A Tribute to Dusty Hill I “Just Got Paid Today” and decide to join the “Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers”. But first I bought me some “Cheap Sunglasses” and a fine Set of threads making me a “Sharp Dressed Man”. I was ” Waitin' for the Bus” but it was late because “Jesus Just Left Chicago” and was bound for New Orleans. So I called my “Manic Mechanic” for a new “Thunderbird” to pick up my girl “Francine” with those “Blue Jean Blues” and a “Pearl Necklace”. “She Loves My Automobile” and is my “Hi Fi Mama” while she “Heard It on the X”. I told her I was “A Fool for Your Stockings” with those “Legs” and Gimme All Your Lovin'” cause “It's Only Love”. But “She's a Heartbreaker” and wouldn’t go. “I Thank You”. I was ”Under Pressure”, and needed some “Tush” and dance that “Tube Snake Boogie”. So I headed to “La Grange” maybe the “Balinese” or Acuna for a “Mexican Blackbird” and a “Backdoor Love Affair”. I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide” and “ Lowdown in the Street” but wouldn’t ya know it, I was “Arrested for Driving While Blind”. Rest in Peace Dusty, thanks for the music.8 points

My first ZZ record was a "Best of" Realized later it was incorrect. Takes all their records to have a Best Of ZZ Top!5 points

Well have at it George! Glad your wife is feeling better and the boys are expecting the best. Takes a lot of pressure off everyone when that word rolls out. Crank things up and let it alllll go! I've been buried for 3 weeks here and have a big stack to jump on soon. It'll sort. Focusing my $ on some new tubes!4 points

Well here goes....Decision Made. At 57 I'm late to the tube experience and as much as I love my modified Hafler 500 I'm in love with the sound of my ST-70. I'm keeping it in the family so to speak anyway. Maybe the original Mullard xf2's that test like new along with the fresh new factory style circuit board and other components I replaced that breathed new life into this amp that sat idle for 40 years , just does it for me. This new experience sent me on the quest for Klipsch speakers knowing they could potentially be the perfect match. I knew I wanted a classic pair and discovered the Heritage series, specifically the Heresy IV which was the only new model in my budget. I sought out used but after auditioning the latest offerings I knew that if I purchased used I'd still be wanting the newer version down the road. Heresy sounded great but I wanted a bigger sound without subs. Forte sounded great too but the rear passive radiator presented a potential placement problem in my room. THEN ...I heard Cornwalls and wished I hadn't because that was the sound I wanted at the price I certainly couldn't afford. Even used their pricey and shipping ain't happening. I came to this forum and received great advice for which I'm very appreciative. I was ready to pull the trigger on Heresy IVs at 2200 shipped free, B stock. Thought I could resell them eventually easy enough and upgrade when feasible. I wanted that Klipsch sound and NOW...the impatient fool that I am. I knew the Cornwalls could be my last pair of speakers and I'd be totally cool with that . I couldn't spend 6500 but I could spend that 2200 for the Heresy's OR.....for less than 2000 buy what I needed from Crites and build Cornscala's type B. I ordered the kit yesterday and bought the Baltic Birch shortly after. Starting to cut the panels tomorrow and the kit arrives Friday. Not Klipsch but a tribute. Some will hate and I understand. I really did want the genuine artifact but I just couldn't swing the expense and wouldn't have been happy with anything that wasn't very close to the Cornwall sound. Here is a picture of their new home, room 14w x 20d. Boxed mains for the theater are recessed in wall to left and right of screen...sliding the new 2ch speakers out to the walls when watching a movie will be my weekly exercise. Thank you one and all and I'm sorry if any are offended ....I did come here seeking advice on Klipsch and came across this Cornscala concept at the end of the journey Regards, Jim3 points

1992 is getting into the better-sounding versions, so no worries there. If the squawker horns are marked K401, they're very likely genuine. As for the drivers, I agree with The Dude. Replace both drivers. Get the speakers sounding right and don't worry too much about their appearance. My La Scalas are the usual basic black, with a few scratches, but the Belles are another story. A Forum member from Missouri (IIRC) alerted me that the nearby University of Victoria was selling a pair of Belles on eBay. This Forum is great! You can not only find friends, sometimes you can find speakers. Bargain speakers! I won the auction, and they cost me a total of $675. I saw them for the first time when I went to pick them up, and they were rough, after spending 20 years in the University Music Room. As well, they had Neutrik connectors instead of a more common type. No matter! They sounded okay, and buying the corresponding male Neutrik connectors cost me under $15. BTW, the Neutrik connectors are a rare thing, a real audio bargain. I only wanted one speaker, to serve as the front centre channel and TV stand. I chose the less battle-scarred one and parked the other one in a corner. Having the TV on top makes some of the marks less noticeable, and the price was great, since single Belles are extremely rare, so you usually have to buy a pair to get one. In any case, I smile whenever I think of the price, and nobody has ever commented on the looks of the speakers, even though the one in use sits between a mint pair of La Scala IIs. Get the speakers and fix their driver needs right away. The cap replacement can be put off for now, and will give you a chance to get used to how they sound as they are. That will let you know what difference new caps make. As for their looks, they could be worse. I'm a perfectionist, too, but those speakers do deserve a good home, and they will serve you well until you can budget to get a pair of later models in nicer cosmetic condition.2 points

