  4. Well the leftover coffee is still OK. Glad y'all turned it off. I ain't touching the drinks on the tables. Sun is out and it's right nice ... in the sun. Air is still fresh. Think I saw a little frost. Pulling down Christmas lights from last season. Nothing excessive. A few strings in the mesquite trees. They get used year long for light in the backyard. Nice not having bugs flying around the doors. I keep stopping myself from thinking I want to salvage the good. I have lots of time... still, the time it takes to just replace the burnt bulbs is not worth the effort ... even if it worked. These lasted pretty good. 10mo or so. Not LED.

  5. Sometimes large speakers get separated from other things in an estate--often family members can't deal with an item like that. So it could be the seller/broker/eBay-lister/whatever doesn't have any other equipment to demonstrate the speakers with. I would simply ask if you can bring your own equipment to test them to make sure they are operating properly, and if everything checks out you are the buyer.

  6. SR6013 should be on its way, arriving mid-week, so that's happening! Also went down the rabbit hole of AVSForum Posts and HomeTheaterGurus videos on Subwoofer setup/calibration/alignment. This video was like a revelation for setting up multiple subs! Timely that it just came out within the last month, but man.. I wish I could have watched it years ago! The concept of sub EQ I understood but the concept of "alignment" was lost on me until seeing how it applies here. The knowledge here and a MiniDSP would have saved me loads of work. So as of 2 am this morning, also on the way is a MiniDSP 2X4HD that will take the place of my Behringer EQ. It's going to be a fun couple of weeks in my living room

  7. EdmundGTP: Your plan to upgrade sounds exciting. Although, my son and I have been huge fans of Pioneer Elite products for years, I'm sorry to say that our collective experience with their products has really shaken our confidence in them. I happen to own their former flagship model from 2004 and had to have the audio processor board replaced after two years of service. Naturally, the unit was JUST out of warranty, so that cost me $650. Considering that it was a $4,500 receiver, $650 made it worth replacing. However, ever since, there's been a low-frequency buzz in the system. I also had one of Pioneer Elite's top DVD players that utilized Firewire to engage surround sound for listening to SACD's and DVD-A disks. The Firewire section gave up the goods about two years after purchase. "Ugh". As for my son's experience, he's gone through three Pioneer Elite receivers and had issues with each one. He's switched to Onkyo and has been satisfied. When I decide to upgrade, which won't be much longer, I too am considering Marantz as on of my target brands. I'll be anxious to read your post when/if to decide to make the switch, to hear your take on the differences. I have a Klipsch RF-7, 7.1 system.

After reading into the Audyssey XT32 option which provides control of 2 subs independently, it appears that might be hugely beneficial to me. I currently run "2" subs. One consists of the subs built into my KSP-400's and the other is that Elemental Designs 15. They live at different spots in the room and trying to manually set up and eq them for optimal performance is a challenge even with REW and a parametric eq, since they are fed of the same output signal of the AVR. Any means to simplify/improve that portion of my system would be great! I'm slowly leaning towards the Marantz..

  10. But alas....they showed during the game Michigan leads the (consecutive win) streak at 9-8 so Ohio State has to win next year to tie the streak. One thing that befuddled me for Michigan.... is when they pulled Dobbins' shoe off. Clearly showed during replay that two of them did that. I'm scratching my head.... if I'm Michigan and Eak (<--spelled that way in honor of an old friend of mine who had that as a last name) Anyway, if they Eak out a win, people would talk about this 'dirty play" and it would be sullied. I would have wanted a clean win. (I don't think they had any other plays that were questionable so good for them!) Was just stupid & dumb. Now to come fully out in the open (for those who might not know).... I grew up going to OSU games as my Grandfather went there and my father was always enamored with their band. (Dad & I both went to Miami of Ohio). So been going to those games for 50 years. Now, my "OTHER" team is the Bengals. So now we have fully undefeated Ohio State rocking & rolling..... then we have the fully defeated (winless) Bengals showing the other extreme. Sigh, please let me enjoy my dichotomy in peace. After all, Bengals might win tomorrow and screw up their draft standing.

  12. I won an auction where I scored a pair of Lascalas, a pair of SP1s and an Sw15. I am checking this giant subwoofer out and it's not too bad. For being 26 years old it is actually pretty darn good. My only problem with it is that it is huge. Is there much of a market for this beast ?

