  1. Well... they have arrived. The Forte IIIs - first shipment to NZ docked Tuesday night, and the dealer managed to convince the distributor to let me pick up straight from the warehouse on Wednesday. Had to fly out on business that night, so only got a few hours listening in, but back today and halfway through a nice bottle of Australian red while having a good listen. What a massive improvement on the RF 82-IIs I had - immediately noticed much sharper imaging and an absolutely massive soundstage. Vocals are just incredible on these. Currently have them around 40cm/15" out from the rear wall, toed in pointing straight on the listening position. Will play around with placement after a good 50 hours to let the woofers loosen up I think. NZ pricing came in at $7k which is just over $5k USD at current exchange rates.

  6. not much sand here. I have rock. if ya wanna split hairs, I don't live in "the desert". This region is classified as semi-arid grassland. There is prolly as much cacti in Colorado as here.. A few prickly pear and some agave. I cut oak for the fireplace.

  7. So, here's how you calculate this stuff. 30 watts is 14.8 dBW (dB above a watt) https://www.crownaudio.com/en/tools/calculators The speakers are 97 dB at 1 watt at 1 meter. 97 + 14.8 = 111.8 dB, say 112 A second speaker adds twice the sound or +6 dB (playing a mono signal for the pedantic) = 118 dB (at 1 meter) Sound level decreases 6 db for each doubling of distance (outdoors for the pedantic) and 3 meters/10 feet (9.8425197 for the p.......) reduces the sound level by 9.5 dB. http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-distance.htm So your peak capability is 118 - 9.5 = 108.5, say 108 dB WITHOUT clipping (nasty sounding distortion) and at the amp's rated output. I would expect a Marantz to produce a little more than rated power. A symphony *may* hit peaks of 110 dB in the audience and sounds to me like it averages about 80 dB. Live jazz would be a comfortable 75 to 80 db average and 100 db peaks. Rock concerts, ...... well, "blow a 50 amp fuse." All that being proof you have plenty of power for realistic music levels, but if you hear gritty or brittle sounds, turn down the volume quickly; that is the first sign of clipping. Further, 3 db, a barely noticeable change requires twice the amplifier power and a big change, 10 dB, requires 10x the amplifier power. You will have to make a big change in power to get much louder.

  11. Harry Potter 2. The one with the big snake. It made the wife happy. I hate that whole series. I probably would have loved it if I were younger. Now I'm older and meaner and keep praying those annoying kids get eaten in a horrific way.

  14. Not me, but my money's on an "investor". If so, you'll likely have another chance at them soon but probably in the $1200+ range if they are in decent condition. Keep an eye out for them and this time - be MORE ready.

  15. I have to say it like my friend would say, " I've met some odd cat's in Indiana". I once thought some crazy stuff went on here but after reading the news for a few years, I thought Florida passed us up, and Indiana is close behind and catching up. I just threw out California, by now they are expected to be strange, they don't even try to be normal.

  19. Well that would explain why almost everything on TV sucks. No I get if there is extra parts and not just wires that it could be directional but just wires, sounds fishy. I think the active HDMI wires are need for longer runs, if i remember reading correctly. I was quite shocked with the remote that came with the DAC, it's tougher and heaver than all the other remotes I have combined. That's funny

  21. I've used mine with my '76 Heresy, RB-5, KP-2500-C, and La Scala. It's great for temporary setups (like when I was painting the kitchen after we moved and used it with the RB-5s). At the moment, it's in the garage powering the 102db@1w KP-2500-Cs, providing the tunes while I work on vehicles. Nice, clean power in a small and easily moved package. No complaints to report. All the Emotiva stuff I've owned has been very solidly built. Especially the 80 lb beast of an XPA-5. Best bang for the buck out there, IMO.

  22. @Coytee Richard. I stopped by and loaded up all your extra speakers while you were away... Your wife told me to take as many as I wanted.. Your room looked too nice with the Jubilees so I left them behind. I was gonna play with the stereo, but I would hate for something to go wrong. I ran into your brother in-law while I was there and your wife showed my wife some of the tasteful speaker camouflage. Nice job hiding the sub and LaScalla's.My wife told me to take some notes! Thanks again they are going to a good home where they will be loved

  28. Just a smaller scale diversion in comparison to the truck loads that leave northern Illinois headed south bound. Bottled water does have its use, but way too many now rely on it as a convenience factor. Filling a container from the household faucet, at pennies per gallon, is much more "cents-able"

  30. It is torture, but it's what DAD's do, glad she had fun. Reminds me of when ours were little, dance reviews should require the parents to me medicated. Reminds me of what Abraham Lincoln said....." If my wife drags me to the theater one more time, I hope someone shoots me in the head !" i know that's terrible

  31. Damn sure wouldn't let the $250 keep me from buying these. Pay the man what he wants and sell the tubes yourself. It aint hard. There is no way in hell I would let mine go for $4K In my system, this upgrade was not subtle, and all was better in the important ways. Sound of the instruments, image focus, scale, speed, slam, all much better with the HR VRD's. More transparent. They don't miss anything and somehow manage to keep it all sweet sounding at the same time. No aggressive edge to them at all, and beautifully balanced.

  34. Why is the center conductor a twisted pair? Cuz you have to cancel out the inter capacitance of the two halves of itself. Come on everybody knows that. And if you hook it up backwrds? My goodness can you say mucho Henries of inductance?
