  2. My book signing at Faubourg Marigny Art and Books (FAB) 600 Chartres (corner Frenchmen) on 9 November. The mime helped out for a while, then went to work the freer-spending drunks on Bourbon. Said he could make $40 an hour on good night. Some of the tourists on Frenchmen did not tip him after taking selfies with him, which is bad form. I gave him some bucks for his time. AFAIK, this is the last bookstore in the parish downriver from St. Ann street. La Librarie on Chartres closed closed this year, sadly missed. FAB is a great store with a wide selection and the owners were super to me. Since the book is a history of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, I wanted to have a signing there, but the store was closed for a few months, for remodeling under new owners,

  6. I have settled on a morning coffee ,and I don't feel the need to look any farther. Its a local place called TJs Roasters. I get a bag of their Ethiopia beans and a bag of their Guatemala beans and mix half and half in the grinder. This to me is perfect. Also the wife found this at TJ Maxx, and its works well for storing beans. Push the botton on top and it gets the the air out and seals the container. Its OXO brand. https://tjsroaster.com/shop

  13. I have a couple set of speakers that have been sitting on the shelf for a good six years now. I just need to pass them along so I can address some other things I would like to do. The heresy are 1976. When I go them they were unfinished and within the first few months I used then I had a voice coil go out on a woofer. I replaced both woofers with new K24-E from Klipsch. They have K55-V solder connect mids and K77-M square magnet tweets. Around the time I put the new woofers in I replaced the caps with AudioCap Thetas. This was all around 2012. I also had them re-veenered with ribbon cut mahogany. I also have magnetic grills for them, and two pie badges that could probably use a touch up on the adhesive. The kg1s are bone stock. They are walnut, which was one reason I got them. Back in the day I though they were going to be my rears for a "heritage" 5.1 but things changed over the years and I ended up going reference series. Both are in what I considered very, very good cosmetic shape. I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find some imperfection, but that is looking very hard. These are located in Washington, DC. Capitol Hill area. Be glad to hook them up if you stop by. I would like to sell both sets together. I am ready to eat sunk costs. $500 takes both pair. I have the original box for the kgs, and very well made boxes for the heresy(s). OR, would trade them for a cherry RC-7. I have more pictures but didn't downsize them all. Send an PM and we can go to email if you want more. Thanks.

  15. Was reflecting to my trip last year and the car. I made maximum use of cargo space in that little car. It has a space 37in wide [between the wheel wells], 2 feet of clearance thru the hatch/rear door and 4 feet plus an inch or two for padding, if I moved the seat forward an inch from its rear position. Some "smaller" cu/ft speakers, thinking of the tall ones would not fit. plywood LS just fit

  16. Do you remember The Chris Isaak Show? It followed the daily lives of Chris and his band members. The only actual actor was the keyboard player. The other band members did a decent job of playing themselves, though. It was a slice-of-life show with occasional comedy. To get to the point, Chris was was driving something like a high-miler 1965 Chevy II that would run on after being shut off. His manager said he deserved (and could afford) something better, so she bought him a late-model BMW sedan, complete with voice navigation. After a short drive, he said the car had to go. When the manager asked why, he said that he recognized the voice of the navi unit. It was an ex-girlfriend of his (the entertainment industry is not that big after all), and he really didn't need her telling him where to go in his new car, since he'd had enough of that when they were together. The agent understood and quickly got rid of the car.

  21. Sure the LF is good to go... with. Would have to chime in here to say, that is what ambient lighting is for. Do not look a day over 50 here when shown in the right amount of light... sure your Royal Blue effect will go along way in creating a new presentation... Is she attached?

  22. Don't know how this "vision" is gonna work now. That roll looks 4' x 45' +- . Might not be enough to do what I want to do but at the price of that stuff it's gonna have to work. I did find another precut section of AMC theater black velour drape already cut as another lot, which I think would cover the back wall. Talked w/a LF this afternoon who has done tons of plays and teaches English/Drama at a nearby Uni. She said it's usually very thin and thought that entire roll of the blue would only weigh about 20#. The black velour is usually a bit heavier but not much she said. Now I'm concerned that if I build panels out of 1x4 and fill them w/sound absorbing stuff it may show thru the material. Then something on the rear too. Saw some muslin in there too soooo maybe. I want these things light. Thunkin and the LF is laffin at me! lol Couple Furman Power conditioners there too so I'm thunkin on those. My head hurts! Time to get a shower and go check out jam night for a while I think. lol

  28. I have an earlier Juicy Music Peach. The one with the black plastic faceplate, before the metal ones. I can get the case off, so I will do that. I just tried my deoxit and it was empty, so I need to get some more of it. I have one more surgery on Monday, so it will have to wait a few days.

