  4. That long time ago was when there were mental hospitals in every city. Those who couldn’t cope with life in the community, through no fault of their own, could be treated or at least taken care of. When was the last time you saw a fully operational mental hospital? Nearly all of them have been shut down. Why? Has there somehow been a huge reduction in the number of mentally ill people in society? Of course not. Just as some people are born or become physically handicapped, there will always be a certain percentage of society who are born or become mentally handicapped. What was the change around forty years ago that caused the mental hospitals to be scaled down or closed? New therapeutic drugs, that’s what. When those new anti-psychotic drugs became available, they transformed the lives of many sick people. The problem, not fully realized at the time, was that they were not a cure. They needed to be taken under medical supervision. Just giving a mentally ill person a prescription and wishing them good luck was not the solution. Mentally ill people were discharged from hospitals in large numbers and left to fend for themselves in the community. Being mentally ill and all, quite a few of them could not organize themselves to find homes, pay rent, maybe find a job they could do. They would forget to take their meds on schedule, or find they made them feel too dopey. The ones that found jobs would get fired, and soon evicted, while the ones that couldn’t work at all couldn’t get much else done properly, either, and they’d get evicted, too, or ripped off by unscrupulous landlords. Within a few years, many of these mental patients were homeless and begging for food. No matter, now the governments could save so much money by closing all those hospitals that the fates of the former patients were overlooked. Inevitably, drug dealers found new customers among people who could be easily convinced to try something, anything, that would make their miserable days feel better for at least a few hours. Soon, they had drug problems to go along with their mental problems. And not being able to take proper care of themselves physically, they would be showing up in Emergency rooms in bad shape. And now here we are in the 21st century, with everyone grumbling about the “homeless” problem. It’s long past time the governments across the developed nations realized that it’s time to re-open or build new mental hospitals, because even when they die young on the streets, there are still many mentally ill people among us. Every new generation has some children who aren’t as able as the rest, and will need care that may be beyond the abilities of even the most saintly parents. These unfortunates are no less part of our society than we are. They don’t deserve to have to sleep on the streets and beg for food. I tell this to every politician who asks me what our city, or our province, or what our country needs. Hopefully, enough people will point this out that action will finally be taken, that governments will admit that they need to spend the money to provide hospitals for the mentally ill as well as for the physically ill. Rant mode off.

  6. Mornin' All Another sunny and warm... added some wind to the mix. I'm steering clear of that last discussion. Otherwise it will turn into a longwinded rant. Everyone in the storm area accounted for? bunch of folks w/o electricity. Need to go to the dump and hit the farmers' market... That's the plan for the day. was wondering why my back was sore last night... until I remembered I stood and peeled/pared 3 or 4 lbs of apples. Made applesauce. Told wife it might need some sugar... used Red Decicious, and sometimes, all they are is crisp - not even sweet. Not a fan of Delicious Apples anyway. Don't much care for many of the newer varieties. Grannie Smith are OK. Gimme a Macintosh, Jonathon, Pippin, Winesap any day. that one thing I noticed when we first moved here in 1970. Apples? You had a choice of Red or Golden Delicious. es todo. Then we started getting Grannys. We can get varietal apples from the little store. Might have to buy a case... but, we can get them. Never tried ordering stuff at Safeway. Can you?

  7. I understand and have been well pleased with the two way pro systems I have had and the S-MWM. I stuck those N314x on my 402's in lieu of the 1132's and was amazed at what they did. My complaint and the reason the 1132's went back on there was lower notes like Cellos or the deeper set of chimes on Pink Floyds "Time" sounded much better with the 1132's. But wood percussion, cymbals and higher hz instruments sounded better with the N314x. My preference is for better mid range but if I could combine the two and get the best of both it would be jaw dropping.

  11. Starting a new build of a set of Belles. Material is 24mm baltic birch ply for the doghouse & 18mm baltic birch ply for the rest of the cabinet. The sides & back will have two layers of 18mm ply. Here is the new table saw which should do the job.

  14. Good post Islander and something I have seen first hand. I was a case manager at the local MHC for three years and saw the results of deinstitutionalization. The edict of "less restrictive environment" flooded the street with those with no idea how to manage on the "outside". A handful of psychotropic drugs and more meds to control the side effects and an appointment with a therapist once a month does not cut it for those use to 24/7 supervision. Then you have the age old problem of folks taking their meds until they start feeling better and think they no longer need them. To add insult to injury the MHC ran into financial woes and closed it's doors. Private agencies sprung up but never proved to make a dent in the number of those needing treatment. Yep I could go on too but that's the Cliff Notes version and enough for now. Now for a second cup.........

Not a mark on it inside or out. Like new. Looked it up and $2350 new. Not me, I'm cheap!

  27. Cut the angles for the sides of the dog house & everything was held in place with a few nail gun nails & then glued & screws together.

  28. Then I made a jig to cut the steep angle on the ramps. If I did this again I would make this a bit differently as with this jig I couldn't cut through the full width of the material & had to do two cuts. Still came out reasonably OK though.

