  1. My morning routine has me enjoying a cup or two of non GMO, environmentally friendly, green, expensive, co-op purchased, coffee while reading the latest in the cable debate now on page 19 in one thread and a "hot topic" in two others. Pursuing Cal's thread that wandered a bit and ended up in a discussion of coffee I would like to pick the brain of the serious coffee drinkers here and get some suggestions, tips, and advice. Here are the particulars. I usually do not grind my own beans. I drink two cups in the morning....that's it. Expensive to me is more than $10 a pound. I am not particularly loyal to any brand or purveyor. I have a Keurig but routinely use a Mr. Coffee. I guess among serious coffee drinkers, to use an audio comparison, I am in the boom box stage. So what would be a step up?

  3. That's funny.....just got a error message that I have reached my quota of likes for the day! I always try to acknowledge replies that are helpful. So if you didn't get a "like" from me I am sorry and I owe you one. Back to coffee. Just went by Trader Joes' and picked up a bag of Kauai whole bean coffee. "Made up of yellow Catuai, a common variety of bean on Kauai, often referred to as "yellow cat"." "The most common flavor that is noticed in yellow cat is a rich, dark chocolate, and is lower in acidity" Later I will grind enough beans for an afternoon cup and report back...... Good link Dave.....back on the slippery slope once again. BTW....isn't it cute how I used "Cables" in the thread title to lure you guys in

  4. They do look real nice in your room, and you should set aside some bucks for a tube amp - it seems the "Heritage" line loves being driven by tubes for some reason.

  6. We use Community Dark Roast & Cafe du Monde Coffee & Chicory. While I like freshly roasted beans from Cuba, et C. for the most part to me, it's all coffee.

  7. Good Morning, On my first cup now and plan on drinking another. It is a commercial type, Folgers and your coffee sounds nice. The Keurig is alright but brewing one cup at a time would keep 2 drinkers here a little busier. On our 3rd Mr. Coffee maker here in as many years. We are looking ourselves to a more fufilling experience, and interested to see what the others have said and are about to say. Thanks

  8. I'm someone that fell completely in love with Altec A7's about 8 or 9 years ago. I bought a pair that had seen better days at a local pawn shop. So, I had the bass drivers re-coned and the high frequency diaphragms replaced by Great Plains Audio. I then recovered the beat up cabinets with a rosewood vinyl and made grills from wheat colored guitar grill fabrick to cover the horns which were mounted in the slots. I held onto them for a year or two, but had them in my garage. I had no room in the house I was living in at the time. I always had them playing when I was outside or in the garage. I actually planned on them to be in my mains in my home theater in my current house....Anyway, I put them up on Ebay for $3k just to see what kind of interest they would attrack and low and behold someone bought them. I hated getting rid of them, but I didn't think they would sell for that much. To ship them, I covered them in insulation sheathing and had to ship via freight to Tennessee. I really liked the midrange transparency and how effortlessly they were to drive and how they played reasonably low. I've ran across another pair or two since and didn't want to take on a project with such large speakers, but if the right ones were to show up...I wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger. BTW - I also owned the home version Valencia's which I had planned to use as rears. If I find some pictures of them I will post them for everyone to see.

  9. I agree with you here, why mate a distortion box sub with a nice set of horns. Is that not the reason we use horns in the first place, to remove much of the distortion ? Seamless transition from woofer to subwoofer is what most of us are after. That seems a little harsh (distortion box).

  15. Yum.....scotch.....wish I could still afford to buy it.....might skip the afternoon coffee if I had a good single malt. Heck I would settle for a Dalmore cigar malt with one cube of ice. Never had chicory.

  16. Some people like chickory flavor. Was used with and as a sub for coffee during war and hard times. Luzianne may still have it. I like a cup when offered. Cajun country coffee, and maybe other.

  17. Chicory must be an acquired taste (like Scotch). I can't stomach either one of them even though I've tried several times.