I offered to do that with the ones I found that had significant value, heck he was offering me the rest!! That leaves craigslist that I believe you still don't have to go through a massive registration process for. I also got under his skin asking "Well why do you think your esteemed engineer friend didn't just sell them to get that grand!" That many would be a chore to sell any way except in one or two lots. He could be passing out a bucket deal like @Dave1290 got! SC near GSP be on the lookout!

  16. Most things on Ebay are purchased without being able to hear, see or touch them, so there is a degree of trust one needs to have to proceed. On the other hand, the seller has 343 sales, I believe, with 100% positive feedback. That for myself, is good enough to take the chance on something I want. There is only a little over 3 hours left at this time. As they require a pick -up, they might not sell. Did you ask him if he wants to make a deal outside of Ebay, or after the ad times out? that way he will not have to pay them a percentage of the sale and perhaps he would be more amenable to let you hear them.

  17. Those bolts are for the WA accessory and they are ONLY screwed into the plate. Either a decoupling capacitor shorted, you have a bad wired outlet, or there is a conductive path to the chassis inside the amp.

  19. On another note, isn't the finish on the baffle some kind of heat-shrink plastic? Has anyone seen the fronts done in white before like they are on this pair? It really makes the horn, woofers, and ports stand out--looks very cool!

  20. Growing up a fan of Ohio State.... I still have to admit I feel some empathy for Michigan fans. I know how terrible it feels to watch (in my case, the Bengals) do terrible for (in their case) so many years..... it's a terrible feeling. Michigan has lost the last 8 games to their most hated rival (if I understand their situation correctly). That would suck on a major scale.

  22. I had a receiver for 10 years the Onkyo 805. Great receiver, but I had some issues like quiet center channel and great bass, but never really from the center channel or surrounds. So I delt with this because it worked and didn’t really need an upgrade. Then, I got my new NAD 777 receiver. Now, my issues with the Onkyo are gone. No more quiet center channel and the bass is great from the speakers. More balanced sound. Glad I upgraded, plus I like streaming music via Bluetooth which I couldn’t before. I say go for it, you can always use the other one as a spare or if you get a second set of speakers. Most places have a 30-60 day return so if you don’t notice a difference or like your old one better, just send it back. You May want to consider the NAD 758, it’s onsale now 400 off so should be a similar price to the Marantz but you get Dirac live room correction. Like I said mine sounds more balanced and has great center clarity.   28. Go for the Marantz. The biggest single advantage you'll get is Audyssey XT32, if you have the time and patience to set it up correctly. My Klipschorns have never sounded so good as they do with Audyssey (the Audyssey Flat option, without dynamic EQ and without dynamic volume). Having my speakers and room EQ'd over hundreds of points by Audyssey improved the sound greatly. Here's what I would recommend: Get the Marantz Install any room treatments (a carpet or area rugs if you don't already have one or the other, plus some absorbers and diffusers or diffusing furniture, art objects, what-have-you). Run Audyssey XT32, with all 8 microphone positions. First read this "Audyssey FAQ Linked Here" -- it is an accesable, relatively quick read, in easy to read question and answer format. Then, at your leisure, read this. GUIDE TO SUBWOOFER CALIBRATION AND BASS PREFERENCES * The Guide linked above is a comprehensive guide to Audio & HT systems, including: Speaker placements & Room treatments; HT calibration & Room EQ; Room gain; Bass Preferences; Subwoofer Buyer's Guide: Sealed/ported; ID subs; Subwoofer placement. It is the be-all and end-all, and a bit more up to date than the first one. As mentioned in both of those guides, most people will want to turn up the bass 3 to 6 dB (in a few cases even more) after running Audyssey, for the reasons given. It is so much better to impose your preference with a largely kink free curve (provided by Audyssey) than it is with a typical room curve.