  32. The old English cars and bikes can be a lot of fun. I've owned many. Fasteners and threads are BWS (British Whitworth Standard) so be prepared to get at least the basic hand tools. To easy to round off-strip hard to find nuts and bolts. Also a few taps and dies. Have fun.

  33. Record Store Day was good to me! Alan Holdsworth's "Road Games" re-mastered from 1983 and is one great album! His second solo release set the stage so to speak and shaped many of his future projects. My second RSD purchase was Roger Water's Live in Berlin "The Wall" with sooo many great artists contributing for one cause "The Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief." Mastered and pressed in Germany it's an exceptionally sweet live album!

  34. Wow, FINALLY got caught up in here. Steve's vertical, Grasshopper saved the recliner and will prolly work on an ejection seat at some point, found the Coors, which is VERY important and never gave me anything I didn't ask for. Hoping everyone down South is going to make it thru the storm. Now MicroMara is ANOTHER story molesticating all those poor nursies over there. 😂 Thinking I've got nice weather around here til the end of next week and I'm trying to get ahead of the game a bit but my Auctioneer buddy keeps coming up w/great stuff at amazing prices. The down side is driving to pick the stuff up. Snagged a couple more like new magic carpets for this place AND the catch of the eon. Picked up this Kennedy tool chest for $525. They had TONS of S-K Wayne tools that went cheap also but I'd just hurt myself with all of those. Got there to pick up and found out why he had the tools & chest. He had the engine torn down and was working on his wife's 1960 MG Roadster when he passed. Talk about a beautiful car? MINT condition too. My buddy is talking to her about selling it to me but so far no soap. This thing is pristine. So I've been holed-up in the garage takin care of business before the weather changes and I have to figure out where I'm going to put the MG. hahaha I KNOW I've got a pack or two of gum in there somewhere!

  35. ********************** FOLLOW UP AND RESULTS ************************ The Crites crossovers arrived Monday, and I installed them Wednesday night. All I can say is wow. And that is a very emphatic WOW! I thought these speakers sounded good in the compromised state they were in when I purchased them, but I had no idea just how good they could sound, even to my 59 years young ears. And to those folks that suggested I purchase Chorus 1 crossovers instead of the original 3.0b crossovers.......I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. I have no idea how they could possibly sound better. With these speakers I am listening to music I have heard for decades and hearing it for what seems like the first time. The detail of the reproduction is absolutely astounding. And some of the songs I can't get out of my head because they are now so fresh and new to me. And if the music features horns, it is even better. For example the song "Your Latest Trick" by Dire Straits off their Brothers in Arms album which features a trumpet and saxophone is an epic listen. That entire album has always been one of my favorites to test speakers, well except for the lone pop tune on it "Money For Nothing" which is utterly forgettable, it is a fun listen with fine speakers or quality headphones. And of course any song by Chicago will shock you as well. No my 301's are not the Cornwall's I have always desired, but they are now close enough for me! And in some ways a better fit for my current needs and setting than the Cornwall's would be anyway. But in any case there is no arguing the superior design and reproduction of a Klipsch speaker - none at all. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your input and suggestions on this project. It is an absolute success and I am a very happy camper!

  36. I went there a long time ago, very cool city, this was way before the crime and homeless people problems. It's terrible for such a nice city to fall apart like that, mismanagement has ruined a great city, no one even wants to visit anymore, such a waste.

  37. I did the same thing last year, sitting with a bunch of friends and one asked me well how old are you now, I told them and they said what year were you born, they did the math and I was wrong. Like you I felt like I got a free year, had some extra drinks to celebrate, I had it in my head for weeks and it was wrong. Well for fun today I am working on remodeling a bathroom, OK it's not really fun but needed.

  43. Wanted to share some things I learned over last few month around my HT. I'm sure many people already knew about those, but it was definitely an ah-ha moment to me. The topic was around the benefit of baffle wall, specifically around how it help control speaker boundary interference. This was one of the great articles I read that got me going on this adventure: http://www.acousticfrontiers.com/2013322baffle-walls/ I always thought baffle wall looked great, and although I read about boundary interference, I thought I didn't quite need to worry about it because I have all those traps etc. What got me looking into it more was after I finished my recent update (with added ceiling soffit and additional bass trap membranes), I still found that my LCR, particularly my Center had some noticeable nulls around 70 and 114Hz. Even with massive bass traps added, as well as playing with my sub EQ and reflection points on the wall, those were little improved. However, when I simply added a piece of 1/2” thick plywood that is flush with my La Scalas, the improvements were day and night! I included below a REW measurement of the response without the wall (pink) and one with (green) and you can tell the huge difference. The finish has bottom portion of the wall with 1/2” plywood fronted by acoustic foam between the La Scala. Top has 5” thick acoustic panels flash and behind are 2 2’x4’ bass traps hung on the ceiling/wall. So the space behind the screen is mostly filled. Net is, I think if you're able, having a baffle wall is worth looking into. It doesn't just look nice, but will make your HT sound even better!

  44. I wonder why Americans never want to start a political discussion... After all, that is the basis of democracy, wouldn't you agree? Strange... This lady, working for Cambridge Analycia, talks for 40 minutes about how her company aided President Trump. So, I you're right, she's lying all the time, she's making this up as she's standing there?