  29. There are several key factors in your decision making. How large is your room? How loud do you listen to your music? I say go with the 8000s unless you listen to your music very loud or have a huge room. I had RP-280s for 2 weeks (pretty much the same as the 8000, the 8000 is the newer model) and the 280s were really impressive. I found a great deal on rosewood Cornwall 3s and purchased them and returned the 280s. I never read a single poor review of the RP-280s anywhere. When you get to a certain level of high fidelity, there are diminishing returns on sonic improvement for the cash outlay. I could have been quite happy with the 280s, but the rosewood veneer CWs are something really special, both visually and to the ears. You listen to some of the old hands here and they will tell you short of Jubilees or the Klipsch commercial speakers, you are settling short. I don't feel that way at all. Not everybody has a huge room, or listens to their music beyond 85-90 db sound level, or has unlimited resources. Not every member here needs Jubes or commercial product to be content with their home music reproduction. I know I don't. Just my opinion.

  31. My standard advice for anyone looking to get into tubes for the first time--reach out and see if there is someone locally who would be willing to bring a tube amp over to listen to. You may find that you don't like the sound of tubes in your system, and it would save you the trouble of having to resell an amp after you purchased it.

  36. what a guy! NO really ... very nice of you to offer to help him. I’m nominating you for Stew’s Humanitarian of the Year Award. It’s very prestigious. The award normally comes with a ceremony full of costumes and a marching band; but since you’re in DFW and busy with the harvesting season -- we can skip the pomp & circumstance. Grab a cold beer and crank some Shins and just feel good about yourself.

  37. Tube or Solid State ? with cornscalas you can literally use about any amp from flea watt to skys the limit in power. High power= more headroom and usually harder hitting bass as well as better 15" bass driver control. Low power usually means more intimate I'm at a small venue feeling. What volume do you like to listen at, rock concert or save my ears / hearing ? How concerned with detail retrieval are you, Most rock is not recorded well and overly analytical can get strident & dry. There is alot of info needed to know about your preferences and tastes before any real suggestions can be made

  39. Patience is a virtue? Nosin last nite and found an auction. Some staging/production company unloading EVERYthing. Scaffolding, portable stages, road boxes and so much gear I don't know where to start. EQ's, Synths, Senn mics, Mackie amps, and speakers out the ying yang. Even a 5' Coors tap bar. Everything is pickup only so no shipping. Then there it was with my name all over it. Leftovers in a different color it seems. Panels to hang or spending big money on prefab junk? I'm ALL over this one unless it's goes nuts price wise. $21 now isn't too bad is it? Approx. 15 yards of Inherently flame-proof theatre fabric, Rose Brand certified

  40. Maynard- Thanks for sharing the interesting and informative article. Please describe one of your “desktop systems.” I constantly have to explain that the relationship of amp power to speaker size is counterintuitive. Present an audio layperson with a pair of Klipschorns and a pair of BBC ls3/5a monitors and ask which requires more power to play at a given volume. 11 out 10 will say the bigger speaker. When I explain the Klipschorns respect the laws of physics and are very efficient, but the ls3/5a monitors try to defy the laws of physics to get small drivers to produce big sound waves, they begin to understand. I have demonstrated the difference by producing glorious music from my efficient Klipsch speakers using only a tiny chip amp that cost less than lunch and fits in the palm of your hand. That same amp will produce sound from my BBC monitors but, by the time the electrons navigate the complex equalizing physics cheating crossovers, the sound emanating from the small KEF drivers can hardly be described as music. It takes 100 times the power to get “music” from the BBC monitors. Even then they lack the effortless dynamics and live sound of larger horn loaded efficient speakers.

  41. Hope that pre gets worked out for ya Dave. Ever buy a double album that only has three sides? Twice in the last couple a years that's happened to me. This band put an etch on the blank fourth side, not as clear in the picture but it's a wolf. If you love Southern Rock you'll know how refreshing it was to see the tv special with these guys a few years back. Was going to put up "Medicate My Mind" but this struck my fancy just now. Blackberry Smoke "Up on Cripple Creek" Play that one through... "Deep Elum Blues" follows with Billy doing some pickin'.
