  2. I have a co-worker who is from Russia, who every few days goes to a nearby recycling drop off facility. Since we work in IT, he's always looking at computers. This past week he came back with a couple of Dell rack mount servers, out of warranty, of course but mint condition. Lots of memory, quad xeon CPUs. Today he comes back with some Polk RT55i and a Nakamichi receiver. Looks to be in perfect shape... not a high end receiver, an RE10, but still.

  3. I stayed home sick from work today - the shifting seasons of N. Texas always wreak havoc on my allergies and the last 10 days have been no exception. The family has also been conveniently gone all day with their normal routine. So that's left me with an inordinate amount of... alone time. So I fired up NPR Tiny Desk concerts on youtube via my main system. I've known about this channel for quite some time, but never given it much thought as a source for serious music listening. It's always been a novelty in my mind, somthing I play randomly at work as I come across recommendations. Youtube at large has fallen prey to that assumption - that of poorly recorded phone "demos" and home videos. So I decided to try some channels, and wow! There are quite a few channels with really well recorded live music and fresh artists! Here's a few I've been running through.. NPR Tiny Desk Concerts OurVinyl The Wild Honey Pie Audiotree KEXP Bookmarked (based on recommendations around the web), but not yet listened to: Out of Town Films WBGO Jazz Night in America Sofar Sounds Pitchfork Live La Blogotheque Just goes to show that even when one feels fairly firm on the edge of modern trends there's still little pockets of experience to new knowledge to be had.

  7. Gonna post this just cause! Wanna talk about getting hit in the FEELS? Why? Slipped into the Naval Air Station @ VA Beach while on a lousy rainy family vaca and checked in at the gate like a good boy. Kid on the Desk went back and got some dude who musta known something I didn't. Wrote up a VIP windshield placard for the Explorer. First stop naturally the hanger where some kid was on guard duty who naturally I joked with a bit cause he saluted me. Ha! Pfffft. Couple minutes later some STUD walked outta the hanger and crawled into his ride. Then he taxi's down the runway and takes off and goes nose up in front of us. STRAIGHT the F up! I was amazed so end of show right? Nah, he'd come back by I thought. Sure enough about 3 minutes later he does a fly by with a couple rolls and outta sight never to be seen again. Talk about dazed and confused??? Totally! ALL those guys can "get it" ANY day in my book! TOTALLY IMPRESSED!

  8. He is an interesting guy. He came over here with a degree that no one would accept. Worked cleaning floors at gas stations/convenience stores, driving across Tennessee, all night. He listened to movies/radio, whatever, to learn English. Went back to school and got a degree in computer science. He really pretty nice, sound just like Dru from the minions movies, but sometimes he is gruff and rude. I guess, like a lot of people from here.

  10. Moztly the one place. The city has about ten locations, and they a staffed by individual from our organization. We support folks with intellectual and developmental disabilities, school age and up. We have over 60 residential houses. So the one spot is only five minutes from our main facility/campus. He's usually dropping off our old and broken computer gear, so he just always looks to see what is there.

  11. I had the same thing happen maybe 10 years ago. Got a call from CC Company asking if I was in a motel in Memphis buying songs from the iTunes store. Nope. They asked me to read and sign an affidavit that the listed charges were not made by me. It was very easy. They sent me new cards right away.

  27. Just attach speakers and weld away. This is one badass amp IMHO. The power supply is ridiculous. Two giant transformers inside, 8 giant caps. Basically looks like a dual mono amp that has a shared power cord. Go big or go home.

  33. Eight Days a Week? That album? Good God man I'd have to be a Beatles geek and I tried to never be that back then or now. I do know a guy though who can tell you what kind of toothpaste they all used. Talk about a shit storm of #1's and everything after their #1 hits... Loved their music but with everything happening on the West coast and their coming to the US I tried to stay more stateside. Their world-wide impact was and still is incredible. The OTHER cherished Beatle's album is their "Live in Italy" album given to me by the same guy. I looked for it the other day after playing the "For Sale" album and it was AWOL. It's here and either I missed it or it's misplaced or laying in a pile. It'll surface. It's an "up tempo" LP of live studio recordings and not really from a tour in Italy. Totally different sound and your foot will be tappin in no time!

