  2. Spent a few more hours on the Cornscala project as I was at my dads for the weekend. I sprayed the fronts heavy and the finish looks much nicer than the backs. The backs looked a bit blotchy, but they were still wet when I left. I may need to respray the backs one more time.

  3. Way back in time, there was this young hillbilly that was completely obsessed with listening to music. He attended a party (circa 1977 or '78) where the tunes were being played on a Harman/Kardon 730. Impressed, he went and bought a H/K 430 and loved it for about 10 years. Then the bug bit and he went through all kinds of separate components. The 430 got lost in the crawlspace of his mind. Now he's an old hillbilly that has regaled himself to simplifying his equipment to a few components. A set of RF 3's, a Fluance RT 85, and added yesterday, a dreamy vision from the past. A beautiful, one owner H/K 730. Near mint, unmolested. He spent the day connecting and bi-wiring, then spent his evening listening and being transported. Some days it's good to be him.... .

  5. Linux is starting to make headway against MS in some places but program compatibility is MS's ace in the hole. Not one other system comes close. In my world of CAD and CAM programs you can get things for Apple and Linux at times but mostly they are not full featured and are there mainly as a sop to those who wish the could use those programs on Apple and Linux. Maybe Linux is better now but I seem to remember all the tinkering these Linux guys have to do to make things work and I want no part of it. Win 10 has gone a long way towards making people mad though and this new style update cycle has alienated a LOT of companies. Never get homeowner Win 10 always get Win Professional and you can delay updates for up to a half year and set schedules for when the installs happen.

  6. Party went off pretty well! Decided to borrow a powered EV sub and save the sub project for the next party, which will be in 4 months. Learned a lot about what the speakers can handle... and sadly learned my old amps are not cut out for party levels. I was using a soundcraftsmen pm840 to run the heresys (wired in series 2 per channel) and even after home testing as soon as I got the system wired one channel began to trip when any signal was introduced (maybe from the cold or the transport?), so I had to run out to borrow an amp from a very nice studio owner friend. the quartets (used as "mains") were getting pushed a little too hard for the woofer as the party went on. In a room that size I'm thinking the lowend information in the heresys and the quartets below 60 hz is really just a needless strain. I had a thought i could use a digital crossover to deliver less sub information to the speakers in the future. anyway...lots of fun, lots of dancing, and the room sounded pretty amazing...full, clear, and detailed. thanks again for the advice, I'll be needing more soon I'm sure. here is a poor quality vid where you can see everything ratcheted up and ready to go!

  7. Even though I live in West Virginia, Joe is from Athens, Ohio, a half-hour from me. Everybody from our area is pulling for him and follows how he does with LSU, even though this is Ohio State and WVU country. I watched the Heisman ceremony, something I haven't done for years. A more humble person they could not have found.

  9. good for migraine and cluster headaches, too. Sposed to prevent for 6 months+ per dose I hear it's good for preventing migraine/cluster headaches, too ditched Windows. Had linnux installed. I'll be fumbling around till I get more familiar. Not into that kinda thing, but it is sposed to be much less trouble in the long run. The time consuming part was backing up the old stuff.Photos and that. You'll prolly hear me cussing the computer periodically until I find my way around. Lucky I remembered passwords. Didn't have them saved.

  10. I was wondering when Linux would get mentioned... Headless, no hoops to jump through there. And the price is right. In terms of reliability it'd be worth the cost even if it were double that of a Windows Server license. Except for the anti-greenness of it, an old Pentium 100 box could handily serve up music to many clients simultaneously so no serious hardware need apply.

  11. That is all he said. I assume he was implying he would report me to Ebay. I told him his bid was obvious and he is the one that should be careful. I also told him his "Rare" White Oak was not a rare color without a special order from Klipsch (with a special order receipt) He either made the White Wash / Light Oak combo or he bought them that way. White Wash color is all White. Light Oak has a Light Oak box with a Black front Motor board. I also said there is no such thing as a CF-4 +. I told him I was just helping him clean up his ad and not harassing him. He has not replied and I have not heard from Ebay. lol It pisses me off when guys try to rip off people with "rare" speaker color combos and adding a "+" to make them sound like buyers are getting something extra. The guy is trying to boost the price based on a false bid and a poorly worded listing that he used or made up.

  12. I added a couple new pieces to the display cabinet I have been working on. I finally have it to where I am pretty happy. I will be adding and subtracting items down the road but I am just smitten with it at the moment. I will be adding some black curtains to go behind the cabinet in the near future. Now I just wish I had another cabinet to fill[emoji51] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. Clueless, never really looked at it so really don't know about the handle. Yup it's at least that old. Got it in the early 70's and never really used it that much. Too sharp for me to play with on ham or turkey so it lays in the drawer w/ a couple other one's I use from this old guy in Ohio. Hi name is Mooney Warther. who started carving everything from working pliers to working train engines then eventually started making knives for his wife to use in the kitchen. Started w/a simple paring knife and progressed. The museum is simply amaze balls! His wife's button collection is also! Not trying to thread crap but these knives really are the bomb for everyday use. Pricey but fantastic and last forever. Here's a link for a bit of historical info showing the place if you want to skim it. EVERY thing is carved from wood or ivory by him! If you want to get a paring knife I highly recommend these. My go to knife in the drawer but I have two. Think I paid under $20 in the early 70's. Free sharpening too! They NEVER wear out. Just about ready to take a drive over to Amish country near Dover, Ohio and get one sharpened. Might just do it myself though All of them are killer! https://warthercutlery.com/

  20. Well, although our friend can be a bit eccentric, I don't know many other places that will do the quality work that he does. He's done other pieces for me that I know he didn't really want to work on, but he did a great job and was reasonable.

