intact. Have, however listened to the Shiite Moslem out of them & when I didn't have JURY Duty, as I did Monday, Tuesday & ALL DAY Wednesday, working them out, even to late & odd hours. They are being driven, by a Denon AVR-3312CI AVR, using Monster Cable from circa 1991, when I bought my original kg1 & Klipsch dealers were pushing this type wire (as was Klipsch, at least in the Owner's Manual, I still have mine) other gear in my sig-tag. I have listened to them with Dolby Pro Logic II Music (5 Heresy II), RW-12d & km-rsw, Direct, Pure Direct, MULTI CHANNEL STEREO, STEREO with and without SWs. Like them best in STEREO, 2.2 & take back all I ever said about 2 channel audio; at least until I get more La Scalas, Klipschorns &/or Belles. For movies, they are wonderful in all forms of Lossless, I hear details on movies I never heard, and the Heresy II Center, circa 2001, keeps up effortlessly (until I can replace it with a La Scala, or similar). Don't have many pics just yet, but will attempt to attach a few. Last 3 are from Bill BEFORE we loaded them in the trunk of my car. First 1 is while they were in my trunk. Have another but can't get it to post.

  3. Ran across this drywall product for sound deadening and thought I'd post it here. Seems like good ease of installation and could probably also be used for constructing false corners for Khorns. Here's the link: http://www.quietrock.com/

  4. For me, the sound quaility is most influenced by the recording quaility, not whether it is 16 or 24 bit, or 44 or 96 Khz. The lower resolution can sound better if the original recording is a "good one" vs. a bad one with high res. I think we are saying the same thing. I also agree with a music server it is hard not to "click around" from track to track. Impossible to listen to a whole album.

  5. Hello forum members. In the last couple of months I have been trying to improve my La Scala speakers by turning my attention first to the crossovers and tweeters. With respect to the latter, I tried both Sequerra T1 ribbon tweeters and now Bob Crites. In both cases, I felt that while I got much better 'hifi' sound (smoother, more detailed etc.), I lost the amazing dynamics of the speaker. I do not mean the speakers didn't play loud with the new tweeters, they certainly did, but that the impact of instruments, their ability to move the air in the room, was much affected. At first, I didn't want to believe that a tweeter, which can hardly be heard on its own, could have such dynamic impact on the speaker as a whole. But after playing with and without the K-77 tweeter a couple of times, and going back and forth between the K-77 and the others, it was obvious to me that indeed it has such an effect. I was wondering if other people here have experienced something similar and whether they found a substitute for the K-77 which didn't suffer from a loss of dynamics.

  8. the reason i did this was the stain. the folk lure behind this pair was that Meat Loaf owned these at one time

  9. Wow scrappy. i thought your wife didn't even like KHorns cosmetically, now you're talking K402s.the most glorious thing about a false wall is it only matters what it sounds like. I only have a size constraint behind that bad boy. I'd buy pink speakers if it would save me a few bucks

  11. It always irks me when people point the cost of new khorns/scalas/cwalls as justification for their (usually) overpriced 30 year old version. This particular guy doesn't seem to be too high, but he does point to new MSRP as price justification.

  14. You need to work on your craigslist skills. Don't haggle until you're face to face, and certainly don't throw price statistics in the seller's face via email. Show up ready to take and pay full price, haggle from there.

  15. Love this topic Mark, I just want someone to help me justify the cost of this 4 foot piece of copper http://www.musicdirect.com/p-62948-shunyata-anaconda-zitron-power-cable.aspx?source=igodigital& When for $596.00 less I could have this http://www.musicdirect.com/p-50381-luxman-sq-n10-tube-integrated-amp-d-100r-ipod-dock.aspx?source=igodigital&

