I just finished setting up the HT. Two Cornscalas for fronts, two Cornwalls for sides, and two LaScalas for rears. I still need a sub and a center (currently using a Heresy for center). VanHalen and Blackfoot sound awesome. The room is 14' x 30' with acoustic tiles. I may substitute the Forte II's for rears as the LaScalas seem overpowering.4 points

So it's been a week since "The stacks from hell" have been residing in the cave, two days of listening Nervana, and as the day's fly by, I must admit acquiring more has again crossed my mind, not bigger than these critters, just more of the same. Salesbaron does have at least 6 more sets as of last week and it's not like I don't know how to get there. Just the thought of these fantastic speakers sitting in a lonely dark warehouse is costing me sleep. I could tell the wife there could be a "Rescue Mission" coming up just to test the waters, Ya Think ?3 points

OK, I'm going for best Friday 13th good thing. I walked in Costco just a little while ago and saw that the TV I purchased two weeks ago was $200.00 cheaper! I went to the service desk and mentioned that I just bought the TV and remembered that if I saw it cheaper within a certain time I could ask for the difference? She said sure no problem and credited my CC the $200.00. Now that is a Friday the 13th good thing! Yay Costco!2 points

Any idea exactly what type or brand of foam it was, or where he got it? Sounds like a simple solution...thanks. Ya know id ask him but he's is stationed overseas, i will shoot him an email, have not been in touch with him this year. As I remember he googled the hell out of company's making/selling foam sheets, his main concern was precut, and man, im glad he did that. They look outstanding on the celing, installed the whole celing grid looks to be 1 1/4 spacing between the foam edges.2 points

However you sir have collected the "Living Museum" of the heritage line, PWK would be Proud Maybe, but you have taken the contest to a whole new level with your latest acquisition. Still remaining a faithfull Klipsch owner (The Wife) as for me nothing but bigger/badder/cleaner/chrisper and last but not least, more filling. Let's not forget to throw in the fact, I can no longer lift my speakers, even one of them, @550Lbs per stack, im glad I put wheels on them....... Don't worry, I am here for you.arnold-schwarzenegger.jpg :emotion-21: As usual, wake up and outta likes....P.S. my former Gov is a worthless POS. sided with the Indians and took away my Gold Dredging hobby.2 points

What I got today, my wife was concerned when the UPS driver used a 2 wheeler to deliver it. What a heavy beast. A little fixer upper but as long as the transformer, and autoformers are good, it shouldn't be nothing that can't be fixed. I all so received my Crown D45 I purchased from JWC, I didn't take pics yet but did get it hooked up and it sounds really good.2 points

The wife just came in the man cave as I was looking at this thing, ask me if it was some kind of sex toy. Why yes but it takes a bunch more attachments so I was thinking more about a different models. Proceed after judging the look on her face What was the verdict? Must be good he hasn't answered, we'll take that as a good sign.2 points

Downtown LA, and I mean Downtown, like Burbank/No Hollywood. I picked up a pair of high end speakers there once in my old truck. I remember sitting at an In-and-Out eating and looking around thinking that I had a pair of $11,000 speakers wrapped up in the back of the truck, and some of the people there would probably shoot me for $50. I didn't stick around after I was done eating.1 point

Would have been nice to have some 904s like you do, but I am going to have to settle on the JBLs, and Klipsch speakers I have (much less expensive). i know where a trio of kpt-904 sits for 1800.1 point

You'll love the Seymour 'scope screen. 'Scope is the way to go, IMO, because when filmmakers select 2.35 (or 2.2, 2.55, etc.), they expect the screen area and width to be greater than with standard 1.85 or 1.78 ....1 point

I know what you mean about KISS. Having had 3ways with Daves horns and ALK split crossovers. Then adding stereo subs and not gaining anything but complexity, my old 2way cornscala in a cornwall box is a nice return to basics. (I traded my 3ways for my 2way cornwalls back). I was listening last night to the la sclala... Not my fav sound... I could hear why I let them go before... but the nostalgia aspect brought me back... They are good but not great compared to what the forum has helped to bring about. Then I listened to my Harris build 2way cornscalas... I spent the next 3 hours enjoying a drink and reading the new absolute sound :-). Simple has a charm I love. (Big bad *** projects are cool, but I need a break from building them for me. (As I write this Im reminded of the split cornscala still being built in my garage). Maybe something for winter or 4th of july weekend J.1 point

