I have been toying with the idea of up-grading the cross-overs on my rf-5's for quite some time now, and the more I think about it, the more I think it is the way to go. Deans explanations of upgrading x-overs seems to make convincing sense to me, would just mean being without speakers for a time. Not even sure if Dean would do the rf-5, I'm not confident of my ability to to do them myself.2 points

Hi billybob, yes I have gone that route before, had La Scalas, Heresy, Fortes, Kg4, I need the footprint that the Reference line offers, and regardless of what has already come and gone I do still enjoy what the RF-5's offer, regardless of the attachment I have for them.2 points

Some may have been here, but loads of cool and strange horn setups http://www.audiovoice-acoustics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1681 point

Simple question, what, if anything, would I have to gain by replacing my (cherry) RF-5's with one of the current reference offerings, or would my money be better spent up-grading my cross-overs? I have owned the 5's since new in 2001 just feeling that itch for something new, though I doubt I will get rid of them as they were bought for me as a present from my wife (she's also a keeper).1 point

Understood. I just unboxed the crossovers and had a good look at them. WTF was all I could think.................but in a cool way.1 point

I would find a pair of RB-75's. With the K-50.1 1.75" titanium dome compression tweeter, they are a real over-achiever. I use one pair in a room 15 x 22 with 11 ceiling in a 2.1 configuration with outstanding results.1 point

I'm not saying new stuff doesn't necessarily sound better. The rf-5s aren't the best speakers in the world. But are any of the alternatives good enough to justify the expense?1 point

How about a pair of RF7 ll which have the same horn as the RF5 so there would be an immediate connection thee. The CF3 or CF4 would provide you with a two way as well but this time with a larger horn. Best regards Moray James.1 point

I never heard the RF-63's, but I was/am impressed with my RF-83's. I ended up having to get an external amp to really get the best sound out of them. Horn loaded bass such as the khorn or la scala would be what I'd want to try, but you do need subs for movie watching. I am flat out impressed with the dynamics and imaging of the LS II's over my RF-83's, and that's saying a lot as the RF-83 is an excellent speaker. Horn loaded bass definitely sounds more accurate to me, but can't go as low as the 83's.1 point

Glad to know you have history with those various speakers. The more I hear about the RF5, the more I wonder what have been missing with the RF3's. We covered this before fairly recently, where the 5's were said to be more refined, maybe even better built(?). Am now thinking you have considered the RF-7's, and whether or not they would be a satisfying upgrade. X-Over upgrade does sound worthy of consideration. Noticed here that *DeanG has at the very least collaborated on the 7's X-O's. And then there are the 83's of course. Since you are going to keep the 5's, seems you have logically come to the X-O's for them. Cannot say that they are suffering from time, but seems to me that some are going to higher quality parts for X-O's for certain refinement. In My Limited Opinion. Thanks1 point

Scott, if you don't mind me asking, why so small of speakers for such a big room and what are you using the system for (movies or infrequent music)? If it's not your main system for movie watching, I'd just go with RB-81's or 61's. If it is going to be your main system, personally I'd be looking at La Scala's at minimum in a space like that. The newer version La Scala II's are more attractive than the old one's too. I've owned some top end reference speakers (RF-83, RF-82) and none of them have ever had excellent imaging (as in some of the best I've heard). They did sound good though, much better than anything Best Buy sells. For a main system, nothing's wrong with small speakers if it's a must, provided you realize they'll never perform as well as larger ones. I say this only because a lot of people buy small speakers expecting a lot. Things like room modes will also greatly effect low frequency response, so I'd also consider a second sub. I think this would help a lot in such a large room.1 point

Wait & see if something New in the Reference line comes out this year... OR RF-83 Cherry1 point