  31. That K55M is not OEM to that Heresy. The K55V is the earlier model. +++ Here is the history of the H-700: +++ Origin of the Heresy, by HDBRbuilder: (from Klipsch Forums 06/14/2019) The story of how the H-700 Got its name The only thing "RARE" about the Heresy H-700 is the label itself designating them as H-700's...and that was just a stop-gap nomenclature anyway! To fully understand, you have to remember what was going on in the audio world at the time and how it affected Klipsch decisions. When PWK introduced the Heresy, it wasn't even called that. It was the "model H"...which came about from a conversion with a colleague, PWK was talking about the speaker while sketching it out on a napkin, at a restaurant (IIRC!,) and the colleague mentioned that PWK's decision to market a supplementary NON-FULLY-HORN-LOADED speaker to the K-horn seemed to be Klipsch Heresy! Remember, it was the FIRST speaker to be successfully-marketed by PWK as a supplementary speaker to a K-horn!...to be used in a separate room or in the same room with a K-horn...most people then had monaural systems, anyway! But PWK loved the three-speaker stereo array and I am sure in the back of his mind he was thinking "not only is it a supplementary speaker, but it also a budget stepping-stone to selling an additional K-horn down the road as more people go to the three-speaker stereo array...using the little speaker as their center-channel". He was "looking into the future" of audio, and his own business! Make sense?? All throughout PWK's "audio career" he had to look into the future!...much of that attitude had to do with other technologies catching-up, actually! His game-plan was to design and market speakers for a living, and to support his other audio research interests! And he hoped it would all work-out for him that way! Make a good living, and continue the research he loved, without needing to resort to a different career, which would force his TRUE interests back to "hobby-status"! WE ALL HAVE THAT KIND OF DREAM, don't we?? He wanted to live his dream, just like everybody else! Pretty simple! He had all kinds of ideas for speakers, but his MAJOR LIMITING FACTOR was that technology had not yet gotten to the point he could implement some of them! THAT IS EXACTLY WHY the Jubilee development came so damned late in his life...he was waiting for technology to catch-up and he was part of the great many others who were assisting in nudging it forward! He wanted a TWO-WAY fully horn loaded speaker which would out-perform the current three-way Klipschorn!...he was waiting on technology to catch-up in the UPPER frequency horns!..so that could FINALLY HAPPEN for him! OK, back to the Heresy: The Heresy DID NOT NEED TO BE a full-spectrum speaker...its design parameter was to be SUPPLEMENTARY to a K-horn, therefore it just had to be similarly-voiced, ...and also didn't NEED to have a bass horn...the K-horn provided the bass!...but it at least needed to provide SOME BASS!!...especially if used in a separate room! VOILA! The Heresy! But, PWK soon realized early on after its introduction that non-K-horn owners were buying them as an inexpensive alternate to the cost of owning a K-horn...so improvements began relatively early-on in the life of the Heresy speaker! Things were upgraded...especially for the woofer and the mid-horn lens...this happened in stages and for the woofer end of things was based on purchase cost, quality, longevity, and performance-matching with other drivers already in the Heresy. So, with the upgrades in those things, cross-over network changes were required here and there. One of the things PWK wanted even before the mid-1960's was to improve the mid-horn-lens...better dispersion and such...the K-700 was the answer to that! And it actually REMAINED the answer for the Heresy for around two decades of Heresy production!! By the time the K-700 was ready to be used in production, the big move from monaural to stereo systems was in full swing...and had been so for a few years! PWK was concerned with people buying an additional Heresy to go with their old one when they up-graded to stereo, and how different they may sound from each other...so how do you let people know that they may not sound the same as the one they already have...because you have changed the mid-range horn lens?? Simple: just name it after that horn change! And how long do you NEED to call it that before you can just call it a Heresy again?? Not very long!...just a few years, MAYBE even LESS, would be enough! In the audio world, news travels quickly, EVEN IF you don't advertise much! People will review it due to the "new name", compare it to the previous one, and word will get out about the differences...too easy! Voila! The H-700! Pretty simple! I really don't consider them "RARE"...simply because so many of them were sold!...in a relatively short-time-span!...using THAT nomenclature! Also, there is really very little difference between it, and the Heresy speaker that followed it, other than the nomenclature of what it was CALLED!...they are both voiced pretty-much identically!..same cabinet, same tweeter, same mid-horn and driver...yadda yadda, yadda...a bit of crossover change came about, but not REALLY much over the next twenty years of the combined H700 and (what is NOW called the) "Heresy 1" version production-time-span. Pretty much the same speaker throughout that time, for all intents and purposes, anyway! Some really nit-picking people will argue my opinion...talking about HOW VERY MUCH DIFFERENCE THOSE CHANGES MADE, and they actually DID, when every one of them is added together...but I say they still sounded about the same!l ...But, to each his/her own! So, truth be known, what ACTUALLY IS RARE, is just what was written on the LABEL-tag of the H-700...and that's about it! IMHO!!  +++

