  5. This is a classic: I was 19 and just out of high school. Got a summer job working at a steel tank head fab shop. We made tank heads of all sizes. Some went together like a puzzle and would be 50 feet across. One day another fella and I were told to get the 25K lb rough terrain forklift (big tires taller than a man) and go unload a gondola type railroad car loaded with steel plate at the dock. As I recall it was about 200,000 lbs of steel total weight with car and everything. The railroad car though was not all the way up to the dock. We tried but could not get the job done without moving the car. That little problem was about to get much bigger LOL. My partner directed me to get in the condola car and manually release the brakes while he pushed the car with the big forklift we had. Seemed reasonable to me, so I climbed in the gondola with the plate steel, unlocked the brake and started to release it. My forklift operator started pushing the car. All went well at first and he got the car in the correct position on the dock. BUT very slowly the car started pushing back on the forklift! I heard the big tires on the forklift start spinning and the railroad car was still moving. I started frantically turning the brake wheel as fast as I could only to realize I was going the wrong way and I could see the chain getting more slack in it. Now the loaded car were really moving. The steel was falling back down in the condola from where we had previously attempted to get it out. I was jumping around in the car to keep from getting pinched. Faster and faster the runaway car was gaining speed. I considered jumping off but it was just too high. After what seemed like an eternity I finally hit a derail about 1 mile down grade from that dock. The car cut through about a doz cross ties doing all kinds of damage to the track. All the while I'm holding on for dear life! Right side wheels were against the left side rail. Front trucks were crossed. Scared the you know what out my green butt. I was OK though. In the following days Norfolk Southern dispatched two heavy cranes ($1500 each my boss said) to get the car back on the track. A track crew came and made the necessary repairs. NS also lauched a full investigation interviewing both of us about the incident. The other fella got a weeks suspension without pay. (he was the senior employee of us two). I was told to never release the manual brake on a RR car again. From that day on I was know as "The Box Car Cowboy" to all my coworkers LOL.

  7. The cabinets are ugly, but solid, and I tested the drivers for resistance and they test good. The crossovers will need reworked, and I'll need to get some some K-77M or CT-125 tweeters for them. The woofers and mids passed the Porcupine Tree playing on the Droid through the HK amp test, so I'm happy wth what I have to start with. I would have paid more for two Crites woofers and four sheets of Lowe's birch than I paid for these, and the seller was passing through town on the way to another deal, so he delivered from an hour away. First things first. I'm going to fill in the voids with wood filler and build the edges and corners back up. I know if I get them working, I'll just listen to them, and then they'll keep their brutalized visage forever. Can't have that. So, after the initial repair is done, it will be decision time -- shoot them back to a nice glossy black, or give them a pretty veneer, or some of each. My first instinct is to shoot the inside gloss black and do the front, tops, and sides in a walnut or bubinga veneer. I'll see how it evolves. This will be my first significant restoration process, so I'll have a lot to learn. Maybe I should start on my Heresys and then move on to these? Nah. Why be sensible when you can jump in with all four feet?

  8. I have a tendency to put in some music at night, usually ambient or classical. Set the volume down around -35dB and I'll fall asleep and let the music play all night. I'm curious if this is harmful? I have rf82 II's in the front, rc52 center and rb61 for surround, outlaw audio lfm1+ for sub, running off of a Yamaha rx-v871 Any thoughts?

  9. Where in CA are you? I live in Las Vegas and have an "extra" pair of P37s that I am using as surrounds with P38's and a soon to arrive P27c. They are way overkill for surround duty and in mint condition with boxes. Merlot. I will PM you. Chris

  10. These Klipschorns are stock except for the replacement capacitors on the factory crossovers. My solid state Sony power amp might be considered less than ideal, but my system sounds very good, and I frequently compare it with the many live music events I attend. Enjoyment of one's sound system can be greatly affected by the listening room acoustics. Before getting these Klipschorns many years ago, I previously had a pair of stock La Scalas in that room for ten years, and whenever i turned the volume up high, they sounded " bright" and "harsh". Then one day I loaned those same La Scalas and amp to an outdoor party, and I could hardly believe how smooth and powerful they sounded. That was when I realized my "harshness" problem was caused by room echo. I have since then dampened the same room with acoustic ceiling treatments, some home-made wall panels and corner bass traps. Now the harshness is gone, and I just hear the music. I love my Klipsch speakers.

  11. Exwife #2. The house was oriented such that the garages faced edgewise and we had a large concrete parking pad behind them. When her brother in law would visit he'd park his truck at the far edge of that pad. Exwife #2 backed her new Subaru out of the garage and into said parked truck. Not all that terrible if it had only happened once. 2 X in one week and then again the next year. Ayup 3 times the lady back her Subaru into the guys truck in precisely the same situation. That makes a bloop, blunder, stoopid............ The same lady once drove around for a week on a flat tire wondering what that little light on the dashboard meant.