No. It was like dr. pepper and dr. pepper made with cane sugar. Slight refinement in flavor but not enough for me to ditch what I've always been drinking just to have that "cane sugar" label. Incremental refinement, but not nearly enough to justify the hassle of selling old and extra expense of buying new. For my father in law, however, it was like a whole new world had opened up and was hearing his favorite albums for the first time. Since I pushed him towards klipsch, that was gratifying for me.1 point
-
I have rf-5s and convinced my father in law to upgrade from his aging AR-14s to klipsch rf-82's. Wonderful sounding speakers, but nothing that made me jealous or suddenly unhappy with my rf-5's. Now my Cornwalls are a different story. I do all of my music listening exclusively on those and only use my RF's for HT duty.1 point

IMHO it is not the compression to MP3, M4A or whatever, it is the fact that the song is mixed for factory car stereo and Apple earbuds. Its not the file format, its the mix that needs corrected. There is no dynamic range or space between instruments and vocalists in today's mixes.1 point

I want to give my crossovers a fair shake BUT I can't imagine anything being worse than the crossovers that I sent Dean with original leaking caps. A fair comparison would be a properly working set of B2's to the battery bias equivalent. I will however keep the playing field even (for now) and install them while still using the same cables, amps and sources that I used prior to sending them out. In the not too distant future, I'll run them with a one off custom tube pre with SS amp, and after that, a SET amp. Those will both be topics of future threads. I'll also filter my thoughts through the fact that the room all this is in is not ideal by any means.1 point

I gotta say they look effing way better on there now at $3200. may switch to 3k and entertain offers ya know but people truly interested will make contact the way you have them listed now. you really had me wound up...still kinda do lol that 300 was hurting the economical aspect of such a great pieces of audio equipment. So once again thank you for getting them out of my pricerange...time to get some sleep edit:likely a good 60 day investment, meaning they will sell in time for what their worth1 point

You should. Those horns are the next best to k402's with the EV 9040 following only 1% behind A pair of these on top of Khorn, LaScala, Belle's, MWMs, Quarter Pie, of even Cornwall with Mini DSP or other active filter for shelving and PEQ will reveal detail you never knew you had. OK, I was working earlier and had no time to really look at this. I have K Horns and La Scalas that I can use these on. I want to go passive, not active. Will the aluminum diaphragms go down to 500 hz well (on the La Scalas)? Do these need to go 3 way? How hard will a crossover design be? The mids are 8 ohms and most heritage use 16 ohm. I think ALK's crossovers can use 8 or 16 ohm mids. What about physical size? 32" deep on a 2' deep speaker. Will this fit OK? I think your on the right track, with the right base it would work. I will be looking at Al's networks was well for my project. Last I spoke with him and don't quote me on this, he said his networks in a way were like universal networks and would work with either 8 ohm or 16 ohm. I don't think you need to go 3 way, recommended crossover is 500 hz so you should be good there, I think the horns them selves would go down to 350 with the right driver. I would go for it if I was you.1 point

Well im in no great hurry for the moment, I went Arab on the four Ev horns so we shall see how those do, I will sit on the JBLs until I hear from you for sure one way or another. how about the weekend to chew on the thought? (Going Arab on Ebay is when you post something you really don't care about "cause nobody else does" at an insane price, it's the "Free Shipping" that sucks them in. I sold a Sansui 8080 years back for $3000, it went to Dubai ......1 point

I've seen worse. No one's slinging arrows of righteous indignation yet. A couple darts......maybe. Yeah, I'm totally ok with the direction of this thread. As long as it doesn't get ugly and we start slinging "Yo Mamma" jokes. Honestly, there are bound to be skeptics. I honestly think I'm a good test subject to have the chance to hear the first DeanG RF-7ii because I have absolutely no previous experience with DeanG Crossovers, in no way am I being paid to endorse Dean and his work and I've never considered myself as an audiophile. I'm an average listener who loves music and loves the sound of Klipsch. I'm thinking if my ears hear a significant improvement in the sound, that's really saying something. I just hope I can express with words what my ears are hearing. Several times I have A/B two speakers and I hear subtle differences but cannot articulate what exactly I'm hearing (wider soundstage, dynamics, better midrange etc). The great benefit of this thread is I will share my honest thoughts on how it sounds. If I get them and they sound worse, I will tell you. If my ears really do not hear a difference, I won't be afraid to state that. If it's a significant improvement and simply sounds amazing, I will gladly provide a glowing review. Regardless, I'm anxious to hear what they sound like with the new crossovers. Anyone else getting excited?1 point