  16. JC stated what I have. I am running the 510 / HF K402 / MF 402 all on home audio McIntosh amps (MC-250s).........only 50 WPC each, all rebuilt by DeWick, tubey s/s sound. Took me a few years to accumulate. The MWMs get a QSC PLX2-1104 at 550 WPC, and 684 subs get a QSC PLX2-1804 at 900 WPC. I use 2 Ashly processors which are identical except for I./O (3.6SP and 4.8SP) The 4.8SP controls the whole stack left and right, the 3.6SP only the subs. I am using a McIntosh C220 tubed preamp and all my sources are connected to a Benchmark DAC2 (DVD, Dish Net, PC server, CDP digital, CDP analog). I have a NOSValves tube buffer on the tape loop that I can engage to make all sources even more tubey when desired. The key to the whole thing working in a home environment is the gain structure. Processors like one volume and require a certain minimum signal level. Above that you have some head room to go louder. So the game is setting the lowest volume you would use to a level that makes the processors happy........but it can't be too far below max volume you would ever use. This took time to figure out. I use an RTA to balance the gains on all the amps. But the end result is that you can have a conversation 3 feet in front of the whole thing with it substantially loud and not think or feel that it is very loud at all. The separation is huge and there is no blaring. It gets loud very gracefully to a point that some might say........that's all it can do? I went for extreme sound quality and not extreme volume, but it can get loud enough. The system is quieter than any Heritage speaker I owned (almost no audible hiss at idle......or any volume without music playing).......It is very quiet and clean. I have been happy with it.

  19. I have no idea what gold sounds like, but I can tell you that silver loudspeaker wire and interconnects don't sound like their copper counterparts. Think about that stranded copper Monster wire Klipsch used to use, and how nasty that stuff is now. All cheap stranded wire does the same thing within a year or two. I once measured a strip of that old dilapidated stuff with my multimeter and it was over a quarter of an ohm. How can this conductor type in that particular geometry be considered "the perfect standard" when it's obviously a step away from the trash can before you even get it off the spool? When PWK had the steering wheel, it was all tin coated annealed copper wire. Beautiful stuff that looks the same now as the day it was installed. People often ask me what they should rewire with, and I recommend the Supra Classic from Madisound. It's a tin coated annealed copper wire, in a zip cord format, and I tell them to run it end to end. 14AWG Litz works good too, but takes some work. Neither will oxidize, and both are reasonably priced.

  23. I tried a pair of one of the tweets you mentioned, but didn't find it a very satisfactory experience. I still have a question about whether I wired them out of phase with the other drivers due to the AK-4 x-over design. I found all kinds of unexpected effects, such as an apparent lobed effect when walking from side to side around the K-horns, and lack of blending between the tweets and the midranges on each side. I could always hear the tweeters stand out separately from the blend of the rest of the K-horns. In contrast, the K-77's blended very well into the system and were not separately audible from the rest of the K-horn. I'm not sure about the dynamics, but the other tweets sharpened the rendition of ALL the notes, including even the deepest bass! The problem was, the character of the sound, including the transient response, was quicker, which meant the character of the musical sound did not blend between the other tweets on the one hand, and the mid-range and bass horn on the other. The sharper, greater, articulation of the deep bass was exaggerated and not worth it. The K-77's resolved all this. I thought I was hearing a very confusing mix of good and bad that was beyond my ability to fix with phasing and myriad other possible changes. So I returned the other tweeters and have stuck with the K-77's.

  31. Volti does make some great-looking products, but I'm sure he'd defer to PWK as the real expert in speaker design. I'm just suggesting you try your speakers with and without the space under them being open to the room, and choose whichever way sounds better to you.

  35. Hmmm......? I've been married twice and as it turns out each wife not only allowed my Khorns - they bought them for me as gifts. So yeah, I've enjoyed 2 sets of Khorns and kept the last pair. That's my other message. If you do get rid of the Khorns (as I did once) you'll really be disappointed in replacement speakers (unless you have $$$ to burn). Ever consider 'speaker counseling'?

We could have photographed them and demoed them in my living room and would have saved you some money. Haha Happy for you Billy.

  39. Do you have any other pics of it so I can see how it is supported from the front? Just trying to see what options there are for connecting the horn to the bass bin. Ellis you may have seen this. These bass bins were built from 1" MDF not a cut down LS. The horn support is not attached to the bass bin allowing me to reposition the top hat as needed. Altec 511B horns, 902 drivers, Beyma tweets. "old school".... A pivoting pistol grip support is attached to the hole in the Altec flange allowing a little height adjustment to the mid and tweets.