I can see that an active could add some noise to the system. But I can also see how the passive wastes some of the amps power as heat. I am thinking that is the amps power is delivered to the driver alone and dosen't have to contend with the typical impedence dips that it would be a fair trade off. I would expect a more dynamic sound, and that is one reason that I have been a fan of Klipsch. And I would expect that you could spend more than $80 on the active crossover! Whether your running an AVR or 20K worth of high dollar amps and pre's, your signal will be degraded to some point. Adding electronic filters from an Electronic X-over and what not will never improve your signal. It may be an upgrade in the sound from a totally shot passive you're running, but it will never improve your signal quality. Having said this, this is coming from someone that cant stand Audyssey as well. I can't stand Audyssey either, and I agree with your sentiments about simplifying the signal path. However, I'd ask you to consider what happens to the signal path when you start with a digital source. With a passive xover: CD -> D/A -> Amplifier -> Passive Xover -> Speaker With an active xover: CD -> Digital Xover -> D/A - Amplifier -> Speaker Both stages consist of the CD, D/A, Amplifier, and Speaker - the only difference is a passive xover versus a digital xover. The gain structures are certainly different, so it may be worthwhile to spec different amplifiers so we're not locked into maximizing dynamic range for two different types of signals, but that's just an implementation detail and getting off topic. For someone starting with an analog source, you do add an extra A/D + D/A conversion - and for some that is a non-starter. For those people, just stick to your passive - you're probably part of an older generation that is more forgiving of the artifacts present in all the music you have enjoyed over your entire life, and also less forgiving of these new artifacts that you've never heard before. Just keep in mind that the younger generations grew up learning to ignore digital artifacts and have a hard time tuning out what you grew up with and don't even notice anymore. (Nothing better about either - it's just a cultural phenomenon). Back to the signal path analogy, I would argue that a digital xover is better at the xovery functions: The passive xover presents a frequency specific impedance to voltage divide the signal against the frequency specific impedance of the driver. As the driver moves, the driver impedance changes slightly and that in turn results in the filter changing with signal level and frequency content. The filter itself is also trying to present an accurate impedance to a signal containing a lot of energy - which means there is more stress on the electrical components. There are massive amounts of energy being reacted which cause the electrical properties to change with the signal level. We have two degrees of modulation happening - so a great way to minimize that effect is to minimize the impedance dependency by reducing the slopes (going to a simple first order) - however at the expense of doppler effect which Mark alluded to. The digital xover removes the filter's dependency on the driver impedance, and also removes any modulation of the filter shape itself. You still have the driver non-linearity, but that driver non-linearity actually improves when you improve the electrical damping of the circuit by removing that big impedance in the middle from the passive xover. So technically, we're improving the driver behavior as well. By having a more static system, you can move to higher order filters, and you can even implement filters that can't exist in the analog realm - and it is possible to do it without introducing any of the phase issues that creative (elliptical filter) passive xovers impart. I know all of this just makes the analog purists cringe, but the performance bar of the analog realm is not really moving forward. Anyone seeing any major changes or trends in the analog domain? How old is vinyl again? A lot of this stuff is limited by materials science and just plain old physics. One of the reasons so much of audio is moving into the digital realm is because of the problems that could otherwise never be solved. It's kinda funny for me to say that because in my other circles I'm the jaded old fart fighting for the simple analog solutions. If something has to be digital (for whatever reason), then I'm going to make sure it sounds as analog as possible - and I think some people (if they were open-minded) would be surprised at how well that can be accomplished. I think give it another 15 years and the digital label won't be so repulsive anymore - and mostly because a lot of the digital designs are maturing back into more analog'ish behavior. Btw, how many people here have actually compared the two signal paths presented above? I've only seen a couple people with that digital xover signal path, and they all love their systems. The only complaints I've seen are from people concerned about noise - who I'd argue aren't using the right processor/amplifier combination. Anyways, all that to say - the signal path complexity I'd argue is less with a properly implemented active xover. I hope I wasn't being too long winded and anecdotal.1 point
