  1. Check out this organ LaScala with attenuators on the tweeter and midrange: I have never seen that before. Was this a common practice, and what are the disadvantages of it?

  2. Inever got to hear the MCM Motengator, but it a big part of why some want MWM's at home, the big sound. We got to hear the KP-600 at the Pilgrimage in 2010, they were used on stage for the bands playing with a few subs(8), they sounded amazing. This stage was pointing out into a large park and had no problem filling it with music. Pic 2 is setting up the night before, there not small.

  3. I saw a friends false corners and they work great basically he cut a homeplate for the top and bottom, then side walls, which allowed him to just slide the K-Horn in that with no mods or permanent attachments to the speaker, then as a bracing scheme he made braces that attached to the false walls and attached to the speaker using the original grill lugs You use a little extra wood but you keep the speakers original, and you could also build using screws incase you ever moved the false corners could be taken apart to flat packs

  4. Backing up your new to you, semi rare, monstrosity of a truck for the first time into a parking spot at work and watching the back up camera and all the mirrors and missing that one, small broken off branch, that just poked a dent into your tailgate. Hooking up every piece of a/v electronics in your home to your lightning protection and then just running some cat5 network cable from the office router and having your internet struck by lightning All time personal favorite, and this didn't involve alcohol...... Using "Pam for grilling" for the first time on a lit grill. Fire shot right up the stream and sorta melted the nozzle resulting in a funny pffft sound. What did I do next you ask? Well like any man with a plan you put it up to your ear for a closer listen and it blows what was left of its seal and fills your ear with ice cold Pam.. And you stand there, like a deer and headlights, too dumb to move your hand, not believing what you just did to yourself.

  8. Altec Horn System – Transform your Klipschorns Complete Midrange Swap for Klipschorn. Biggest Improvement I made in Audio in over 30 years when I Installed these. $1700 Firm takes all. The Horns alone have been selling up around $1300 a pair on E-Bay, without the $500 Custom Paint Job these have. I have put a lot of Labor into this System. See this E-bay Listing for just the Horns, no Compression Drivers! Sold for $1381. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Altec-1005B-horns-mint-A5-parting-out-/141150480318?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item20dd3967be What’s included. Mount the Altec Horns and Khorn Tweeter on a new board and tweeter frame. Then Hook up the Crossover and Plug in your Amp. Picture below (Before Horns were Painted Gold) showing how Stands support Driver and Horn. I am only selling this Altec System, because I have ‘upgraded’ to an Oris Horn System that cost me about $6 Grand. I happily lived with the Altec Horn Midrange for 8 years. I would prefer local pickup, as I do not have any shipping materials for this system. But if someone is willing to pay for Professional Packing and Shipping at a UPS store, I will ship to the U.S. or Canada. The Drivers are Massive weighing in at 30 pounds apiece! I am located in the Minneapolis - St. Paul area of Minnesota.

  9. It's the 24 wide version. 15" driver, super efficient. This Super Sub is one of the main reasons horn Subs have such a good reputation. Was $495, now..............$375 by the guy who bought it. See last few posts.

  10. It was a surprise, but the new to me Onkyo 706 was delivered to my door at 9:30 PM personally by a forum member from Indianapolis. It's a long story, but you can't beat the service. I'll leave it to the forum member to cast off anonymity to take credit for the great service. I'm excited about experiencing the Audyssey feature of this AV receiver. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that it also has a phono section. Now if I can only steal the time to play with it.

  12. The original false corner in Klipsch's Dope from Hope did not attach to the Khorns in any way. The Khorns were just pushed back into the false corner with a rubber seal, just as they would be pushed into a room corner. It also had no top or bottom. There are reasons why a homeplate top (reflections and blockage if the top "homeplate" is above the mid and high horns; it would be o.k. if it is like mach-1's TSCM ) or bottom (raising the Khorn a bit off the floor) might conceivably cause problems. The sides of the false corner were made of 3/4" plywood, studs, with slightly thinner (1/2"?) plywood on the outside, away from the Khorns. I would be prejudiced in favor of 3/4" ply on both the inside and the outside. They extended 4 feet out from the corner they formed. People have said you need 4 feet, and Craig Stark mentioned 5 feet.

