  3. I'm in the middle of another RF-5 mod so figured I'd start a thread and detail my steps move by move in case someone else wanted to do something similar, I've done something like this in the past with great results but ended up passing those speakers on to @vasubandu for his theater system. With those RF-5's I simply swapped out the complete horn / drivers and crossovers from a pair of RC-7's and installed them into the RF-5's, worked like a charm and was a nice step up from stock for both speakers depending on how you look at it. For the RF-5's it gave them a larger, slightly deeper tone that is very clean sounding, for the RC-7's it extended to lower end a bit and gave them a little more open sound. The difference between the modded RF-5's and running dual RC-7's was actually a smaller incremental change than the other way around. For my next project I'm still installing the RC-7 horn driver combo into the RF-5's but this time I'm building completely new, custom crossovers for this set blending the schematics from three different crossover networks. Basically what I'm doing is building the top end crossover for the horn for the RC-7, nothing is being changed there expect the quality of parts. For the bottom end I'm going build the RF-5 woofer section except with the inductor rating for the RF-3 for a lower crossover point. The stock RF-5 has a crossover point at 2500hz, the RC-7 horn (2.5 way crossover) crosses over at 1950hz and the RF-3 crosses over at 1975hz so basically my plan is to have the crossover point somewhere around 2000hz, which is 200hz lower than the RF-7. Right now I've already installed the horn driver into the RF-5's and I just bolted the top end of a stock RC-7 crossover to my stock RF-5 crossovers so there is a 500hz overlap but it sounds just fine to me, don't think anyone would be able to tell anything was wrong listening to them as there are right now. The RF-5 crossover while bi-ampable is on a single board where the RC-7 is on two stacked boards. I just stacked the top end over the single board and wired it appropriately. Right now I'm in a holding pattern waiting for parts to arrive in the mail I went with Dayton and Solen caps, mills resistors and ESRE inductors. I'll post additional pictures as soon as parts arrive. As always I'm open to questions, comments or suggestions, this is my first crossover build from scratch, going to run with the parts I have ordered for now but may swap parts in the future or build a second set for comparison purposes.

  5. Ok, all outta likes so consider yourselves "liked!" lol Wasted day here waiting on the snow to quit so just hanging out. Couple places I rarely go are Veojam and Discogs so took a peek in both. Funny that Discogs showed a price of $1100 for Floyd's "Saucer full" LP on the Columbia label. Thought a minute and "thought" I had one so decided to check it out... Hmmm... Yea, ok... Just one on Columbia. hahahaha

  9. Ah, this a temporary setup. We’re selling this house and moving to North Carolina very soon. I just had to hear the Khorns sing in this room before that happens. Part of the reason for the integration is I moved my Heresy 3's to North Carolina over the holidays. Just couldn’t be without Heritage sound while we sell this place. And yes, the Khorns are heading south when the time comes. My wife just told me she’s flying through Brisbane during her upcoming vacation. She does a trip every year with her sister. Late February this year. Almost three weeks of Australia and New Zealand. I’m happy for the chance to play the Khorns non stop. Cincy

  10. After a long time having a vinyl system with La Scalas and recently Heresy IIIs I decide to integrate the vinyl system with my Khorns. So, after about 4 hours of work I did. The Khorns sound very nice, Decware Rachel, CJ pv10 pre, and Thorens TD160 super. Eva has never been so sublime. The room The Music Cincy

  13. And here I was expecting you to say that you sold them and bought RF-7s instead! ☺ That's really cool. I wish I had enough extra speakers here to experiment like that.

  14. Dude!. They were here, we had a heavy microdot contingent in this berg years ago! Ritchie or Ronnie too. Not to mention that Ozzy was a stone (d)? Rock God when they played the old coliseum in the 70s. He did sweet leaf and dedicated it to ( we firmly believed) the blond lebenese we were smoking next to the stage once.... well 9 out of 10 there that night were getting high it was `78. They did not require stage smoke for the lights. He stopped mid sentence, the band stopped then they started "Sweet Leaf"

  18. Agree completely with the first part. Whether it is ultimately worth it is up to each individual. While in college, I worked at Williams Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, BMW & Subaru. The maintenance costs for BMWs and Porsche’s can be excessive. My, single at the time, sister drove a BMW Bavaria. It’s triple carbs were a constant headache. After replacing several “cheap” but expensive washer pumps, I persuaded her to replace the Bavaria with a Scirocco; much more reliable and reasonable to repair. Porsches are also expensive to own. Customers would ask if a used 911 for $X is a good deal. My standard reply was only if your budget is at least $1.5X, if not $2X. You don’t own used Porsches (or BMWs), you subscribe to them.

  21. to the OP just in case you were not aware the Chorus was the Klipsch replacement for the Cornwall ll and then the Chorus ll was the next upgrade with a much better and larger hybrid Tractrix mid horn. The Chorus has a higher power handling cast basket pro woofer as opposed to the K33 used in the Cornwall LaScala and Khorn. If you want to use a small set amp the CW is the way to go but if you are prepared to use more power the Chorus is the better option.