  19. For us it's what you said or Community New Orleans blend, but really when you addicted like me almost any would do. Both have chicory so it's really different, to me pure coffee taste flat/bland even the best.

  23. Now mind you, I nurse my second cup frequently until the noon hour+. I can drink iced coffee, if it is good. I savor the coffee so, just need to drink different blend/ non blends reading this. Do like coffee quite some lot! Can appreciate a nice tasteful coffee or espresso. I like an espresso while travelling straight up. It is very good sweetened some with cream, is my taste. As a matter of fact, I have been known to have some in the PM for that pick me up effect. Have a too go cup. Thanks for the recc's Drank 5 cups a day briefly but, it was the going thing. Had trouble sleeping. If drink in PM subject to count sheep. Did for a bit use Monster energy java, have used when needed. Like Kona and the Cameron looks delicious. Thought I was the only one drinking it but, remembered Starbucks.

  26. A few observations... I've a number of coffee makers I've collected over the years. My favorite is one of the early fifties Sunbeam vacuum pots. Lots of fun to observe and outstanding coffee. Cheapest HQ maker: French press. If you want it fresh, buy green and roast'em yourself. If you like cast iron and hate to season it, roast coffee beans in it a few times and you'll have a black sheen that is shiny and smooth as Teflon...and get a lot of good coffee drinking in while you're at it. Best grinders don't grind at all, but crush. Burr is second best and much easier to come by. Favorites: Jamaica Blue Mountain and Indonesia Sumatra Lintong Dolok Sanggul Blue Mountain is very expensive and often out right fake or diluted with other beans. I made a massive effort to purchase green beans in Jamaica, but even in that rather corrupt society was only able to get away with an 8 oz or so sample from the Coffee Board. Most Blue Mountain plantations have been owned by the Japanese for a couple of decades and most of it goes there. The Indonesian peaberry is a bit easier to come by and drinks great as regular coffee and makes my very favorite expresso when French roasted. Indonesia Sumatra Lintong Dolok Sanggul also forms the basis of my favorite recipe for Irish coffee, learned at the Cricket Club on the old parade grounds in Singapore. Strong peaberry, jigger of Black Bush, dollop of Devonshire cream on top. Ungodly good... Just a few thoughts... Dave

  30. I love kona. I have an uncle that lives in hawaii, so birthday and xmas gifts always consist of chocolate covered macadamia nuts and kona coffee. no complaints.

  31. My brother grinds and brews Kona every morning. It's the best black coffee I've ever had. I'm not quite sure what he pays for it but I'm sure it's not cheap as he gets it shipped directly from Hawaii. The best pre-ground black I've had lately is, of all things, Starbucks "Blond" roast. It's actually one bean that they don't char to a crisp. It's really very good. Strangely enough, they quit carrying it in store. You have to go to Wal Mart or Target to get it.

  32. Thanks for those links...may now be on a banana peel headed for that slippery slope. Yikes! I may need a pot for tonight. The Olympics start and Jay Leno's last show. The lady friend (non coffee drinker) wants to see both on my TV and she is a night owl.....I am not. But what's a guy to do....right?

  33. This man knows what he's talking about. I have a Cuisinart burr grinder and love it. I'd never buy one, but I managed to get a $50 gift card to World Market a few years back and this thing just so happened to be $49.99.

  34. Black for me as well. Beware, coffee making is like audio. You can go down the upgrade path and really spend some bucks if you're not careful. It happens quickly once you get into espresso.

  35. Coconut cream sounds interesting. I usually drink it black, but will add cream on occasion if it is bad enough.

  36. I use a coffee maker that grings the beans before brewing and eight o clock whole bean coffee, either the original or coloumbian. Its good coffee and not too expensive. Sometimes i mix the original and coloumbian for something a little different but always stick with the brand. As for cables i always used the better quality Radio Shack stuff but the company has strayed away from selling the products i have always used so now i get my stuff from Parts Express. Wired home speaker wire & i have a surplus of the RCA brand deluxe gold plated RCA cables they now have on closeout. The RCA's are actually constructed very well and i never had a problem with them or their speaker wire.

