  1. Typical Colorado 'spring.' Yesterday was sunny and 60's. Painting the shed in short sleeves under Baxter's close supervision. Today is a nice rain/snow mix. Oh well ... nothing new. Chuck, I am not familiar with insurance rates/requirements in your neck of the woods, but out here our roofs need the ice/snow type of materials. Not sure if that's code or just insurance company requirements. Maybe just something relating to rates. May want to inquire. Roofers should know. I've scuttled my plans to do the finish coat of paint on shed's trim today due to our weather but plan on doing some constructive goofing off. Will report the exciting details later. Cheers guys.

  2. Headed to the 70s here too Joe. Getting estimates to reroof mi casa. First one was right at $10,000 with 15 year stain guarantee on the shingles and using ice damn type product rather than felt. I have gable end vents and he wants to use ride vents as well. He would close in the gable vents. Not sure whether to leave them open or closed. I know the current thought is to balance air intake and exhaust rather than over ventilate. Any roofers out there? Rode 9 miles on the new bike yesterday with little butt soreness! Getting there. LF off to play tennis. Ate lunch at Tilted Kilt yesterday Anyone been to one? Cheers Gents

  4. After a more than 3 year absence of Klipsch speakers in my house I'm very pleased to say that the drought has ended. Last night I gave the finishing touches to a Heresy project that I've been working on for more than a year. I had a pair of cabinets that I don't recall where I got them from. Gradually as budget allowed I picked up the various bits and pieces and last weekend the final parts arrived. Then came the required crossover updates and mods. As I wasn't able to afford the Atlas squawker drivers I opted for the Selenium drivers mated to the K700 horns. This required the use of Mr. Crites tweeters and the -4500 mod to the crossovers. As they are right now they have K22EF woofers, K700 squawker hours with Selenium D250-X drivers, (borrowed) CT125 tweeters, and E2-4500 dividing networks updated with Solen capacitors. So the obvious question is "how do they sound?". Well... They sound a heck of lot how I remember Heresys sounding. That's a good thing. They could stand a bit more bass but that's nothing a decent subwoofer can't fix. As time passes and "extra" $$ dribble in the plan is to change out the woofers to a pair from Mr. Crites and purchase my own pair of of CT125 tweeters. This is what it all currently looks like: Forgive the dust. I'm a single guy and housekeeping is not my thing.

  7. There's a lot of reasons. Headroom is a good thing. The easier a sub works, the less distortion it produces. This sub has to keep up with 2 speakers that are 101dB efficient. He has a very open (lossy) floorplan In order to reproduce HT content that's frequently below 20Hz, you need a powerful sub that won't drop off and keep up with the mains even when playing below 20Hz.

  9. Morning Gang Temps start in the 80s today and they say the next 5 days anyway. Day off today, no driving anywhere, no flying, no classes, no instructors Now if i could just have a Wee Bit of a Libation or four , not a chance, couple more weeks. Today last project on the Water Craft, building the new Plywood housing/covering with Vinyl. Other than cleaning, i think im done, hummm, must really think on that one today. Chuck, id get at least four Bids and pic their Brains as to what kind of air flow is best. 10K for the eastern seaboard does not seem outta line, but hell id get other bids anyway. One of those other bidders may have "Other" interesting ideas. P.S. found a badge for your Rotten Music thread

  10. Hmm, the caps and coils look pretty nice. The resistors look lower end quality though (of course, I could be wrong). Would love to see some Palladium tower XO's, the caaps are probably decent sounding ones but I agree those ceramic resistors are not to write home about. Poor showing as far as I am concerned. Ps: in just seeing the picture above and for balance those inductors do look to be a decent gage but again no letters home but nice you have to keep in mind the sticker price.