  13. But you may not want large casters, wheels, or feet to create a cavity under the Khorns or under the artificial corners.. I don't know how much of a cavity it takes to degrade bass response, but "No cavities" was one of PWK's cardinal rules. He warned that a cavity (what size??) deteriorated bass response in the bottom octave, and had some negative effect two octaves above. The advent of speakers on stands, legs, etc. annoyed him. I got a chuckle out your post. I know there is some reason for not having casters or cavities but I couldn't scientifically explain it here. There is a wealth of knowledge on spikes and stands for various components out on the internet and found books. Someone would have to do a hypothesis test (testing the null that there is no difference between stand mounted tower speakers and non stand mounted tower speakers) I am sure it would address the 2PI and "quasi free air' as a variable that contributes to the differences. This isn't the hypothesis test you are looking for, but PWK tested one of his speakers -- I forget which one -- on the floor v.s. up on a stool, and found that the stool position ruined the bass response. This was in rebuttal of a review in a column called "Sound Advice" that accused that particular Klipsch speaker of having no bass -- PWK had to put the speaker up on the stool to get the same bad response the reviewer got. He had done other testing re: cavities before that. Someone on the forum may have the references. I would think the effect of a good sized cavity would depend heavily on the speaker design. Klipsch Heritage speakers were designed to not have a cavity. Some modern direct radiators have jacked-up bass, so sound better when they are on stands and out from the walls (as the designs call for). They often have to have woofers that move back and forth over a greater distance than with horn loaded woofers, so they tend to be prone to frequency modulation distortion, and are less sensitive than Khorns, Jubs, La Scalas and Belle Klipsches. Also, IMO, there may be a trade-off between imaging and good, tight bass, so those who favor imaging may prefer speakers designed for stands or legs, and "out in the room" placement. I prefer Khorns, for dynamics, impact, and clean bass, and also like Belle Klipsches, La Scalas and Cornwalls in the corners in some rooms, and slightly out in the room in other rooms, always directly on the floor.

  14. PWK didn't like attenuators because he thought people would misadjust them. True enough, same-model JBLs of the '60s sounded different in every store, partly because of the sales folk quasi-randomly adjusting the attenuators. PWK didn't like equalizers either. In 1980 something Roy Delgado told me on the phone, "Mr. K doesn't like equalizers." I don't know what he would think with modern devices like Audyssey -- I only know it made my Khorns, Belle, and Heresey IIs sound better.

  18. That's the truth! I worry about long-range tinnitus and hearing loss in the employees there. I mentioned this out to a mid-level manager one time, and got the impression that they didn't want to deal with it. They really should.A particular offense was a wildly loud squealing ventilation fan. I thought it was a disgrace that employees had little choice to avoid that inner ear-destroying noise.

The opportunity to visit with Miss Valerie was the cherry on top of the sundae. She was SO kind and SO generous to my whole family. I hope all who attend have at least 1/10 the fun I had. You will be blown away. Hope is where it's at, BABY!!

  28. This is what's going to happen: 1. You're going to be blown away. 2. You're not going to understand how what little I did can possibly make that big of a difference. 3. You're not going to want to tell the complete truth about how you really feel because you know that everyone will think you're overstating things. 4. You will dial it down some because you're not going to want to sound over the top with your impressions. 5. Those who have experienced this will know what you're really hearing, but won't say anything because they don't want to be ridiculed by the naysayers. 6. The naysayers will say: a] you're hearing what you want to hear, B] hearing an improvement because you want to c] hearing an improvement because I said you would, d] hearing an improvement because you spent money, oops, can't use that one. e] placebo, because all caps sound the same (in spite of the fact that they actually measure differently). I actually think it's the resistors, but don't tell anyone. Hearing an improvement because you're really hearing an improvement won't be a consideration. I've been doing this for 10 years. The patterns and reactions are predictable and well established.

  37. In my home/pro solid state 2 ch system i prefer in order from least to most preferred and can hear the difference in a huge way. Least imo is hdmi, optical, rca, xlr...Balanced xlr results in best sound quality. Xlr provides such strong signals i can sit directly in front of my left speaker and hear my right speaker and vice versa at high and low volume levels. With rca i can a bit at high volumes although not near as clearly

  45. In the very near future for me as these were waiting for me when I got home today! Next 5 days off is going to be fun. Just thought I keep in this thread Nice pics! heresy over quartets i gotta say. definately with crites components. I would have to take the quartets over my h3's as well. basically due to price alone. The heresy3 may sound a bit better and have bi wire 5 ways although the sound is so close lower price trumps. and a bit weathier bass output. With crites components the quartets easily. I love them black ones on page 1! My quartets were oak with green grilles so i had to sell till i find a black pair i can afford that are close for pic-up .. . .. .