I've still got my tickets for the ZZ Top/Cheap Trick concert scheduled for last summer, the one that, along with many others, was cancelled because of COVID. I'll never see Dusty perform now, but it would be pretty heartless to whine about it. After all, I'm still alive.2 points

I don't think you are going to offened anyone. You made a great choice. Enjoy!2 points

Congratulations on your decision. I’ve owned Bobs cornscalas in the past too. The Cornwall IV is the better speaker hands down. But the cornscalas play big and bold and are a lot of fun. It looks like you have a beautiful room and they’ll fit right in there. Good luck. Shakey2 points

I’ve had Forte 2s for years. I’ve had them in large and small rooms and they’ve been great. I’ve found 6/10 inches off the wall and toed in slightly seems to be just right.2 points

I enjoy my Heresy IVs and would generally recommend them as first Klipsch. But from what you've been listening to, I'd recommend Fortes, as new as possible.. I have found the IIIs and IVs very pleasant and "real" sounding with roughly another octave of low bass over the H IVs.2 points

I made a software adjustment on my Node 2i and it appears I no longer have the static problems anymore. By disabling Clock Timing in the BluOS software there are no longer glitches between my Node and my Denefrips Pontus DAC- hope this is a permanent fix and not recurring. Playing directly from the Node using it’s built in dacs the static is not present but the Pontus sounds much better than the dacs in the Node. BluOS even says that the clock timing button may need to be turned off when using an external DAC. Saves me $2100 plus tax and having to try another streaming service.1 point

I hear you. That's true, and the vague, cryptic djs in the movies like Vanishing Point's Super Soul. We actually have more than the one I appointed with that moniker at the vinyl thread. Another particular gentleman that shows both the media and the ambiance of the evening at his abode presented with a palpable passion when he does visit. I'll take it as I can get it!1 point

Oh Man😢 Rest in Peace Dusty & thank you for "bringing it" to Charlotte for those half dozen times I saw y'all there at the Chrome Dome. To the BIG FANDANGO! & Don't ever think that time in Orlando that we did not love y'all too, but it was Skynyrd's home turf and Billy was cordial enough to acknowledge it. If my mother wags her finger at you up there, it just `cause I was on Yamaha & Klipsch, Jack & lumbo.1 point

It is very difficult to solder wire onto those banana jacks. They have a relatively high thermal mass(don't ask me how i know). if you don't get it hot enough to melt the plastic it is easy to make a cold solder joint. Even my TAD4002 drivers originally had terminals that looked like that. I would hacksaw those out of there and get replacements. Then use ring terminals to connect to the new ones Just the way I roll......1 point

@TubesGloThe Heresy II is a great speaker and I really enjoy mine, but I rarely use them. Last I used them we had rented a huge cabin in the mountains that had vaulted ceilings and they still sounded great and loud upstairs in the loft area. Didn't really need the bass. If you want the bass Cornwalls are the way to go, but the mids on LaScalas blow them away. There are going to be trade offs for whichever you choose. Personally I have not heard Fortes, but I know I don't care for a rear passive due to placement. My current setup I have LaScala and Cornwalls A and B powered with an Onkyo M-504. Mostly listen to the LaScalas. Rarely use my 2 subs.1 point

I would call Cory at Paducah home theater to buy new. Find a beat up pair of La Scalas and fix them up. Hard to beat full horn loaded Heritage. But Fortes would be good any year I think for space and sound.1 point

Might be perfect (and the right price) at your listening levels. But, I am not a big Forte fan ... tried to match them with K-510 horns and the Forte's were just "anemic." Haha; sold the Forte's. Think Heresies are too small for your room. Cornwall's or Khorns would be much better Have Heresies as "sides" and CW's as "rears" (with pro speakers as L/R) in a similar size room, so yes; familiar with them. As an alternative, I suggest you look at CF3/4's - perfect for jazz Add-on ... Epic info at1 point
-
Unless you are prepared to use a sub(s) with the Heresy, I think your best bet is a pair of used Cornwalls. Your room is about the perfect size for this speaker. And the best part is, you don't need them 3 ft. into the room. My room is similar in size to yours and I find they sound best about 20" off the wall. Look to spend around 1-1.5K for a pair in pretty good shape. Of course this depends on your location. Shakey1 point