  21. Yes. The passive radiater. I believe they had known parts for the 15". I had to measure and find something that would work for the 12-inch passive radiator. Who knows if it perfect as I have never heard one without holes but my speakers have stronger low end w/ the repaired surrounds. There was another surround but I believe it was rubber. Maybe it was a closer match but I didn't want to try it. There were more measurements for the rubber one. I will try to remember to post a link.

  26. Sounds pretty nasty, we need some pics. I had a black 72 Dodge Demon, 340 4 speed, sweet running car. Traded it straight up with a guy for a red 72 Corvette, 454 TH 400. He wanted my Demon bad! I see you're from MI, the epicenter of great American muscle cars in the 1960s and on. Used to be quite a street race scene in Detroit, least what I read about in Hot Rod over the many years.

  27. @BigStewMan Yea they practice ice skating and their hockey moves. Sleet then snow then sleet again and highs in the twenties or lower we could build actual igloos here when I was a kid. Sleet on top of snow up there with that cold might not take a zamboni to smooth things out for skating!

  29. I haven't followed this thread closely, but reading an occasional post I see many mentions of "phase wrap" and efforts to eliminate it. Understand that phase wraps are an artifact of the way we typically express phase angle -- between -180° and +180°. When a phase angle passes through -180° on its way to -181°, it wraps-around to +179°. The same thing happens in the other direction, too. It is not indicative of a problem. It is just an indication that the phase angle is increasing or decreasing with frequency. Understand also that time delay causes phase shift. Imagine a perfect loudspeaker with perfectly flat phase response, and a perfect microphone measuring it. Move the microphone farther away by exactly one wavelength at 20kHz (about 5/8 of an inch), and you will see the phase change from a flat line to a downward sloped line, passing through -180° at 10kHz then wrapping around and returning to 0° at 20kHz. Move it by a total of two wavelengths at 20kHz, and you will see the phase pass through -180° at 5kHz, 0° at 10kHz, -180° at 15kHz, and back to 0° at 20kHz. So some of the phase wraps being observed are caused by the measurement apparatus -- the microphone isn't in exactly the same place "today" as it was "yesterday".

  30. Over the years I’ve gathered several chef knives from many manufacturers that no doubt vary in their makeup. Regardless of brand I keep them all razor sharp having learned how to sharpen blades. They live in a dedicated drawer with their blades protected. They’re cleaned, dried and steeled after each use. I use a razor strop with steel polish as the final sharpening step and routinely in maintaining their sharpness. I have sharpened knives for others who do not keep them as jealously regarded as I do...... and they all eventually go dull. These are tools. Keep them at their peak and they will remain that way. And since they’re really used for relatively light duty applications they do not have to be extremely strong. I own $20 knives that are kept as sharp as my $100 knives.

  31. Do you folks ever get used to that extreme cold? I see photos of people at outdoor christmas events and it’s super-duper cold. Guys wearing baseball caps and what appear to be regular old coats instead of extreme cold foul-weather stuff. I once worked on an Ice-breaking ship. When it hit 40, we were outside with short-sleeved shirts, but when it was 26 below -- we were real cold and didn’t want to be outside. So, is all a mental thing--this is what it is and i’m still going to go out and do stuff with my friends regardless of the weather?

  36. Where are you located? Members here can recommend reputable service people. You're looking at $200 to $300 for that. Well worth it to get the unit performing for another 20-30 years.

  37. A Heresy, in either vertical or horizontal orientation, will sound fine. No need to modify it to lay it on its side. Try to get a 1986 or later Heresy II with the square input pocket, so you can upgrade it to a Heresy III, or just get an H3 in the first place. They do sound much better. However, if you don't mind having your TV sitting a little higher and want great sound, a Belle Klipsch is highly recommended. It also makes a great TV stand.

  39. Unless you've got an anechoic chamber standing by for your tests, the solution I've found is to mark the location of the microphone stand, and the position of the microphone on the stand is not moved (i.e., the microphone and stand in my service stays assembled and ready to use off out of the way in-room at ear height), setting up to place the microphone well within an inch of where I had it in prior measurements on prior occasions. I have done this many times successfully. This may be due to the HF drivers/horns that you own. I have no issues if I get within the inch tolerance that I mentioned above, but the K-402 horns have very consistent coverage and well behaved time-based behavior by comparison. Yes, because you can verify nothing really changed in the spectrogram plot. Yes. The scale is dBSPL (i.e., no correction for "A" or "C" weightings). Not a spike, but rather a spire with concave sides, because the period of the sound waves is increasing logarithmically as you traverse downward on the spectrogram plot toward lower frequencies. 40. I wouldn't say you overdid it in your processing of this image at all. It appears to me the contrast was reduced slightly for better definition. A technique I frequently use in Gimp. Color saturation and contrast, my two fav tools in PP.

  41. Just an FYI, if you don't already know this it is a pretty good time saver. I was always changing to the All SPL section to set the smoothing in REW....every reading, All SPL, smoothing drop down list, Psycho Acoustic, repeat. If you go to Preferences|Analysis you can set a default smoothing and it will be applied to every reading. You can still apply none or any other type for a given measurement if you need a one-off smoothing on the All SPL screen.