  46. I'v had a couple heathkit tube amps as well as others and a scott sounds like the ticket. "Big" scott amp means i have no choice i have to visit. I would like to wait a few months then try to buy your amp lol maybe you will be ready to try somthing new christmas time or for the new year. I love big cities at christmas time and havnt seen new york in years in the winter. man, i have had some focal speakers at 1 time. they must not be the real focal. maybe focul lol idk. I have ran through infinitys, jbls, boston acoustics, dcm, advents and too many other flagship speakers im sure you and everybody knows the drill...till i met a true 3rd generation audiophile who told me straight up get all klipsch and i wasnt new to klisch although not to anything other than kg.5's basically and they were what i always resorted back to. now i understand...i have to say with the klipsch design there has to be an amazing aftermarket monitor built off this forum that grows on the ear...The cornscala 3 way. A Scott amp is what i need. the guy that pushed me into klipsch had 2 crown tube monoblocks rated 175watts each. iv been trying to figure out what they were. I might have to dig out my old phone to ask him personally. he was running stock chorus 2's

  48. I believe every word you said so im onboard here. You answered my next thought about the 3 way cornscala. I also appreciate the invite to hear heaven. I have heard a lot of speakers from the $50k on an over 100lb conrad johnson amp and im totally engulfed in my own radios compared, by a long shot. I have used custom cabs and built custom speakers with my preference of crossover although i know with freinds i have i can obtain very good drivers and build under retail about a $4 or 5k cornscala for way less. I have spent at least $10k out of my pocket in the last year alone on audio so im not afraid to spend more because im going to. I have spent at least $500 with bob crites alone in the last 2 months. I may get in touch with him and build a pair. As i move at the moment...and arrive at my new home by the beginning of the year i am going to put together a 2 ch system and its gotta be different than anything i have ever seen or heard of. I have the conclusion im gathering ideas for the next several months to get to what i want. The cornscala is definately the right direction. And it sure will be tube driven and all derived from this website. Im 36 so it also has to last another 36 yrs i figure. Im aiming to begin in approximately january. Maybe a good idea would be for me to begin a thread here or just go through what i read. I just want to get it right once not after a few tries. Thank you for filling my mind. You have ironically because of my interest in klipsch and the website helped me with the 2 most important aspects of my custom 2ch tube radio build.

  49. Loalol...i love it! Will obtain for my vocabulary, thank you Dr. Morbius. Did you buy or build your cornscalas? Either way are there anybody building these from Bob Crites diagram and selling? I guess i could talk to Bob yet wanted to ask you. I am going to take your advice soon and jump on board with NOS for sure. I love the i believe, VRD mono blocks. Little pricey but so tasty. I am very hoping he has can get me somthing together a little more reasonably although that is 1 now im trying to pick up info on cornscalas if you could help me here. I wanted to put all chorus 2's in a full system although im looking now into the cornscala center&surrounds all tube maybe 2 cw's in there. Thank you for your help and direction

  50. several years ago i traded for my first true 500x2@8ohms solid state amplifier. At the same time i got a nice vintage12x2@8ohms tube amp. I was running 5.1 to 7.2 at the time and could run equal stereo on all channels. I ran the 500x2 ss on main fronts and ran the 12x2 tube amp on my surrounds...anyhow mains were cornwalls and surrounds were klipsch thx ultras. The 12x2 ran on the cw's or klipsch ultras kept up with the 500x2 on the opposite pr of speakers very very well. I also tried many many other setups at the time using solid state at front and tube surrounds in all modes through several pre amps including an adcom gfa 500II in stereo as well as side by side and without computer comparisons then or now tube just sounded amazing. If you have not tried a tube amp i suggest you do just to check it out. I try everything and use what works best for the best price possible these days. I currently use a few tube amps in rotation biamping mids/highs at the moment but sort of prefer new, modern tube amps with new tubes although have several vintage tube amps and nos tubes in my collection. i prefer new myself due to the maintnance and upkeep of vintage tube amps.servicing equipment is a must. new tube amps use new tubes better than old with new and vice versa...depending on upgradesof vintage equipment. My vintage amps are original no modern caps although 2 in particular were 60's factory ceo modded. What im getting at is that it is in the ears of the beholder . . . . litterally. I prefer solid state due to cost(actually tube if i could afford)although not using that old of vintage klipsch. The sensitivity of klipsch speakers is where you will find the key. khorns with a sensitivety of 105db on a 5 watt tube amp is so much more efficient than anything period. I use for my main room 2 center pro heresys with a sensitivety of 103 each both on approx 60 watts on tube amp which equals a lot in ss comparison of wattage. Tube wattage should be multiplied by approximately 3 to equal its solid state cohorts. Then using vintage or new klipsch being so efficient you get some major purity in sound. This is in somebodys avatar here in the forum...horns like tubes and woofers like solid state and its true although you can find a lot of profound fun comparisons between the 2 although this sttement is very true to the ear