  12. I feel everyone's pain, I really do. Unfortunately, the search function in this version of the forum software is widely regarded as horrible. The only thing I can say repeat to everyone is that we've been promised a brand-new search system in version 4.0 of the software. When that comes out, they've not let us know. I'm assuming by sometime this summer as they keep relaying posts about all the other new features (with screenshots). In the meantime, a sub-optimal workaround is going to Google and doing a search like: site:community.klipsch.com rf-7

  15. The points i have is with the line of sheraton hotels, spg points with a membership gold card. I had checked to see if there was one in Hope to pay for a banquet room for this weekend 28th&29th. I know for sure there are several in and around Indianapolis. I better call soon to see if its possible to rent a large convention room and ask about possible locations. July is very soon as well edit:after reading at sheraton indianapolis online there are dates in july(mid july are some discounted rates)that may be possible to be noisy in a farely large banquet room. i still need to call for pricing which i plan to pay for a gathering in the banquet room if possible(basically a mid sized banquet room downtown with tables and some chairs at this time) edit:a note to readers i am not trying to get points from your stay. if this could happen i plan on having zero points and just enough money to get home

  17. He's a really good kid. As I've mentioned before, he keeps his room EXTREMELY tidy, everything has it's place and his Klipsch setup is in the EXACT same condition as when I bought it. He takes very good care of what he has and since he was young, we have tried not to spoil our children and typically if they want something, they either save up and pay for it themselves or we will sometimes pay 1/2. Unless it's their birthday or Christmas, I usually want them to have some investment in whatever they are wanting. I think they will be better off for it when they get out on their own.

  19. either way makes it nice if i were closer id be interested to support the cause. looks like a bell horn they used as a mid like you would see in intercom systems in large buildings/shops. sure beats the valcano exibit kids do. there are some obvious misinterpretations though such as actually using the corner to seal the low end frequency driver although a great place to start. I wish some adult now who was once involved in the builds could chime in mentioning how much they have learned and show the possible new up to date klipschorn they built thats identical to actual khorn specs. They really did put some work and time into them and is interesting. Looks like this experiment may have been in the 60's or earlier

  22. Those pics look great. Every now and then i put my 5000's up on clist for $500 just to see if any klipsch guys are nearby. Between my 5000's and 1st pair of heesy ii i just find them to tough to sell. If somebody offered solid 5 $100 bills i might do it but would really take a couple nights to decide. I feel in good shape they will become more rare. They are also nice because you dont need a stand for them. Hurts my stomach to think about selling them. Granite i do have other klipsch smaller and bigger i wont sell regardless, possibly even thousands lol idk i hate thinking about that happening.

  24. I have a pair of t5000. the 12"woofer is same as a h3 being 4ohms, ribbed and labled woofer of 5000 is k28k 4ohms compared to the h3 k28e and 4 ohms. I have reconed them both with pro klipsch replacement cones. and put bob crites ti diaframs in. they do need updated xovers but comparing to h2 they are better sounding overall and sound as good as an h3. up to the forte they are equal forte 2 very close maybe easier to place in a room. the biggest downfall with the larger tangents the black covering flakes off. Next the crossovers i would compare to heresy and sound better recapped at the 20 year mark. I have never seen or heard of anybody actually owning the 5000 so i will not sell them for the rare factor. In a lineup i put them right before the great sound of the forte 2. Great on tubes and take power same or better than heresys, h2&3. I have owned quite a few tangent and heard most. The next part i will be honest about is the cabinets. with supports they would handle more power. Im a black finish klipsch person so these have fit right in with me. The last tangents i sold were the t3000 with the 8" and k76. They were beat up but better than the similar kg 3.5. I have tried different mods with my 5000's and they are now mint stock with new cones and ti tweeters. Stated here are my opinions of course although i have owned and heard so many collections as well as other audiophiles hearing my gear in comparison to theirs and others I know whats good and not and not biased not even to klipsch. bottom line is klipsch is the best

  26. that is funny. i even had to look that up and learn something Now where to start. I never change the channel i just leave it on the same channel its on when i get up and watch til mrs beeker changes it, when im not in the room of course normally when im alseep in the other room. Its been on cnn for about a day now while i work on my bracket I have my globe here and i had to take a very large painting off the wall to post clips and post its with clues. I ran out of foil so my personal notes may be a little off course. Anyhow after studying the bush regime way before prescott my lucky red tack is planted 7hrs directly north of when the left turn was made. All civilians were lost after 20minutes at 45000 feet. Unfortunately we are using this knowledge to look this area of the middle east and china and anywhere else we can sneak around while the maylay flight is hot news. I really killed my lower back today carrying 1 polk monitor 10a. Im a healthy looking guy kinda like mr t and i cant even take the trash out anymore. kinda depressed earlier. I love tube amps jammimg my chorus ii and i heard one of those $2000 mono fishers today. Thank you all for your time I still gotta figure this out so i can vote

  33. On Ebay I use a guy that calls his company "Primeamp" out of Kowloon HongKong, all my tube amps come from him, Direct copies of Mcintosh, fisher, and others, and he backs them up. to this date iv purchased 6 tube amps, and a set of Mono Blocks for the wife. could not be happier.

