  1. It will drive them no problem.... is it the best solution for ht, certainly not. Klipsch speakers are HIGHLY efficent so they only need a watt or two to achieve 100db or more. They thing is, ht really requires some head room because of the way a movie delivers sound.... in peaks and spikes.

  2. My bottleneck is lack of cash.

  3. The key to the least expensive is to take the product to them and have the buyer pick up from them. My DTS10 subs (575 lbs for both) were delivered from Flagstone Arizona to Concord California for $250... To have them deliver to my house with a liftgate was another $280. You can see how much you can save.

  4. Summer before last, I gave Klipsch the first of their speakers that I ever heard (1965-shorthorns from the El Dorado, AR choir dept.) to referbish and sell for their fundraiser. I've been a Klipsch fan for a long time. Last summer, my heart broke at the news that the Pilgrimage was cancelled. With the advent of the new forum, I thought it would be a good time to invite Klipsch folks to a Klipsch party at the Klipsch hometown. This is entirely devoid of any knowledge, blessing, or approval from anyone at Klipsch. If it turns out to be an ARKLATEX gathering, we'll have a blast, but I'd like to see some of you Yankees, and others, too. I'll post soon with some details. Since it's Hog country, we'll have to Bar-B-Que one. SSH "The Farm house is not available for rent in 2014", I was told when I called today to rent it for next March. .

  5. For me, I see my RS-42 as my bottleneck. This is a nice little gem but I'd like something bigger to "match" the others. Then replace my RS-3II to match. I know the RS-3II is older but it does its job pretty well up on that wall. And then my Pioneer Elite BDP-94HD blu-ray player. It's an awesome player but it's just darn way too slow when loading blu-ray movies.

  6. PWK's friend, and the only other designer PWK told me personally that he completely respected, Jack Frazier's response to the Klipschorn...just a silly db more efficient! Specs in the attached pdf. I will start with the price: 3000.00 and buyer arranged pickup. The price is based on: 1. My love for them, but recognition that having two pair of the world's finest speaker designs (the others being my Klipschorns) is, perhaps, a bit excessive. 2. The tax deduction and pleasure I'd get by donating them to my parish for use as speakers to "hybridize" our pipe organ. 3. Fact you can't purchase a new speaker remotely this good at the price. 4. Exceptional condition. A light steel wooling and a coat of tung oil or whatever and they'd be "minty" fresh. Also, badges, grills in excellent condition and not so much as a dent in the dust cones, etc. Further, these may well be the last pair built as no one has reported a higher SN and former Frazier employees say less than a 100 pair were ever built. I might dicker a bit for a sincere and deserving Forum member...but not a lot. Frazier (2).pdf

  7. When attempting to grow up while living in a smallish Florida town, my friend would sometime discover some treasures for us to listen to. Still unknown to some like Rory, I feel a disservice to my now deceased friend and Roy, for not posting before now. He liked to bend an elbow also. Here is a taste from the forerunner of the Austin City Limits:

  8. Best sound I ever heard was using a Sonic Impact T-amp that had a Denon CD player connected as a source and my old Forte IIs. Ran the T-amp off AA batteries. The Denon had it's own volume control. Holy cow was that smooth.

  9. That doesnt make any sense to me Sorry, like I said, I'm pretty new to all this. What I meant is: is there a a sort of "red line" in amp output that, if exceeded, causes bad things to happen? ppoint, Yes there is a redline. If the amplifier is pushed beyond its capabilities it will clip the positive and negative peaks of the electrical signal going to the speakers. Without getting too technical, let's just say this is distortion. If the speakers are still in their mechanical limitations meaning they can handle more power than the amp can deliver they will try to reproduce these clipped or squared off waveforms which they cannot do. Think about it, the speaker (a cone speaker to keep it simple) is moving back and forth to the undulating music signal it is receiving, compressing and rarefying the air as it makes the sound wave that we hear. At its maximum forward or backward excursion it is sent this clipped signal, what is it going to do? It is going to try to stop and stay at this amount of excursion as long as the clipped wave lasts. When the cone is not moving no sound is being made. Also the clipped waveform is DC voltage which generally speakers do not like.

