  1. Pride, ego. I'm guilty of it too. No one likes having their opinions contradicted or put under the microscope. There is also the problem of lack of body language and many times things just don't translate well with the keyboard - and so it leads to misunderstandings. Something else I've noticed is how many simply can't deal with being challenged. IOWs, as they say, they like to dish it out but they can't take it. When they find out they can't get away with personal attacks and/or derogatory statements, they leave. This forum used to be inhabited by older adults, most who were fairly technical and level headed, though admittedly not always. There isn't near the participation there used to be - sometimes I notice there's only three people browsing a section of the forum.

  2. They don't sound anything alike, not even remotely in the same ballpark. Heritage has a horn loaded midrange (compression driver) that runs to the hot side, and Reference does the midrange with cones. Heritage is an acquired taste. They are not smoother than Reference, in fact, they closely mimic a live performance, which often sounds brash and disjointed. Many end up changing the horns and tweeters in order to find the smoothness and refined quality found in Reference and other more conventional designs. With Reference, by the time the horn takes over - the midrange is long gone. Based on the information you provided, it doesn't sound like you have room for what amounts to being rather large plywood boxes, and trust me, it's a sound you will want to hear first before investing in. The 7s will serve you well, I owned them for many years before moving to Klipschorns and then Jubilees. I've also owned Heresys and Cornwalls. I eventually sold everything and built my own monitors, craving simplicity. Enjoy where you're at, you may someday find yourself wishing you'd never left.

  5. Yes Dean, right here, right here looking at that fine specimen of a crossover you have for a avatar. That is kind of what I have in mind for the wife's Khorns. Still, I have not got into their guts to confirm/rewire speakers, im waiting on my bank and have little motivation for anything else.

  7. And yet another day begins of my "John Lennon" protest, (Day three of coffee/duggans, movies, sleep). Silent protest/waiting for the bank to kick down a piece of the nest egg, then it's party time, well as soon as I pay OFF all the bills. Pulled enough out to give the wife her gambling binge (three days should do it), and her/me a little speaker upgrade funding.

  8. Awesome you made it aboard here at klipsch. I certainly admire your direction and driving force. Heresy on tubes with lp. Easy thing is that as are stage monitors extremely efficient your heresy' are as well.. You can use your speakers with the smallest of amp around and will get equal what most speakers output with their lower efficiency.. In your situation i would certainly find great appeal in a simple 12x12 integrated tube amplifier. Also if you find more watts it will also provide incredible sound.. Still with 12wpc and even a few less or more with all proper functioning units all speakers(networks etc..), amplifier and playback machine of your choice aprox 12x12 watts will offer so great of sound. Very ample. Just helping open the possibilities to more to get the best of experience each listen you have... Cheers

  9. I am a fan of Fisher. Back in the day they were considered top shelf, and equal in price to McIntosh. Today, the gear is less expensive by a wide margin. If you are looking for a receiver rather than preamp-amp, then look at the 500C and 800C models. They are the flagships, unless I am mistaken. Lots of good data on them, and they will at least hold their value if they don't go up in value.

  14. Been looking for a vintage ss receiver/amp for 2-channel. Well, I bid on a Yamaha CR-600, Pioneer CT-F2121, and a Quasar cd player-with a faux wood case, also came with an old Pioneer rack. Anyway, I won the bid for $68 for all of these items. I will say the Yamaha is TOTALLY MINT-not one scratch on the wood case, and it works flawlessly-rockin the Cornwall II's now. I haven't hooked up the other stuff yet. I was really interested in the Yamaha. As a side note, I picked up a mini-system-Yamaha GX-505 for $30. Gonna give that to my parents,. These items came from an estate sale, I swear the Yamaha receiver was hardly used, all the knobs are really smooth. Needless to say, I am stoked!!

  15. I know there exist the parameters for similar horns, like the JMLC horn and maybe others. I am very sure the Oris flare is not available. I looked for it, and even asked Bert for it, back when I was experimenting with making a modified center channel. You will just have to spend time with a search engine and I'm sure you will find plenty of stuff. Look up the Azurahorn. This gent has built his own, think based on JMLC, and they look very nice. http://www.azurahorn.com/index.html

  18. ". . . test bad" I don't need no stinkin' tests. I can cram for urine tests, but I can't test capacitors. The $50 figure is for all caps on the 706 HDMI board. I figure that once inside, replace them all. The parts cost is relatively low. The time expenditure is high. Some threads and videos reference a dozen caps that fail causing the problem. I figure that heat affects them all, so replace them all at once, rather than going at it piecemeal . Other than a fan, I'll do nothing to the 707. It is truly brand new. Without a fan it should go for years before exhibiting the same symptoms, if it ever does. With a fan, I expect it will outlive me. I'll let you know how it goes.

  22. I set all my speakers as large.. Even the La Scalas. ;-) Why? I was told to set all speakers to small to make it easier on your AV and let the subs do what they were meant to do.Try both ways and go with what's best to your ears. No reason not to try. I have tried running lots of different ways and like my fronts set to large. It sounds a bit fuller to my ears. When I run them small even xo at 40hz it still sounds just a tiny bit thinner.