  35. Youngest has a Chrysler 200 in Phoenix. Started overheating so she took it back to a dealership several times and they wanted to replace the motor because they checked everything else. Wrong! So she called the oldest daughter who's hubby tinkers working on cars. He told her what to have put on and it's been fine ever since. Young good looking blonde sure we'll sell her a new one. Didn't happen and she's not going back. She did call the service manager and tell him what the problem was for his future reference. I'll bet that was a great call. lol

You probably know my feelings on this subject: If I can hear a significant difference with some amplifier swap or I think that one or more amplifier gain knobs have been twiddled, I'd be inclined to measure SPL and phase response differences to help visualize what's occurring. I always keep the microphone/stand nearby to plug in, and the Xilica stays plugged into a USB port on the computer, so the only real action is pulling out the foam rubber pad from the nearest closet and placing it on the floor between the loudspeaker and the microphone. The whole thing takes 5 minutes or less, including bringing up REW on the computer and setting preamp channel muting/gain levels. I don't usually start from scratch zeroing all PEQs, unless I've got new drivers that I'm putting into the setup or I'm testing some driver/horn combination for someone else. The only exception is when I tried out the Danley style PEQ--only crossover approach (i.e., using no "named" crossover filters). That required zeroing all channels to get the raw response of each driver. From there, I can see where the crossing frequency should be. I then begin running REW's EQ facility to find more optimal flattening PEQs, layering them on in waves using updated measurements until I get the response as flat as I can while accounting for microphone/room boundary and room mode cancellations (identified by non-flat areas of the excess group delay curve). But to dispel fears of being OCD about it: I usually go months or a year between measurements and DSP crossover PEQ updates if everything sounds fine. There is no drift in response over time like there is with passive crossovers due to aging of components. The drivers themselves are stable after their initial break in period. Chris

  37. Let's use an example of an air-motion transformer (AMT-1) made by ESS in California: The full-range spectrogram is shown below: Note that the spectrogram "spike" is slender and almost vertical. This implies that the driver has very good internal damping or has very low moving mass (in this case, it has both). This is one of the reasons why the sound of the AMTs are "crisp" and transparent (i.e., they have a lot of clarity). Impulses in the music tracks come and go, and the driver responds almost perfectly, that is until we get below 1 kHz, where the driver looks to be "smearing out" to the right at ~800 Hz. This looks like it's getting close to resonance. In fact, it is--but not the type of resonance that you'd expect, i.e., moving mass of the diaphragm with its suspension restoring it back to the rest position. Rather, it's more likely that it's the moving mass of air in the horizontal "horn" that surrounds the driver, thus acting like a real horn. In this case, only in the horizontal direction--not the vertical direction (perhaps more discussion on that later). Also note that there is lesser vertical spike (yellow color) at about 1.8 ms behind the original spike centered at 0 ms. This is the backwave of the dipole AMT-1 reflecting off the wall behind it at ~12 inches, then arriving at the microphone after the original spike of acoustic energy (two-way travel of the wave = ~24 inches round trip distance). If the rear wall were farther away, the resulting sound would subjectively sound more spacious due to the added delay of the reflected pulse being processed by the human hearing system to indicate a larger internal space (longer delays = larger dimensions of the room). In other drivers, you see these dual vertical spikes where the rearward-traveling acoustic impulse reflects off something inside the driver itself (like the enclosure of the driver's backwave, the back end of a complex-shaped moving diaphragm that has significant depth, or the mouth of a horn reflecting sound back into the horn itself, then returning at a later time). This results in a smearing of impulses (as far as the human hearing system is concerned). This is why lighter mass moving diaphragms sound more airy and light. In the case of your spectrogram... ...you see a secondary pulse of acoustic energy at 0.7 ms from 2 to 4 kHz (and where the cursor is located in time), indicating that a reflection or some farther removed portion of the diaphragm from the microphone is radiating the same frequencies--but farther back than the first radiating portion of the diaphragm. This isn't what you're looking for, and it results in a less transparent sound. Additionally, the spectrogram pulse is getting quite wide, indicating that moving mass is smearing out the impulse (relative to the AMT-1 spectrogram above). This general widening of the spectrogram pulse indicates a less "airy" sounding driver. Moving cones tend to have spectrograms that look wider and wider as the frequency decreases because of their moving mass. Compression drivers don't have to move very far (in fact, they only have to move above 1/5th the distance as a cone to create the same SPL on-axis), so they sound very airy and light in comparison. Now, all the above gets more complicated due to the minimum response of the human hearing system vs. frequency, but in general the comment above accurately describes what is occurring. I'll stop there and let you ask questions. Chris