Hey, Congrats! Are those the ones from Main? They look great and they will sound even better. They are a different sound than the Cornwall's but I am VERRRRRRRY happy with my "new' pair It took two months ? You have some great willpower! I first saw khorns on1977 and i now own a pair of '78s As to the money, heck, you only NEED to spend it once, want to, well that is another story. If the wife likes good sound, she should love those and heck, you are only buying furniture, tables for your corners that also happen to double as speakers!1 point

yea but with me you get to drive 1400 miles (uh thats 1 way, so a total of 2800) Just think a whole 400.00 bucks waiting at the end of that trip, It would almost pay for the gas seriously Tiger, specs look like these would make a great 2 or 3 way setup, specs on the driver say 500 hz up to 20K, I would think this would be a better 3 way driver. I'm not sure what bass drivers would go to 500 hz cleanly Sure would be fun to find out though1 point

Cal, Glad things are improving, even if they are improving slowly. Taking your mind off of the current situation (as if that was possible), I just bought a pair of Klipschorns. I am excited, but I have violated the promise I made when I decided to get into this escape from reality. That promise was only to buy things I could fund from the "toy" account. I was able to avoid temptation earlier with respect to a pair of Cornwalls that I really wanted. While I was patting myself on the back for my restraint, I saw the Klipschorns. Ah what the hell, food and heat are overrated anyway. Now I have to drive 550 miles each way to pick them up tomorrow, explain this to my wife, and explain to my son why he now must transfer to a state college. How did my priorities get so messed up in just two months?1 point

Sorry for the time between updates. It is looking very good two days out from the surgery. While she would never be mistaken for "normal, whatever that is" but she is alert, understands what is going on around her and what is said to her a and can speak in understandable full sentences, that has not been true for more than 6 months. There still is a drain tube in the head and likely will be for a few more days so until then, she will be in ICU then will be moved to a regular room until cleared to go home. Again, thank you everyone for the prayers and positive thoughts, it means a lot. We have a big improvement from pre surgery and likely will have more. The big event is over and we have settled down a bit I doubt there will be any pitfalls now and will update big changes but this life event is nearly over. Thanks again for all the support, this is a great community1 point

I see all of this to be a very, very narrow market. Ask yourself how many people that you know are as passionate about Audio as you are. Then take away the people and friends you have met here or some sort of other audio gathering. I have three friends that I have known since High School (over 2.5 decades ago) that have decent Klipsch speakers and modest Electronics like myself. And yes, their ownership was influenced by my old setups growing up, so this even negates the probability of them looking for better audio having not being influenced by me. Would they consider to swap out a X-over and try a new one on their own...no. Would they consider taking time to update or re-wiring and old speaker searching for that last little bit thats probably not there....no. Do they ever complain about the quality of a 256K download..no. I guess Im the only freak in our small circle. Going further than that, a big portion of the people here balk at a $30 DVDA, Bluray audio or a $20 SACD. Now, everyone knows we can't afford to always buy lossless and the offering is not that great anyway. In time, I hope a lossless download is the norm, and I sure hope it gets here sooner than later. I applaud this push by Young as it will takes steps like this to get us there.1 point

something is only worth what someone else is willing to pay... and not one penny more. if you try and sell a ferrari 312PB and no one wants it, it is not worth a damn thing. frankly, I dont see any draw to frodo on my la scala, nostalgia or not. I'd much prefer a new tasteful characterization of PWK on la scala on my new t shirt.1 point