  10. If we are talking the weakest link, mine would have to be the projector. It is several years old now and is only a 720. When new it was not bleeding edge but pretty advanced, now it is run of the mill for lower end setups. 120 inch DaLight screen is nice though Sound system Yamaha 663 (I think) feeding a Fort'e 3 and a Yamaha M80 for fronts and sides while the AVR takes up the center and rear duties. B.A. sub (could be better) speakers are Acadmy center, Quartet mains, Heresy 2s as sides and KG 2.5s as rear. All in all we are happy and have been for several years. One day when the bulb goes out on the projector, I will use that as a reason to "upgrade" LOL! Only about 500 hours left on the 2000 hour bulb

  11. I would have to pick the room for a bottleneck. I may look into some sound proofing later this year. Cash for this hobby is always a bottleneck, lol.

  12. A great place IMO to start looking is at the decibel. That's the Rosetta stone. Aside from its formal definition, the decibel allows the math to jump from one unit value to another. If there was one term I'd spend the most time on trying to grasp, first off would be that.

  13. My "bottleneck" has always been space. My rooms have always been too small to pull off a proper 360 arc that satisfies all acoustic restrictions....in particular, the surround channels. It needn't be the size of an actual theater, but the ideal sure ain't no standard-sized living room either.

  14. Hi PPoint, That avr/amp is not that strong. The speakers don't take many watts to run but, for HT, there are dynamic peaks. That could be a problem at high volume. It may be worth considering and higher power avr down the road. 21 watts for 5 ch. driven in HT is a little light IMHO. A Heresey can reach reference with 53 watts and KLF 20 around 57. A Cornwall will take 27 to reach 105 db at around 12-13 ft. This data is from the AVS forum on : Audio/speakers/high sensitivity speakers and reference level, http://www.avsforum.com/t/1387083/list-of-reference-level-high-sensitivity-spl-speakers.

  15. Looks like a prety solid unit. I am listening on a 45 watt per channel system. It should sound good.

  16. You are on the right path, with a pretty good understanding. Just do not overdrive with the volume into distortion,etc...you are good to go.

  17. About "checking it out"... what would I be looking / listening for? Distortion, crackling noise, anything unusual when delivering extreme volume. For HT they should be fine...or other. Hook them up correctly and you should be good to go. Let us know please.

  18. what is the purpose of those "wedges"? the kg 5.5 has lots of the same foam stuffed inside, just not a wedge. what does the wedge improve over the stock foam?

  19. What if both of your systems are "pretty"? Larbo, I know what Thaddeus is saying and I agree, upgrading your surround backs probably won't be that big of a difference. If you wanted to upgrade your surrounds, I would upgrade the side surrounds since they receive a good amount of information. You could leave the RS-42 for surround back and upgrade the RS-35 to either the RS-52 or RS-62.

  20. Nice room , for me mine is my side surrounds. Youthman ,when I started my theater I thought of doing a false wall. And then I thought these speakers are so beautiful and paid so much for them why hide them. They look so cool and mean.

  21. bottle neck? weak link? maybe the fact that I only run 3.1 right now when watching movies, but I am still happy. I to am unhappy with "handshake" issues... load times don't really bother me anywhere near as much as goddamn previews and pre movie advertising. I love those few disks I have that go directly to the menu page.

  22. But of course....love that guy! Purchased at a store in Singapore. I had a good friend who took me to her temple and gave me a good education in all I did not know about Hinduism. I fell in love with Ganesh, the aspect of God that shows us the quality of being happy regardless of one's state. The story is that Ganesh was the most beautiful being, and vain. God changed her appearance to that of an elephant...but she made the best of her situation and dances eternally. Great concept. Yep, seriously mixed emotions. But I REALLY need to upgrade my recording rig both to continue my 4 channel research and in advance of the pipe organ installation at my parish. I need to do that more than I need to horde more fine speakers than I can fully appreciate. Dave

  24. Yes the Tandberg was the finest i have heard as well. I have a freind well into his 80's who collects reel to reel machines and i have made some very long drives to pick up some in particular for him and his collection. Still at his age he takes some of the nicest equipment i have seen and mods and rebuilds in great detail. I have no idea about these machines other than how to use one although sound quality from the Tandberg and i dont remember the model was very good.

  25. I currently have two rtr's a sony that I can't recall the model number ( it does take 15" reels) and a Tandberg 64. The Tandberg was the first high quality piece of equipment that I ever bought. For those of you in the Bay Area, I bought it used at Pacific Stereo in Berkeley probably in 1972. It still might be the best sounding piece of gear that I have ever owned. I have owned many r to r s . This old Tandberg sounds by far the best.