  38. Were you using the same smoothing? Did you notice if "frequency-dependent windowing" is now turned on? Because the REW default is that it usually is on (IIRC), and you have to watch this when re-loading REW. The reason for the rapid phase wrap at 6 kHz and higher is that there is a dual-peak of acoustic energy (SPL) above 6 kHz which you can see in the spectrogram, and the phase calculation within REW can't decide if the main SPL is earlier or later. This isn't really phase wrap but a dual pulse of energy. For the casual observer, the following can occur at higher frequencies: re-radiation coming from one end of the driver that is farthest away from the microphone (like a bounce of acoustic energy) re-radiation from the mouth of the horn (i.e., termination bounce) two drivers playing is parallel above the crossover frequency (like the K-55 and the K77 drivers do in the older Klipsch Heritage loudspeakers having no low pass filter on the midrange driver circuit, and the K-55 is always lagging the K-77 tweeter) something around the microphone or within 1 foot (30 cm) of the mouth of the horn when taking measurements re-radiating acoustic energy Etc. The obvious thing to do is use more acoustic absorption over all objects near the loudspeaker under measurement or near the microphone. You can even place absorptive material around the mouth of the horn itself and take more measurements to see if this is contributing. Chris

  39. Agreed, I've gotten some good ear time in recently and very happy with the direction I'm heading/feeling. Yes feeling, I think I am approaching and understanding some of what Chris and other have been discussing in the "Subconscious Auditory Effects " thread. I've recently stumbled upon what I believe is a game changer for me. Too long for this thread; when I have the time/desire I post something in its own location to hopefully help others perhaps. Long story short I believe for the past year I've had a bad delivery mechanism (computer and sound card) on my input side. I repurposed an old laptop and have gotten more consistent measurements (part of my questions above) and better results. I know what Rudy and Chris have for measurements I'd be curious to see others so we can compare and contrast. For a long time I was getting measurements with several wraps of phase typically 6 to 10 depending on XO point, PEQs, Delay, etc. but it seemed like very slow and incremental progress and often lateral moves or steps backwards in sound. Mind you it never sounded bad but we always want more. With my new (old) computer in place I've gone from Phase plots that typically looked like this: To more like this: and Finally with a bit of tweaking this: Which looks and much more importantly sounds to me a LOT better. Not just different but substantially better. I'd be happy to post GD, SGram, Impulse for any interested but they have all improved quite a bit as well. Thoughts as to why the top plot does not have the rapid zig-zag of phase wraps but the next two do? The rough spectrum form 6K to 10K is similar in dips and humps for all 3.

  40. Unfortunately, I'm right at 55 miles away but that's about the same distance as before and I picked up all of the Little Rock channels. But now, there's some trees behind me where I would need to point towards. I'm almost tempted to buy one just to tinker with in case I decide to pay the dang $400 cancellation fee. Sigh... Not to mention, we get that WatchTV stuff free through AT&T since we're on the Unlimited & More cell plan.

  42. I have owned a bunch of MCM-1900 4-way stuff and a bunch of KP-600 stuff. Coytee pointed out something I agree with, the MWM is cleaner sounding than the KP-600 Bass Bin, although the KP-600s seem to have more although not as clean Bass. It is for this reason, the "more" Bass that Kevin and I prefer the 600s over the MCM system. Mate a KP-1802 with either system and it will KILL either system in stock form. In that case, I would stay all horns with an MWM setup, but remember that portability is also at play.
