  3. Besides, all this "HiFi" and "Imaging" BS is just a grand ILLUSION...................go hear a live acoustic concert in a living room or small venue and you will go home and throw ROCKS at whatever system you own. 3D indeed!! Even PWK, who was a Symphony Fanatic (he played his recordings for me at his home and they were excellent), said that the best you can do is come as close as you can to a live performance. Grand Illusions indeed!

  4. I have recently invested in some used Carver Amazing Platinums and AL-III's. Both are Ribbon Dipole designs. Ever since I experienced an Open Baffle speaker, about 5 years ago at a friends house, I was simply BLOWN AWAY by the 3 Dimensionality of Dipole speakers. Read up on Linkwitz Labs for 4-way dynamic speaker kits and all the TECH stuff you can handle. In my case, it's only 2-way. Either Open Baffle from 18-120 Hz. to a 60 inch ribbon, or Bass Reflex from 24-150 Hz. to a 45 inch ribbon. They are extremely placement dependent (plus I PEQ them with Yamaha digital stuff). But boy the DEPTH is nothing short of incredible. Now at 87 db/1 watt input, they need 20-40 times more power than my horns. BUT, since I only listen to about 80-86 db at my sweet spot, this is not a problem with modern solid state amplifiers. Don't get me wrong, NOTHING beats horns for loud DYNAMICS, but these Carvers, at NORMAL listening levels give you a 3 D depth that no horn system can touch. For me, it's NOT one or the other, it's BOTH!!

  5. Good morning, Shocked to find not enough coffee already ground to make a full pot. Rather than awaken the non-early risers, I made only 2 cups. The Bunn carafe is graduated in 2 cup intervals from 4 - 10, but I need only 2. Don’t tell those without potable water, but I filled it to 6, poured it in until down to 4, then dumped the rest. OBTW, what Bunn calls 2 cups did not fill my mugs, ceramic or flesh & blood.

  7. I just re-read Chad's comment. I saw the truth but not the humor. I'm afraid you have opened a thread for all the political trolls to have their "one last thing..." comment like they always do when they shut down a thread due to political comments. Let's see if the trolls react. The smart money says they do.

  8. I think everyone loves low distortion whether they realize it or not. They may not be aware of what they are appreciating. If I invite people to my house and we are hanging out in the cave, there is no appreciation for 3d sound, imaging, sound stage, or vocals in the middle of the room. They have more interest in the furniture and walls vibrating, clarity, details, dynamics, and maybe stereo separation. If I'm on my own, fire up the tube CD player, tube preamp and tube amps...and move the Cornscalas out about 3 feet from wall and about 10-15 feet apart........break out the wiskey or scotch....then there is a different kind of appreciation goin' on.

  9. This talk of dreams reminds me of the time I was lunching with a group of attorneys from the prosecutor’s office. One of the women commented that she dreamt she was in labor the night before. To which I replied, “That’s funny, I dreamt I was in management.”

  13. isn't ice cold? I'll give it a miss. Ever try lawn bowls? Very similar. Except, the "target" can be moved. The balls aren't completely spherical. They have a flat spot that allows you to curve the throw. I tried it while in Australia. It's kinda a game for the more sedate/older crowd. Having to give this fishing thing a try, again, today. Was all set yesterday, but for the lack of one item, and me not wanting to improvise. A stringer. I have/had 4 or 5. Ya think I could find one? Took all day, and like most things around here ... By the time I find what I know I have, it would have been more cost effective to buy a new whatever "it" is ... wife has this habit of deciding where things go ... even if she doesn't know what it is. And then its place moves periodically w/o notice

  14. A friend and client is a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He has enjoyed his original Ohm Walsh speakers for decades. Unfortunately, I’ve not really had much chance to hear them put through their paces. Coincidentally, he lives across the street from Seaholm High School, where La Scalas I rescued from an Ohio bar serve the band with loud and clear music. OBTW, is it just me, or does “imaging” in the thread title look like it’s spelled wrong? It isn’t, but it just looks wrong to me.