  35. Well iv been running two channel tubes for ten years but I do not count the first five, learning curve. Involved in electronics since 10 years old, but my tube stuff was all SSB/Ham linear amps, slowly phasing out of the Ham world. Class 'A' Amps, tube, once acquired is my passion now. 40+ years talking to the world as a Ham operator has not given me the feeling I can get with an hour of Class A listening.

  36. Screaming deal there 'J', if I was 2500 miles closer this would be a done deal. You will have little problem selling them for that kind of scratch. If however your future plans include moving out west, maybe we could work something out.

  37. Hearing the artist fingers sliding up and down the strings, is, well........ heaven. Aint nothing like tubes, 30 years I ran solid state , some of the Bad boy amps of yesteryear, only been into tubes about 5 years. SS has its place, in Bass, anything Bass, tubes however handle mids and highs. just cannot beat them. ---IMO---

  39. Solid state amplifiers cost just as much as vacuum tube amplifiers. All depends on choice&taste tube to ss is apple to an orange. its been said its nice to enjoy different setups ss one day or room and tube the other. i love hooking up my big ss crown macro techs to my chorus iis and knocking stuff over with the with high dbs. i also love warming one of my 12x2 knight tube up to my belles. they both serve their purpose in my life. solid state is good in stereo although they run so nice in surround sound applications. at times i like to run all tube power in my surround sound minus my bass driver section. i have a couple of these yaqin mc10L's from china one of which is american modded and sounds so good. rolling tubes in the stock version is a great value for approx $640 and can be modded yourself or by a good tech(my suggestion)as you get money. everybody should have a tube amp on tap always regardless of how you feel about them. out of my tube amps a couple of the vintage are completely original minus few caps being replaced and being over 50 years old are very exceptional sounding. at the same time my powered monitors serve their purpose in my home as well. In my collection out of 25amplifiers ss&tube and I have no idea how many speakers besides modding/upgrading i have only had to recone 2 woofers, replace 1 cord, toss 2 receivers(1marantz and 1hk)due to user error and replace 4 power tubes in 5 years.

  41. The klipsch forum is a great place in the high end audio world. It was then and now even better. Very well done to all who contributed their time to rebuild. It was worth the patience. Will there be a trader rating added for people making sales and trading items on the garage/for sale section of the forum? Easily I rate the new klipsch forum 5 stars. Very clean, a smooth easy to navigate online audio paradise!

  42. They do love watts. You just nailed why im stuck on my crown at 440wattsx2 @8ohms with a mid level adcom pre and i have several crown macro techs and rotel and adcom blocks but every day im home im jammimg whats in my sig. I would buy any black pair within reach that i can find and im gonna go ahead and buy oak if i have too...klipsch chorus are just the best, even in bone stock form and then feed them watts. Without doubt my chorus will be in my go to systems forever. I wouldnt trade r sell mine for nothing i love the pair i have .. . .. . the purchuse of my cw's again soon are for surround use. there's not room for chorus on either side or in back of my 7.1 at the moment. They sound great on tubes too, even biamped tube on horns ss on the 15's. Big watts trump. A freind of mine has his on 2 tube mono blocks at 175watts each. Speechless is all i can say. There are very limited amounts of the crown tube blocks so im not even trying to obtain, maybe someday my luck will hit a pair . .. . ..

  43. Very nice my friend. Klipsch wise i have owned everything xept klipschorns. I simply havnt had the room. I have a very nice pair of black belles that dont fit anywhere in my home although will keep them with my collection til my days end assume. Bob Crites is my go to guy for anything klipsch. I have spent over $1k in the past 6 months with him which is when i began using his services. You will notice an good sound reproducing difference with everything he does to anything. With a line up such as your high end monitor list i would be interested in seeing how you fare with the cw. Between the cw and chorus 2 i have found my preference in audio without doubt. I also own a nice array of jbl pro and studio monitors. It is nice to see you are making a lateral movement in sound as i see your change in quality speakers. Probably nice for you to have a break from speakers worth as much as a car for a while!

  44. wow lol that is how i feel or what im doing right now haha sounds crazy tho[] I gotta say tho shakeydeal, im looking to invest in more audio and have went frrom focals to b&w to planars and i keep coming back to cornwalls. I had a pair and were the second pair of klipsch i had and its either gonna be cw's or cornscalas. I may go with another pair of chorus 2's although i need somthing a bit thinner

  45. Please update your findings. Interesting debate on your venture. Yeah that rotel, well yeah is all i will say...it will do well with both. Now i will say auditioning both with about any slurry of music you will very likely find the forte II trump with your rotel. That rotel will push the chorus fine although i would lean forte II in this situation. Now if you were using a home avr or smaller amp then i would say chorus . . . by the way love your avatar

  46. I have a pair of RB-35's(preceeded RB-81's) and are fantastic speakers IMO. Plenty of punch and detail. The 81's are even better with their lower crossover point and slightly larger cabinet volume. Five of either would definitely be symmetrical and perfectly timber matched. Five RB-5's may even sound better. Bill