  12. Maybe that's part of my question.....is there a preamp that would offer an audible difference in sound quality? If not, there really is no benefit for me "upgrading" to a dedicated preamp. I do like the sound of HK with Klipsch....always have. Guess I was just curious if I can improve the sound even more since I don't need the amplification in the receiver. I do not find any "appeal" to separates. I'm more concerned with how it sounds. With that said, I'm not into vintage gear. Owned an old HK AVR430. Sounded good, just too old for my taste. Yeah, that's probably true. Any models in the < $350 range? Ok I said I didn't care about the look but I REALLY like the clean look of that Rotel.

  22. I'd have a real hard time going back to a TV myself. What I like about them in general... 1. size of course, much harder to get lost in a movie with a TV, plus if you get a big sounding audio system it just sounds awkward with a dinky TV. 2. Details come to life, you notice stuff much more than with a TV. You'll know if your favorite actor has a blackhead problem on his nose for example. Intricate emotions are more obvious. 3. Any screen looks much more badass sitting on the wall than a tv. No matter what size it is, the TV crowd will come in and be like "you have a movie theater??!!?" What I don't like about them... 1. Unless you spend a bunch and have a dark room you may have "less than perfect" black levels. To get great blacks it takes some effort and money. I like mine but I have seen some setups where the best black you can hope for is a dark gray. I like my blacks to look like you spilled ink on the screen and am even critical of mine sometimes. Ambient light in the room can ruin it. 2. There is quite the learning curve. You need to be a tinkerer. There are lots of settings that you'll find the need or at least the desire to play with, it's not totally mindless, can't exactly take it out of the box and it is seemingly perfect like a TV. 3. Some movies really get on my nerves with dark scenes that are just non-stop earth tones, dark shadowy browns and whatnot. I can't seem to find a setting where this kind of material is always totally pleasant. 4. I don't like 16:9 aspect ratio anymore. Works great on a TV but on a projector I feel that it is either too tall if I display it at the same width as 2.35:1, or it is too narrow if I display it at the same neight. 16:9 movies have become a big pet peeve of mine after getting a projector. 2.35:1 is much more pleasant.

  24. Academy center for sure $300.00. RS 3's will work for the surrounds $100.00/175.00 a pair. Should be able to find them. Sub SVS... a lot of sub for the money. Receiver. That is really a matter of taste..... I would probably go with one of the new Pioneer Elites $1100.00/1500.00

  26. My father was coxswain of one of the landing crafts on Utah Beach. I have his diary from the days prior to the landing..he stopped writing a few days before DDay. He never ever spoke of the war although in addition to Utah Beach he landed troops at Iwo Jima as well. The ship he was on, the USS Bayfield, was also at Okinawa but did not land troops there. I visited Normandy with my wife and kids a few years ago. It was quite the experience for sure.

  27. How does stub hub do it then? I have been looking for Dead tickets in Soldier Field July 3, 4, 5th. Take a look at those on Stub Hub.............Buffet is a bargain by comparison I guess. I don't the purchaser ever finds out the identity of the seller. So the seller gets away with it. Stub hub simply gets a "commission" (their fee from the seller) which is not technically selling anything. Everyone is happy I guess until one day.

  28. LOL. no offense intended, but i know some browsers or smart phones can show websites different. you have to pay a couple bucks for a reserve price so im sure its less than the BIN, he started the auction at like $10 so hes just protecting himself from letting them sell for too cheap. i bet the reserve is about $50-100 less than the bin. wht cracks me up is the people that put in a $29 bid. i agree, an epic 5.1 or 7.1 system would be awsome. cf4 fronts, cf3 or 4 surrounds & even a cf-3 on its side for a center. for the prices these epics are going for lately, thats would be a hard system to beat.