  28. Forgot to mention, I saw Danny Gatton in a small club in Dearborn, Mich. His band was the tightest I've ever seen, and yes, he played slide with a half full beer bottle. He and Roy Buchanan were pals in the DC area. Gatton was called "the Humbler" by fellow musicians. He could play just like Roy Buchanan when he felt like it and went way beyond what Roy ever did. He also mentored guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa, who I saw at the Fox in Detroit last May. Gatton was a head cutter and never lost a challenge. He also commtted suicide about 6 years after Roy Buchanan did. Roy at 48 and Danny at 49. It's a shame these guys never got the commercial success they deserved. They were definitely "musician's musicians." I'm so glad I saw these guys live besides owning their recordings. Kinda like the last time I saw Jeff Beck in Detroit at the Opera House. 90% of the audience was guitar players, some with their kids. I remember Stevie Ray Vaughn being quoted when asked: "Do your consider yourself the world's greatest guitarist?" To which he replied: "No, the best guitar player in the world is some guy in a smoky bar somewhere you never heard of."

  31. Did not know about the Beck inspiration. Blow By Blow and Beck a favorite and have the album as well as other Beck jazz and rock. Never saw Roy except on TV. He was playing rock my plimsoul with a bass and drummer. Sounds like what was going around that I heard, from some. The greatest. Super that you saw. Thanks

  32. Saw Roy Buchanan 3 times. Twice indoors, and once outdoors. Hi amp was backwards second time, which I though was weird. There was a full page ad in the Detroit News, summer 1974, stating: "Possibly the world's greatest guitarist" at Ford Auditorium, where the Detroit Symphony used to play. So I went with a co-worker...............Man when this guy played, everyone's jaw dropped and you could have heard a pin drop in between solos. Holy crap. This is only 4 years after Hendrix died and Roy was THE inspiration for Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow, considered Jeff's best instrumental recording produced by George Martin. I do remember Roy not being very exciting on stage. He just stood there and played. No leaping about crap for that boy. It was all about the notes.

  37. Dude was member of our three piece garage band and was always recording us with a rtr. Need to see him again and find out if we went big or burned the tape. I sang falsetto on Janis J... Have a RTR here, A sony. Still plays but the head is worn out, like mine.

  38. I have not messed with a XLR since I was a kid fixing things for a few local Bands, ok a lot of bands. As I recall they were 'Locking' in those days, do they still do that ? band members still tore them up, but they did not pull/fall out. By the way, one of the bands after years really took off, you may recall the name Great white? then Eddies dad financed the band with new equipment, Eddie and his brother were kind of snobs, cool but snobs, about the name and so it was, we get new equipment we use my name. Van Halen was born. Continued my repair work and never saw these guys again, sorry for the rant, but XLR's were the standard back in the day.......

  39. For short cable runs, unbalanced will have equal noise immunity. For any cable run, unbalanced will typically be lower distortion. The unbalanced circuit is also simpler and requires fewer parts, which means you can double your component quality versus balanced. If you're having issues that are fixed with a true balanced interconnect, then I would suggest something more important needs fixing. There's a million caveats to my very brief writing here, but my point is that sometimes unbalanced can sound better....I had never even considered the thought until I started measuring equipment at work...

  40. I was planning on keeping these for a project, just dont have the time. Fostex-like Radial horns. Setup for thread on drivers. $500 shipped to Conus. These are great sounding horns, reccomended crossover frequency 600hz. Great to set atop Cornwall. Dave

  43. I have been running a pair of Faitals on some K402s for a couple of weeks now and have been using ALK ESNs at 500 Hz and a DBX 1231 EQ. I have been extremely impressed by these drivers on K402 horns. At the opposite end of the room is my full MCM-3 Grand system that employs TAD 4002s on its K402 horns. The Faitals are not quite as clear sounding as the TADs........but they are close, and completely hold their own on high end extension. I have been running them atop a set of DBBs and this 2-way system definitely can hang with the MCM in some regards. I like Faitals a lot. I will be turning this into an actively crossed and EQ'd system shortly to try that method. Another point I shouild mention is that I am not using the same electronics on both systems when making these comparisons. I have by far the better electronics on the MCM setup. Therefore, the Faitals may be even better than I am suggesting here. Bascially, I have been using the TADs and the MCM setup to help me learn and EQ the Faitals on this other pair of K402s that I have. Like I said, I have been very impressed by the Faitals to this point.
