  1. I'd at least sneak a peek at the caps to ascertain their age, right off the bat.

  5. Haha ... good luck! I will congratulate you AFTER you get them home FYI, most people will recommend a capacitor overhaul. But ... did it on mine (actually, got new boards from Bob Crites), but could NOT hear a difference. Cheers, Emile Add-on ... Actually liked my Forte's also ... but, was trying to use them as a bass bin with a K-510 horn ... did not work

  12. Yes regardless of opinions, some use the tape loop everyday. Same with pre-out using Rca Y's cables.even the headphone jack or jacks. Seems only limited by the electronic devices features... not always plug and play, not always ideal...

  13. Saw George last night! You guys were right, he still puts on a good show. Rocked hard from start to finish. He's getting old but so am I! I was happy to get home and in bed by 10:00!

  15. You can't rely on a 3.2L Taurus motor to drive you across country, race it, then have it bring you back. :p

  16. Why not leave the guy alone. He is making a considerable investment. You guys have mentioned that his expectations may be unreasonable, but you can't fault someone for shopping for the best price. Asking for info on this forum is entirely appropriate. If, as you claim, it is not possible to get a better price, then he will soon figure it out and the expectations will correct themselves.

  17. I house share my place with a 60 year old female though I never stay there. She complained about the critters so I had an exterminator come over and spray inside and out but due to poor communications he did not bring "bombs" for the attics. She called this afternoon freaked out. Apparently the roaches are now looking for safe ground and one hid in her bath towel. She took it off the rack and it flew at her. She was out of control for a bit but when I suggested she find a bug free environment she calmed down. She will be away for four days in August and I will bomb the ship out of the attic space. I hate them too.

  19. That's a nice ratio, 1-10. Around here most of the public schools would be around 1-20. My wife works at a private school, currently she has 15, she might pick up 1 or 2 more. She has a part time assistant, for any class over 12. My daughter starts college in 3 weeks, nursing student. My wife gets a discount on my daughter's college tuition, almost 50% off, about 22k.....made my day!

  20. I recently purchased Klipschorn number 175. Upon closer inspection I discovered that every part of the speaker is numbered 174. Jim helped me out and let me know that 174 and 175 were produced at the same time. So it looks like I have number 174 but it was labeled 175. Upon even closer inspection I found the signature in the attached image. Can anyone tell me who that signature belongs to. I also included other interesting photos. I've tried for over an hour to upload the pics to no avail. Guess I'll never know...lol

  21. Most units down here have an electric heat grid in the inside units. Some are heat pumps. We don't use them very often and yes, the heater was included.

  22. WOW - apparently its a sensitive topic for some. Thanks to those that have reached out on here. I do appreciate your feedback and information / tips you have provided. As for the others, I don't really care, I'm not an easily offended person. I think sometimes people like to give the new guy a hard time, I'll take my licks and get back up, not to worry. I have always worked hard for my money. I try to be smart with it, that includes looking for the best price and the deal. Thats how you keep your money and or buy more nice stuff glad to hear there are other just like me, and for a fact have never paid retail. gives me hope. So here is what I got so far - tell me what you think : --Brand new La Scala AL5 - have to be ordered from factory - so a few weeks out ($9500) this does not include shipping which, worse case add 500 --The B stock AL5 - $7500 - so far have only seen the natural cherry - and that is a little light for my house ( I imagine if I look further I could find others) --New La Scala II - about 7K-8K delivered (getting) harder to find --La Scala II - demo- at a dealer- on the floor - about 6mo old - perfect condition - delivered 4500K The last one seems like a hard deal to pass up - any reason NOT to buy a nice pair of demos? (Question to "dwilawyer" - you stated the AL5 are your choice because of the new horn / tweeter - its it $5,000 dollars better? and if so - any idea if someone can purchase those and put in a La Scala II - I mean there sure are a lot of folks on here that do upgrades and modification to their older speakers.)

  24. Two HVAC contractors did Manual J calculations at LF's place and gave prices of $8,000 and $10,000. Both quoted a 16 seer 3.0 ton heat pump with AC. The more expensive company advertises a lot more, even on the back of buses, and has a lot more employees and overhead. It's a Trane with a rather smart thermostat ($700). Can't spend a lot of time wringing your hands about money in this heat.

  26. That's why I'm so ready to get a sub going with my Belle clones. I miss the low end that a lot of the music I listen to has in it and currently not even listening to them. I hooked up a pair of Cerwin Vega VS-150's I bought last year and they have been doing the job. They seem to be less forgiving with various recordings, especially where LF is concerned. Just need that for Belle's and should be good to go. I've got a Sunfire sub I may use for awhile (I was Sunfire rep a decade ago) after I replace a few of the power supply caps on the amp. It may not be a horn sub but even it should help some.

