  2. I've had Trader Joe's I don't remember if I liked it or not, I know it wouldn't be worth me driving out west of town to purchase it. Weather is awesome here the last couple of days. I even was able to pour some concrete last night for my bar. After mowing the lawn tonight, I will try to get it framed up.

  16. Okay we get it.......some come here for audio discussions only! There are those here who get excited by graphs and charts and the technical content that some of the rest of us could care less about. We appreciate your participation and what you add to the forum. Since I joined in 2005 there has been General Discussion for all other topics of interest and now we have the Lounge where folks can feel apart of the group even if they don't know a tube from a transistor. A place where newbies can get their feet wet and not be intimidated. That is why the forum is divided into different areas of interest. If you are not interested in 3 Minutes To Miller Time (one of the longest run threads) or Right This Minute.....then move on to what you are interested in. I do not agree that every topic other than technical threads are Facebook like post. That is insulting to many here. That would be like me telling a tech head to go to the DIY forum or to John W.'s forum. We are a community and in a community there are varied interest. I don't usually rant but a couple of post here from folks telling us what is viable and what will sustain this forum has annoyed me to no end. For the record post count means little to me. I have learned from newbies and veterans alike. I do not share one poster's fear for this forum. If we allow each other to contribute where we can......the little nuggets we mine will continue to snowball as it has for the nine years I have been here Rant over.

  17. Our recent move to AZ ushered in a unique opportunity to reunite some old friends. All four La Scala were crafted in Hope, shipped to Europe for military sale, thoroughly enjoyed, then shipped back stateside with their original owner at the end of his term. Separated in the mid 90's. ...now reunited for playback, the first time in about twenty years. The five of us had a quiet moment together in the garage (no amps allowed). The shipping boxes have a story to tell. Yes sir, this fireteam has badges, scars....rank. I simply got lost for a while looking at the wear and tear, fixated on the old labeling, wondering about the many hands they've past through and where the boxes have been stored over the years. Snapped some photos for posterity. Enjoy.

  20. Could just be a matter of economies of scale. Turn this into mass production and unit cost drops. If the durability purported is factual - the duration of use and its scope of practicality could warrant the costs. Wonder what sort of underlayment is required?

  21. I was really getting into photography as a hobby and needed a way to pay for some expensive glass and DSLR bodies. I managed to land a couple of small gigs to get me started and then continued into weddings, engagements, and some architectural work at a local college for their website. DFW is SATURATED with photographers willing to do shit work for dirt cheap. When non-professional customers pay you, they expect to have creative control in your work. Money brings restrictive parameters. Money also brings deadlines. Shooting weddings is super stressful (for me). I hate studio work. I needed to spend more time and money than I had in order to make my photography capable of being a sustaining enterprise. I also felt my time, effort, and aesthetic was worth more than this current market would bear. I'm no fashion fotog, but I was quite a few steps above the MWAC's. Ultimately it just became a chore to even think about gigs, let alone actually do them. So I sold all my gear, bought a little Panasonic GF1 with 20mm kit lens and haven't looked back. I don't even pick that camera up nearly as often these days, except for when I want some better quality pics/videos of my kid(s) or a fun event. Maybe photography wasn't a passion after all..

  22. I went to get them, and decided to pass. They are worth $500 but they need quite a bit of body work. I just refinished one to an auto body type finish and for all the work it took I could have worked overtime at my job and paid for a brand new pair of Lascalla IIs. These were in worse shape than that one was. I thought if I could just lightly sand and spray fresh paint it would be worth it, but these need more. Again they are probably worth $500 just not to me. I don't mind the idea of the alerts section but in the past some overenthusiastic members have taken it upon themselves to call sellers and let them know what they think the item may be worth, even if that value is wrong.

  23. Post it and say you are on the way. We are fair people here. If we had a list of people by area willing to help or looking to buy, that would be useful. I feed deals to friends in their local area all the time, but I don't know everyone. Sometimes posting things gets in the way, other times it get a fellow forum member a great deal. It is a tough call. The best deals though, so you need to jump on them. Good luck, I hope you get the La Scala, they are one of my favorites.

  24. Insurance, did that for years, I now understand you desire, to me insurance was as exciting as watching paint dry. What about this, print up some business cards and try it on the side for fun and see where it goes. I didn't realize you were in Dubai, being one of the very few, or only person with this much passion for it, it may take off ? Considering the average money there you could be onto something big, who knows ? I do know the feeling about having people work for you, when we did landscaping we had at the most one or two other people helping, I was worried that it wouldn't have went as we wanted without being there to see it ourselves, and this was on the outside of there homes. That is really bad in a way, we easily could have had a couple of crews doing the work and grew the company much bigger really fast, but I was not comfortable depending on others to do it exactly how we wanted, I am sure it was our loss.