  34. Last night I treated my bride of 37 years to the final Friday night Detroit Tigers home game at Comerica Park. She's a huge Tigers fan. Win or lose, there's a great fireworks show following the game. Thanks to the secondary ticket market, we were able to get great seats at a great price. Unfortunately, the team the Tigers put on the field is awful. I'm no baseball expert, but these young guys make fielding and throwing errors as if they want to be returned to the minors. The 70 win White Sox won 10-1. At the wife's request I ordered a pair of Ballpark Franks (the only time she'll eat a hotdog). The young vendor tried to give me $5.00 too much in change, which would have more than wiped out her tip. Toward the end of the game I bought a lemonade and put my wallet in a cupholder in the seat in front of me. That little voice that warns you not to set anything on the roof of the car must have been engrossed in the game. This morning I couldn't find my wallet. It quickly dawned on me that I'd put it in the cupholder. A call to the Comerica Park lost and found reached a pleasant young woman who confirmed my wallet was indeed there. I immediately returned to the scene of the crime (the game) and my stupidity. The wallet still had the cash and credit cards. The karma created when I corrected the vendor worked in my favor regarding the misplaced wallet. Regarding the Tigers, wait 'til next year . . . and a few more after that.

  35. Well Done Neil. I always point out when i’m given too much change or I’ll question whether i was charged enough if the price is less than i thought. I’ve found two wallets in my life ... one belonged to my best friend’s girlfriend and the other to my brother in law. No reward either time. My brother’s coworker put his wallet on top of a slot machine in Reno, then he went looking for the change person, came back and his wallet was gone. My brother asked, “What were you thinking?"

  36. Well the idea of the Super Heresy has appealed to me for some time but it was not until a customer last week revived my interest and coincidently I run across a set of HBR's from 1981 with soldered lug drivers in great shape so I guess I have to do it now. Waiting on parts to get here but doing what I can and that includes putting in a DE10 instead of the DE120 to replace the tweeter. Claude recommended this at the beginning of this thread but I had never though about doing it so I try it today. I will never recommend the DE120 for Heresy's again and it was a bit surprising how nice the DE10 sounded even on the smaller lens and the nice bonus with these is cheaper price.

  37. That's because it IS larger and part of the reason why it works so well for a Super Heresy!!

  38. Hi karlson3, In your post, you mention that the THTLP is about half the size of the Devastator. The measurements that I have indicate that the THTLP is actually a slightly larger cab. The measurements that I saw for the THTLP is 72" x 18" x 36", which is 27 cubic feet. The measurements for the Devastator are 48" x 24.75" x 30", which is about 20.7 cubic feet. I'm not sure if the models that you posted for the THTLP are all accurate. I'm not sure that mine are either! My understanding is that the THTLP is the THT in a different form factor, but with similar performance. If that is the case, then this is what I have. THT modelled 1w1m response using the 390HF driver. (Note: I am using drive voltage that based on each driver's DC resistance gives exactly 1 watt; and all models are 2pi space.) This model matches pretty well BFM's measurement of the sub, though BFM may have edited out some of the tips of the peaks in the blue line, though real horns tend not to have as strong of resonant peaks as Hornresp indicates. The locations of all the peaks are generally in the same regions (except the missing one around 170Hz), suggesting that the model is fairly reflecting the actual horn. With the same 1w1m, this is the comparison with the Devastator model. Maximum SPL based on 500 watts and 19mm excursion in the THT: (Note: the xmax on the 390HF is listed as 14mm, but that is overhang only. My guess is that usable excursion is up around 19mm or so, so that is what I used.) Maximum SPL based on 1700 watts and 19mm excursion in the Devastator: (Note: the driver was tested and has usable of just over 20mm, but distortion at that level is getting pretty high, so I used 19mm for the comparo.) We don't have a good place to measure the Devastator cab (first attempts were generating in-band cancellations from boundaries). Hopefully, we'll get some measurements posted soon! An important point is that THT was designed many years ago (before the era of the 21" superwoofers) and that the driver and recommended plate amp are less expensive than what is used in the Devastator, so in some sense this isn't really a fair comparison. But from a performance-only perspective, I think the models are reasonably capturing the differences between the two systems.