  23. If you have a local guitar center watch for used passive 18" subs to come in. Possibly even craigslist and ebay and a little patience will pay off ... Even find a couple empty 18" cabinets then buy 2 subs and an amp and you will never once look back or even wonder again. When i joined this forum i couldnt imagine what i was reading what peeps were doing with 1 or 2 15's... then watching many go to single or dual 18's...I was hooked...I had used some in pa although at home was never a thought for me.. Now once i got them then built custom enclosures to result in greater bass noise(quality for my room) i cannot imagine anything else. My reason for checking this thread out was i also still test and have a few powered subs in other rooms. My main theater or main surround system it just cannot be any other way... I hope you would consider. Its actually very doable even when it does not seem even remotely possible...it ads so much more than i ever imagined. Best regards to you

  24. Agreed. Very hard for me to wanna buy a sub anymore K5 why not order a sub and box from parts express. You'll be hooked. More fun than opening them....building them! So easy.

  27. That is exactly what i wanted to post on the lines of marantz... I will say and sure there are gentlemen around here that run these very models of marantz with heresys... That said...They work great together...I do have to say they are grrreat choices, any of them. A tube amp with heresy' and turntable will melt a stone cold killer...

  31. Here is an interesting tid bit: Bass frequencies don't take any more power than any other frequencies at the same SPL, but we are much less sensitive to bass frequencies so for a low note to sound/feel as loud as a midrange or high note (until our hearing drops off) it takes much more power. For example, to sound as loud as a 1 kHz tone at 70 dB SPL, a 40 Hz tone must be at 90 dB. That extra 20 dB is 100 times the power! So if your speakers only need 1 W to produce that 70 dB, 1 kHz tone, then a 40 Hz tone requires 100 W to sound as loud. Wow! Power management of the HT system is vastly overlooked IMHO. Having the Mains not producing the LF means less speaker cone breakup and a more dynamic midrange. In the above example you can clearly seem what is going on with the avr/amp headroom. In general, more headroom is desirable.

  34. This type of set up question is one of the most asked. They make it harder to get by labeling them large and small i think. It should just be labeled bass management on or off imo.

  39. The KG 3.2, 4.2, & 5.2 have sealed cabinets with a passive woofer on the front, located below the active. The KG 3.5, 4.5, & 5.5 are ported in the front. Yes this is nitpicky and off topic. mmcarbo, any luck? You'll have to remove the upper woofer to do this, but check the wires that connect to each woofer. It's possible a connection came loose and you're operating with one or two unpowered woofers. If the innards check out, I agree with others in trying a different receiver or amp and comparing the bass to your new Yamaha. Some HT receivers just don't have the oomf. Not picking on Yamaha here. Carl asked a good question. What did you use before the Yamaha? Good catch! Mustang guys a bit uppity with his lascalas lol glad your correcting him so i can help rub it in. Man Craig, time to get some kg's or just study them lol. Poor folks like me only know the facts apparently

  40. Just be aware that the hole is big and deep and you never seem to come out of the hole. It gets kinda comfy down here. Haha I've owned my share of both Reference and Heritage (current debate going on right now on which are truly heritage speakers). To my ears, the Reference are amazing for HT. I just acquired my first pair of LaScalas and as soon as I can carve out some time, I want to do some direct A/B Comparison between my RF-83 and the LaScalas for both HT and 2ch. As mentioned, you will need a solid sub for both Reference and for Heritage but the Reference will provide more bottom end. I'm in the process myself of trying to determine which I will keep in my HT (RF-83 or LaScala). My advice, try and listen to as many different Klipsch speakers that you can so you can tell for yourself what your ears prefer.

  41. Cosmic_surfer, Hi! Welcome to the forums!! Come in and stay a while.... I bought my mother and father a RF-7 home theatre setup and I use to have Klipschorns and La Scalas. I now have 7 Klipsch TSCMs which is the Klipsh Pro Version of Klipschorns. To me, the RF-7s provide a very nice home theatre and an obvious wife or mother acceptance factor, but the Referance is not nearly as good for music to my ears, and as such, the Heritage also makes a more articulate center channel. Anything the Heritage may lack in Bass can be handled by a Killer sub or two, or four subs!! The main recquisition for Heritage like Klipschorns and La Scalas is space. You need a room big enough to not only look appropriate, but to let them breathe. Many here will argue that Klipschorns sound good in a small room, and they do, but you really haven't heard them if you haven't heard them with 20 feet between the right and left channels. How big is the room you are thinking of doing in Heritage anyhow??? Look forward to your response. Roger

Babies I guess would be OK if they were twins, that way they could cry in stereo. Certainly no GUNS, unless you refer to them as "Brooms or Noisemakers." Ahh Heck, All your pictures are good. Welcome to the chaos we call the forum! John

  45. About "checking it out"... what would I be looking / listening for? Distortion, crackling noise, anything unusual when delivering extreme volume. For HT they should be fine...or other. Hook them up correctly and you should be good to go. Let us know please.