  22. I am really glad to see this, it really is a great design that sounds amazing. I am happy every time I hear it, it has detail and a tone better than any sub I have ever heard and no matter how hard you push it the sound never sounds strained or like it's being pushed. Being a horn it matches perfectly with Jubs, MWM's or any folded horn I would imagine, a perfect match. Chief Bonehead really did a great job designing it, I don't rattle the house very often, which it will do for sure. But it has a really nice sound when playing like we normally listen, at low or moderate volumes, great tone, like with a upright bass, every different sound is noticeable, very musical. IMO Congratulations That is one cool system you put together, be careful with movies, the bass can be scary and very deep. I have to admit I have seen a red light flicker on the bridged Crown 1002 before which is 1400 w @ 4ohms, movie bass is addicting.

  26. kink56: I suppose it’s always a question of trade offs with speakers. I’ll take a fully horn loaded speaker every time over one with even one DR in it. Much like yourself, I also can’t understand how anyone would feel differently. For me, the trade offs required with having a DR and a large passive radiator mixed in with two horns outweigh any resonance issues that I perceive with my set up.

  40. I will say this, regardless of which you go with they are going to be tremendous improvement in that room over the L100. My biggest reccomendation would be to upgrade to Klipschorns or Jubilees as soon as you can. You have a room that will just LOVE Khorns!

  41. Awesome donation to the Museum JC. I heard one of the "makers" of that system @Chief bonehead was conferring with another maker, Curator Jim Hunter, to figure out how to fly them 30' in the air at the Museum Steam Generating Plant Building located at the Hope Airport. A lot more information and photos to follow, just wanted to thank JC in his own thread without mucking it up too much. Travis

  42. I saw those listed up here a few weeks ago! Had me thinking too... Like most of us on here, we aren’t afraid of a screwdriver and THEN we are inspired! And like most of us here, we are on converging paths. Horns, folded horns, and bigger horns! There is nothing like a LaScala. The period in that sentence should resonate. For posterity, I had ‘92 LaScalas with the AL-3 crossovers. Loved ‘em! So much so that I never even installed the A/4500 CT-125’s I bought on a whim because “the price was right”. Could not imagine them sounding any better. I now own ‘86 LSI Splits. Only sold the ‘92 LaScalas because I found these, as a project, LOL! They came with the AL crossovers and K-43 woofers. At the moderate to spirited un-processed volumes I enjoy, awful would be the best way to describe them. I have been fortunate enough to stumble across some great and timely finds on THIS forum and CAM (can I say that here?) Anyway, I replaced the AL’s with the AA’s from another forum member AND the K-43’s with K-33’s and, as George Costanza says: “I’m back in business baby!” I would be hard pressed to tell the difference between AA’s and AL3’s at less than concert levels. The horns are a different story though. The K-401 is the more desirable, but it was no where near as drastic, to me, as others have concluded. The K-401 just sounds “lower” to me... You will not go wrong with a pair of AA’s which come up frequently on here. (Except for the USD exchange, lol) My reasoning for the switch was mobility. I wanted to be able to share the “LaScala experience” with friends, at their homes. A pristine pair of LaScalas isn’t condusive to that. A “well enjoyed” two piece speaker with handles, sweet... *** As referred to in the previous post above, I wound up using a razor blade to cut out the overlap on the stock K-400 horn gaskets. O-ring is a great idea though! @HPower For the record, I have a pair of (actually TWO pairs, don’t ask... lol) A/4500 CT-125’s you may borrow at your convenience to see what it’s all about and draw your own conclusions, in your own listening environment. Don’t be shy man! Tiz, if you are reading this, you are still good to go also. Like I said, the way it has unfolded, I have two pairs... sigh. Too many (or just enough, depending on how you look at it) projects lying in wait. Right now I am listening to some Santana on my crude FH-1/ Kappa 15C/K-510/ Faital Pro HF200 setup. Just got a new pair of Crites passives made specificlly for the Faitals (from another great forum member here!) to replace the CS-500’s I was using. Loving the un-EQ’d highs, every now and then I can hear the noise floor - read: CLARITY! Please keep us posted on both of your projects!

  44. Received another speaker from Klipsch today, a 1502, that I needed to complete my Jubilees. I had already started to open it before I remembered to take some pictures. The shipper R&L Trucking was awesome and put it in my carport. After the packaging was removed and I walked around it and that smile formed which has not gone away yet. The music room remains a mess but most of it is back together. I have reconfigured the Xilica as per @Chief bonehead and am working on gain structure. My first impression is Wow there is music in that bottom octave and it is good. Some of the bass is very nuanced and some is punchy fast while being very clean and having correct tone. I'm using a Crown amp rated at 1500 watts at 4 Ohms bridged. I agree with @dtel that the china cabinet needs to be watched as I have already been reprimanded by my wife. Works like that vibrating football game we had as kids. The first music played was Gotthard's Domino Effect CD. I want to thank @MetropolisLakeOutfitters for putting up with me asking for one of these every couple of weeks and then actually getting one for me. I recommend them highly.

  45. I have a friend in TN who uses cbd oil. He has used less over the years and had less pain for his condition. Joe... best of luck to you. I'm approaching 70 and have joint pain. A few years ago started taking glucosamine. It's like taking vitamins... can't really tell I'm taking it but if I stop for a few days there is more pain. I use turmeric in lots of my food (the active ingredient- curcumin, would be better but the cost would go up). We get the turmeric at an Indian grocery. Plus lots of fruits and veggies. Cheaper there than the regular chain groceries. Also take fish oil, even though we consume a fair mount of ocean fish. Doesn't answer the addiction question but may be a piece of the puzzle to help manage the different kinds of pain you may have. Bruce