  15. Have heard countless speakers over my life and have owned a couple nice pairs. When it comes to imaging , soundstage and disappearing into the room, nothing I have ever heard comes close the the effortless the way my Ohm Accoustics Walsh Tall 2000s do so. Period. Soundstage, realism and time alignment are the fundamental goals of this design, much the way efficiency , clarity and high DB from minimal watts are the focus and goal of Klipsch designs. There is not so much a sweet spot as a very wide sweet area where everything comes together in a very natural sounding way. That this seems to extend quite far off axis is an added bonus. Not for everyone, that’s for sure, but with my tastes and in my particular room they are spectacular.

  17. Interesting discussion. I just bought Cornwalls (mostly on reputation) and the thing I was most surprised about is that I don't care about the imaging that much- they are used in my living room which opens to the kitchen/dining and are in a very compromised placement. But they sound fantastic as long as I just enjoy the music, instead of sitting in the sweetspot (such as it is) and focusing on imaging. Which is usually a hugely important thing to me. But I have multiple listening spaces and lots of different speakers/systems (I'm a recording engineer) and I just realized if I want holographic reproduction I'll go downstairs to the studio. The Cornwalls bring so much to the table that outweighs pinpoint imaging in my case. All that being said- they image ok. It's not like you don't get a center image of the kick/snare or singer when they're panned dead center. Also, as others have said, the room and placement/treatment are pretty important if imaging is important to you.

  18. I wouldn't pay $5500 for that pair in Dallas plus the shipping charges. You're paying a premium for a re-veneer job that's been done on them. And even then, the veneer doesn't really match in the main key point on the speakers....the bass bin center pieces. The tops don't match either. Look at most any veneered Klipsch speakers in a matched pair and they will match pretty much all the way around on both. For that money, you aren't far off from fairly new Klipshorns or La Scala II's...which you said you didn't want. I guess this is the main reason I built a pair of Belle's from scratch; I refused to pay what they are wanting for them. No, mine aren't authentic...but they are hard to beat. I wanted the look and sound without the cost and then "upgrade" costs of drivers, etc.

  19. so, i forgot to remove the tag off a new pair of jeans that i bought a couple of weeks ago. I’ve dropped from a 36 waist to 34, so i’m gradually getting ones that fit better. Today, i go into the same store wearing the pants that i previously bought (still with the store tag on them) and go in and buy two more pair. My brother is with me and he’s checking out at another register. I’ve already paid and am waiting for him at the register that he is at. The clerk that rang me up and calling for her manager and telling her to “hurry.” Seems that she sees the tag on my jeans and must have thought that i was stealing them. The manager says to me, “is there a tag on your pants?” Confused, i say, “what?" My brother then says “Yes” and rips the tag off and shows me. The manager says “did you already pay for them?” I say yes and she said “It’s always a good idea to remove the tags." Can’t believe how close i came to being accused of shoplifting. Although, I found the receipt in my car from the last trip; and i’ll bet, with today’s technology, they can probably tell that the tag on those pants had already been scanned at the register, which would coincide with the date on the receipt in my car. I sure do need to pay attention. when i put on those new pants, i was too preoccupied with finding a pair of 34 waist pants in my wardrobe. When i saw a pair of 34, i just put them on without noticing that they had never been worn and still had the store tag on it. the headache that this could have caused! I can’t blame the checkout girl for calling her manager; but, why would i steal a pair of pants and pay for two at the same time? Surely, the security footage will show that i entered the store fully clothed and didn’t even enter a dressing room (thank God that i never try on clothes at the store). Also, i don’t steal and if I did, i surely wouldn’t stand around the store waiting for others to finish checking out.