  25. Thanks for the replies. Actually, my father owns and runs his own business (an insurance brokerage) which I am currently working for. The reason I want to try something else is that I want to do something in line with my passion/hobby. Ideally, I would want to run a business where I can manage and handle everything on my own (or at max have only a few people). I really dislike depending on people (for certain things) because I feel they will never do as good of a job as me (i.e. if you want to do something right, do it yourself). However, if we can manage to bring our insurance brokerage business to a level where it would simply run on its own without my father being there everyday (I know this statement is contradicting me not liking depending on people), that would be the ideal situation because all I would have to do in life is worry about my passions/hobbies and not about money. Guess I should just stick with what I am doing now. Lastly, the high-end enthusiast home theater scene here in Dubai is quite small. Even thought nearly every major audio brand is available here, not many people actually own high-end or "enthusiast" home theaters. I was watching a show on TV that was showcasing some people's houses in Dubai and one of the houses had a home theater. It had a large projection screen hooked-up to Bose-like speakers.

  29. I'm a big Tolkien fan. Read all the books, watched several versions of the Hobbit. This movie was a bit of a let down for me. I haven't researched it but I'll bet it was originally meant for 3D. There's too many scenes where it looks like the cinematography was geared toward an effect as opposed to telling the story. I also agree on it being a little long in the tooth.

  30. The B3 network is designed for the K52K it will not sound right with the K55M or V without modification. Replace the K55M with a K52 and sell the M to cover the replacement costs. You should have the K-77M tweeters in them. Bob's tweeters will make them sound different,

  38. Sorry for the confusion....I thought I had mentioned earlier in this thread that I did run EZSetup (Harman Kardon's auto calibration software) with the supplied microphone. After running it, you can go into manual settings and make adjustments from what EZSetup made. It was from there that I set the Test Tone to Manual so I can cycle manually through each speaker and make adjustments to ensure they are all equal volume. Yes, the LaScalas were exactly where the screenshot shows them. The rest of the speakers were very close to where they are in the screenshot. I believe I had to turn my surround backs up several dB to get them to match but the rest were around 1-2dB off. Mic is probably 6ft - 7ft from the main speakers (this is temporary until I rebuild the front wall). I did play a scene from transformers and turned the volume up to where the SPL meter was bouncing from 95dB - 100dB and it was still probably set to around -20dB on the volume. As long as I've had the HK, I don't think I've ever listened to it at 0dB. That would be insanely loud.

  39. Yeah. It's funny how none of that applies to me. I guess to appreciate the sport of basketball you had to have grown up in the ghetto where that's all there was to play, or maybe had a sadistic gym teacher who forced you to stay inside even on sunny days to play basketball. Or maybe to appreciate automobile racing you had to grow up in a garage or near a race track and spent all your free time trying to make your Chevette go faster. I sometimes think to even begin to understand soccer you had to have grown up in England or Brazil, because, lets get real, what an unfathomable mess that off sides rule is. if you weren't raised in a barn horse racing is completely mystifying, trust me, I know, because I wasn't. This old north central Texas Boy will just stick to the sports he can understand.

  40. Ok, so this morning, I set my test tones to manual and set it to the front left speaker and increased the volume till my SPL Meter read 85dB. Most of the speakers were very close and only needed a bump or two to level match them. Here is what my levels were on the HK Interesting thing is to get the SPL meter to 85dB, I was at -37 on my receiver. When playing a movie demo, I believe I only got up to around -30dB to be at 95dB. There is no way I could get even close to 0dB as it would likely blow me out of the room. Do you think the HK volume is set to have 0dB at "Reference"?

  42. Probably 80% movies / 20% Music. WakeJunkie revised the sketchup I realize if I go with the DTS10, my false wall will be 4' from the front wall. That's almost 2' deeper than the curent false wall. I thought my screen was 11' from my eyes but I just measured it and it is 10' so that would put the new screen 8'. Not sure I can do that, especially at 150". I might have to consider a much smaller or at least one with a shorter depth than the DTS10.

  45. Most people don't, then when they actually visit they like it so much they move here. Coarse if I did't have kIds I would move to south Texas where it is warmer more through out the year. But I don't have enough clothes to live there, two pairs of jeans and about 30 pair shorts. They would find me frozen somewhere during winter, the news would say another southern found frozen, you would think they would learn ! South Texas get's hotter than we do here, they can be over 100 regularly, were usually just in the 90's with enough humidity to make it hard to breathe sometimes.