  27. Well you know how it is Claude it was the smallest wattage they had for that line. Fall will be here sooner than you think and I am going to point the big boys out at the roll up door. I will call you and let you know when so you can step outside and hear them.

  28. ^^^^^ === Yes. I once heard one of the local guessers’ define what the percentage forecast meant. A 30% chance means that in a viewing area of say 150 mile radius 30% of that audience will see some kind of falling liquid. So yeah, when I actually see it raining as it is now, then yes, it’s raining 🌧

  29. This will also help the time alignment disparity between the tweeter and midrange due to having a flat baffle.

  30. if you are looking for true linear travel and low distortion listen to a set of LaScala they have significantly higher sensitivity as such their diaphragm motion is dramatically shorter travel which results in lower distortion. Once you have experienced high efficiency it is very hard to go back to low efficiency models. Caveat: don't do this unless you have the room and the money to go there as you may find yourself spoiled for lesser loudspeakers.

  31. It's always nice when the parents show their appreciation to the teachers. I will say that it's becoming less popular these days. Most parents show some interest. My oldest daughter was in the guard in high school. She had some 12 hour days, and yes, it's on the asphalt. I was amazed how tough those kids were. I thought the football players were the only kids getting beat up and bruised. A bag of granola bars and boxes of Gatorade is a life saver to them.

  32. Outside of the driver? The phase plug is inside the driver that point is in the middle of the throat of the horn. Why don't you find a pair of these to listen to and see if you like what you hear. What are the specific concerns that you have about these drivers anyway?

  33. My wife is a teacher and she has spent the last two weeks getting her room in order. She loves her job, teaches 4-5 year olds. I try not to complain about all she spends on the kids from her own pocket, it makes her happy. It is cool when a parent of an older kid says you have been our kids favorite teacher!

  34. we have grand/s. I try to keep things on the safer side. We have enough fun stuff, black widows, scorpions, centipedes, rattlesnakes and don't forget that all vegetation has its protective measures. If it doesn't have thorns, it's most likely poison. Wife's first day back. Told me to wake her at 6. She wanted to be there before 7.... Yeah, right 6AM... "Honey, it's 6" then "Honey, it's 6:30" same at 7 She crawled out at 7 o'clock plus. Coffee was cold by then Good thing, all she is doing is getting ready for the kids to come Friday. Sposed to rain. Gave a flash flood watch last night, for today. And then, it is sposed to be wet again tomorrow. 70%. I bet that if it does rain, it will be drizzle. If we get too much humidity/clouds, we don't get the heating/ lift to make storms...

  35. By all means, find a deal and post it here, we'll make them famous. Basically if we get caught discounting them we lose the ability to sell that speaker. Get caught twice and we lose the whole line. Dealers can't even buy them anymore unless they're a certified Heritage dealer yet normal dealers are still openly quoting them at a discount, I've seen it myself. I'm sure you'll find somebody else who can't read eventually. AL5's were actually $10,000 full retail earlier this year, there may be a clause or grace period for ones that were bought to stock before they went to 12. Otherwise you shouldn't be seeing this.

  36. K1 and K2 because of NO FANS. That's for SUBWOOFERS, otherwise my fave is the Hypex NC-400 for neutrality. I sound like class A below 1 watt, and has power to spare for the next 399, so it's a worry free situation when I play as "stupid loud as real drums in my living room" for demos. Plus I never turn them off, only the Pre Pro gets turned off, since the quiescent state is the same as a wall wart, AND it's always ready to go without warmup. For center and surrounds, I like the Ice Power amps, and the chip amps from Texas Instruments. Even my Pro/Super Heresy surrounds come it at approx. 100 db/Watt, to match the MEH horns at 100-103 db/W, so who needs more than a few watts per channel during even at 80-85 db average loud (as opposed to ear splitting/stupid loud). Even now I'm using a lower power amp (with LED power meters) than the Crown K2's on my subs because they have meters and it's rare that even the Tapped Horn Subs, which are 95-100 db/Watt, see more than 10 Watts per channel.

  39. sure looks like a compression driver to me. If you want high tech for cheap look at a Peavey 22R they beat Altec to the punch with that one in the early 1970's it has a deep drawn aluminum one piece former diaphragm and a half round Mylar suspension (long travel high damping). Want a higher quality version of that driver look at the EV DH1506 which is a serious driver by today's standards. Either driver mentioned make the Klipsch model seen here look like a toy.

  40. Perhaps the compression ratio is smaller than used to in other drivers, so appears to not be one. The suspension is talked about in numerous tweeters, such as the old Altec and JBLs. Didn't have anything to do with them being compression drivers or not.