  31. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/115376-are-these-horns-from-a-klipsch-speaker/ Klipsch was not happy with the Atlas ceramic magnet version of the two exit port PD5, the ones I saw were marked K51V and wound up in the Cornwall. The EV version had the plastic back chamber, the only Atlas version I saw of this had a metal bumped back chamber that looked like an ash tray glued on the back of the driver. Atlas had a whole skid of these that Klipsch refused to accept. I bought some of these from Atlas as the PDMR. They did not measure as smooth as the EV made K55M in the 4Khz~6Khz region, but they worked great for PA (especially for $24 each). Klipsch was hot to reduce the cost of the midrange driver for the Cornwall and Heresy. The Atlas PD5 not only had an alnico magnet, but also required quite a bit of machine work in the magnet assembly. Hepner had long been providing ceramic magnet midrange and tweeter horns with 1" coils to Cerwin Vega. These had stamped plates in the magnet assembly making them dirt cheap by comparison with the Atlas and EV products. The new 1-1/2" VC midrange/HF driver proved suitable for the Cornwall/Heresy product, but was not deemed 'enough' for the K/B/LS . The stamped magnet assembley tweeters were not efficent enough to keep up with the horn loaded LF of the K/B/LS either, and the EV tweeter was retained. The KG2 was the first Klipsch speaker to use a Hepner tweeter, virtually the same one sold to Cerwin Vega. Ray Hepner died and Klipsch took over the payroll and kept production going. Eventually Klipsch bought the tooling and moved it to Hope.

  34. My tube hybird has SS rear and tube in the front. The Fortes are on that amp and the RF 7 on the Pioneer. The two speakers SQ is so close that it is a toss up if one system is truly better. At our next Chicago land meeting I will see if the guys want to bring different preamps, some high end and some middle of the road and see it we can tell a difference.

  38. I like the flow of this thread, hearing is the most important factor. The preamp has a major impact on the what you hear at the end of the audio chain. I use an Acurus with my avr and prefer it to separates. The avr /amp combo is a good option. Flagship avr's have an economy of scale advantage over smaller companies making separate preamp. A good preamp can cost a few bucks. Also, Flagship avrs may offer many features not available on a lot of preamp. I use my system mostly for music.

  40. going off of audio memory, its easy for me to say i loved my rc-64 until i heard a better center. then after that my rc-64 just seemed a little nasally to me. the kl-650 did not share that attribute at all. to me the kl-650 is a step up if you are a HT guy over music. i know metro prefers the 64 for multichannel music, and if i ever listened to that i probably would have as well. but to me a center is designed for voices. so kl-50 had my vote for home use UNTIL NOW..... this center is a monster in size and sound. it is clear as a whistle and to me easily the best center klipsch makes for home use. one day i will take it down stairs and find a way to try it out against a 904. also have a buddy wanting to take it to his house to try against his legacy silverscreen HD. which until i got this was the best center i have heard that isn't monstrous and hideous to look at. now when i go to his place i think they are about on par with each other but hard to tell until they are actually side by side.

  42. Well, this just sucks....had a doc appt. this am at 9, finished at 10, came out to the car, and had just a very light dusting of snow. Nothing falling then. Temp is about 28. Went home, down to the basement office, back up two hours later, and we now have almost 2 inches on the ground, still coming down, roads are a mess... Wife and I both have to go out later, not looking forward to that. Time for another cup of Monsoon Malabar.

  45. Just for you beeker, I tried it with a bic lighter. It blew it out about a foot from the mouth and it wasn't all the way up. I have the new driver in, up and running. This thing is DEEP and POWERFUL. People throw around superlatives all the time regarding subs so I won't even try. I can however say that is the most powerful single driver sub I've ever built, period. My garage is a terrible place to test cabs as I work in the middle of the floor and it's very open. With the garage doors down, it was shaking everything inside. My daughter came out and said she could feel it in the kitchen (not hear, feel!). We have a slab house and detached garage. At one point I reached in to feel the assembly to make sure nothing was getting warm and it literally hurt my chest. The whole session the amp and driver both ran cool which was awesome. I don't think Ron will ever test it's limits in his house.

  47. Nice. Hey, I had those heart attacks too when I got the new RF7ii. After moving the old ones and placing new ones in place, couldnt figure out why no sound coming from them till I noticed I never plugged the wires into back of speakers. And people say cables dont make a difference??? They do when you dont hook em up! I'll be curious what you think of the Fusion. I have been eyeballing it but decided to go another route.