  22. Easy to do with a set of small monitors on good stands, and pulled away from the corners and walls. Use a sub or two to fill in the bottom. I use Klipsch because I like the dynamics/realism. The more real is sounds, the less I care about imaging. However, I have a very good phantom center with the LaScalas, though it does lack depth of field at low volumes -- easily overcome with a little more volume.

  24. I'm glad to hear that. Most of us here are so wary of scams speaking for myself when I see an unrealistically high price from someone who is unyielding on the price I don't have much patience for that kind of Seller. I'm glad you pursued the sale and was able to get an apparently nice man a reasonable price for his speakers, and you got what you were looking for. Win-win.

  26. The first three numbers are the day of the year, the second two numbers is the year in reverse. It says 79 which means 1997. This doesn't translate to every klipsch serial number, but it does for this style.

  27. A few days ago I enjoyed the Forte III at Stereofil in Oslo. They were fed from this tiny little Luxman SQ-N10: http://www.luxman.com/product.php?pid=49 A pretty cheap(for a Luxman) integrated tube amp with EL84. China built. I think it was a wonderful combination. Played 10-15 songs from a Tidal playlist with old and new favorites - and got blown away! Then I ordered a pair of FIII in walnut. My first post btw, but a long time reader.

  28. One of my earliest ambitions in life was to be a groupie for Judy Collins. To me, she always seemed to embody the finest qualities of a human being........so she's my legend. Saw a couple of her concerts at Red Rocks back in the 70s but couldn't sneak onto the tour bus. Finally got to meet her after a Valentines Day concert here a couple of years ago. Still amazing at 70+ and her voice was as beautiful as ever (if not better.) I know I look like a dork in the photo, especially standing next to a goddess. Beautiful woman and still very amazing eyes but I especially love her hands in this photo. On a related note, we got to see Crosby, Stills and Nash several years ago too. Video worth watching.

  33. Just remember that between original purchase price of $400.00 picked up from CL in Atlanta and the cost of veneer (purchased) / labor (contracted) plus modification with 2" wooden horns, BMS drivers, tweeters and another member's crossovers I still lost about 1.5 to 2K in the sale. Shhh, don't tell the wife.

  34. Ask the designer - I’m just the builder. I did tack on the tweeter section from the Universal, so that part is 18dB/octave.

  35. ^ I wouldn't pay more than 2000 to maybe 2200 for a pair of factory finished Belles with cane grills... LESS than that for black or brown grills. I'd MUCH RATHER own la scalas because they are a better speaker imho... certainly the Klipschorn is. Belles are a nice oddity and specialty item with an ode to a lovely wife, but it's not in the same league as the LS or K'horn.

  37. Some of the BEST imaging I have ever hear was from Jazz and Classical recordings made in the late 50s, and early 60s. It is just that rock music in general and British rock music in particular was such that the engineers, producers etc, really did not have a handle on what stereo was all about. They treated it like a special effect rather than a tool to convey space and natural ambience in 3 dimensions. Ella Fitzgerald was mentioned. Listen to 'Round Midnight off her Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie CD on the Verve/Polygram Classic CD.

  40. Have to disagree .. obviously you've never experienced what I'm explaining ... I've got 10's of thousands of FLAC files and run what is arguably the finest Bryston digital player on the market , top of the line VPI table and a HDCD worth more than my pickup truck ... It's not source dependent .... It's a combination of room treatments , speakers and amps . Tonight I was at my best friends place , his room is full of treatments .. his gear is top of the line krell mono blocks feeding a pair of Focals worth about as much as I paid for my first house 20 years ago ... The music was right there in my face ... I could see the towers standing in the corners yet I couldn't hear the music coming from them .. it was being projected directly in front of me ... absolutely an amazing listening experience . nothing I've ever came close to in the past 30 years of being faithful to k-horns , belles . lascala's , cornwalls and or hersey's . I'm not slamming any klipsch gear .. I've owned everything klipsch has even made ... just never reached this level of amazing before