  37. Careful! I consider myself in the "my first stereo" stage and don't plan on getting worse---well, maybe might get a bur grinder. I grind my own before each batch with a basic whirly-gig grinder shaking at times for distribution for 15 seconds. I typically spend up to $12 for 3/4lbs, and use a Bunn coffee maker---it will brew a full pot in 3 minutes and definitely outperforms the slow drip kind. It also makes a quick pot of water for tea. Your upgrade would include the type of maker and grinding---simple.

  38. I'm not a coffee expert by any means but I do enjoy a good cup of Joe. I generally have a 16oz mug every morning, 8oz. on the way to the gym at 6am, and the other 8oz. when I hit my desk around 8am. I probably drink more most weekend mornings. I buy from my local home grown grocery called Bloomingfoods. Most of their coffees come from 3-4 local coffee bean makers and run $8.99-14.99 pound. My favorite right now is called Organic Love Buzz which is $10.99lb. I also buy whole beans and grind them right before I brew in the mornings. I recommend this if you are wanting to step your game up. To me grinding my own beans has been the single greatest increase in my coffee drinking experience I've ever experienced. I owned a Keurig for awhile, but it didn't brew as strong as I liked, although I admit I still enjoy the different flavors now and then when I visit my parents. All in all, I'll drink a gas station Maxwell House if that's all there is, and be completely content.

  39. The cheapest thing to do would be to keep your existing coffee maker buy a cheap burr grinder and find a local roaster to get fresh beans. Big step up in quality without a huge investment.

  41. yes that amp will be fine. Make sure you have the dual 4 ohms subs or this amp will not work for two. Although I'd make sure that seller is authorized. I just bought the same amp off of eBay for 239. Think the seller was unique squared.

  42. Added another pic, of mocking up the panels. I will order the drivers tomorrow, I realized I must have cut one of my side panels. So hopefully I have a way to get a sheet of plywood home sometime this weekend. But all in all its all coming together nicely, I just need to look at some of the access panels and were to place the fiber fill cotton stuff.

  43. Ironic let me apologize for not wrapping the amp in a bag to prevent that from happening. I had a very busy week and my first priority was to get your amp to you as soon as possible. I tried to double box the NAD but the depth of the amp would not work with any of the materials I had. And I wanted to honor the email I sent you concerning when it would be shipped. I will also be happy to send you a can of compressed air and a Phillips head screwdriver to help you with my mistake. Also this could have been handled in the messenger instead slinging mud in the garage sale forum. I appreciate your diplomacy and you pointing out that mistake for everyone to see. I hope the amp serves you for many years. Now that I have apologized and we are doing this in the garage sale forum. If you feel that you did not get a good deal or you are not happy with the amp. I will be happy to refund your money through Paypal and wait there's more I will pay the expenses to ship it back here. When I get it, I will drive to my nearest Salvation Army store and use as a deduction for my 2014 taxes. Please let me know if you require the compressed air or the screwdriver so I can get the in the mail on Monday.

  44. I should mention that the first playing often results in strands of the facial, that didn't come off as part of a single sheet, trailing from the stylus. Carefully remove that and enjoy a clean record.

  46. Drywall square is a must have. Make sure its square before you buy it, not all are perfectly square. Bring a sharp pencil with you and mark both sides of a factory cut 4x8' sheet lightly and make sure the lines run parallel. Don't do this in front of employees though.

  47. I am finding the latest generation of electronic stud finders truly cool. Extremely fast and accurate at finding the center. Plus, pinpointing AC power is a big help. Big improvement over the little "dousing rod" magnet thingies of most of my life that only found nails...which might or might not be in the center of the stud. Dave

  48. Yes, I do think there could be audible differences. But, we have a standard of perfection. That would be plain old ordinary 16 AWG zip cord. First listen with the zip cord. Then listen with any other cable of any price or type. If they sound different from the reference zip cord, they are bad. Easy test. Bob Crites
