  1. Cruising in the car yesterday, listening to the local college station and this song came on. A first listen to them. This group knows how to make a tight toned Bass note. The Marias, Hush.

  4. I’ve run my Klipschorns for well over 40 years now and with many different combinations of amplification. I’ve used tube pre/SS power, all tube and all SS systems. My new system is a tube preamp and an SS power amplifier. This is by far the best these speakers have sounded and by a rather large margin. The amplifier design, construction and performance is absolutely amazing in so many unexpected ways. Nothing previously has come close and it was immediately apparent. The amplifier is not very well known as it’s made in Denmark out of the Vitas family. The Alluxity Power One Stereo Amplifier.

  7. For what it's worth, it's not unheard of that some loudspeakers have some degree of midrange peak in their response. In fact, it can be a characteristic related more to an intentional design objective than one that's associated with an anomaly, a problem, or some other negative attribute. I can of course can only speak for myself and my own values and objectives in terms of what I like to hear, and I can say that I've tended to not gravitate toward speakers that possess an overly flat, dynamically restricted, or otherwise disconnected response. I suspect I would argue that the perception of a bump, peak, or mild sharpness in the midrange was one of the most attractive aspects of the sonic signature of Klipsch speakers; and was what, when I first heard them (a pair of Heresies), got me just really hooked. I had heard some extremely expensive loudspeaker systems that just left me sort of....well...kind of bored. For me, music has a kind of organic life or quality that, when reproduced truthfully and realistically (let me qualify - I should say what TO ME - is truthful and/or realistic) will most definitely have peaks and valleys (topography, if you will). Speakers that were designed specifically to navigate or travel such musical territory rather than fill in the voids of the valleys or flatten or chop off the sharp peaks and tops of the mountains, which is what Klipsch speakers do (again FOR ME), are what make listening to music an adventure that puts me on the edge my seat in anticipation of what's going to happen next! Another consideration here, though, is the recording itself. I find that the nature of Klipsch (as well as my full-range Lowther drivers -- and others like them) is one that lays bare the recording, whether of poor or very high quality - which, once again, and in and of itself, boils down to nothing more than personal preference. I guess what I'm struggling to say here, and I apologize for the way a go off on crazy tangents (I feel bad for my old students when I was teaching -- though they did seem to enjoy it for the most part), is that in trying to ameliorate, iron out, repair, fix, change, modify, etc., etc., etc., we can sometimes end up, as another forum member astutely observed recently (sorry, I can't remember who he or she was right now) taking a step backwards rather than ahead; and, in solving one perceived problem, create a host of others that may be worse than where we started. And I am most definitely speaking from experience! I have made so many audio mistakes and blunders over these past decades, but I also most definitely made every effort to learn from them. OP: I don't know if these Heresy IVs are your first pair of Klipsch, but, just possibly, perhaps leave them as they are for a bit. With some time, maybe that peakiness you mention will soften on its own the longer you have the speakers. Or not! It's of course totally your right and prerogative to change anything as you wish, and no-one else's to tell you not to! Regardless, you have a great pair of speakers!

  19. No I am able to understand quite readily your post and would understand how your students were able to enjoy. Also, seems reasonable to have in the midrange valleys, peaks and the in-between. The topography is not a flat terrain typically. A desert plain can even have the occasional dune. And, if the saying that we live in the midrange is true, then would expect what you say to leave no doubt. Thanks...

  23. I would immediately replace the lascalas with something bigger from Klipsch like Khorns, Jubs, MCM. That would give a major immediate improvement without changing anything else. Changing a sub, a DAC, and amp..........that would not do what the above would.

  26. Backer boxes finished. Good first experience with applying Green Glue. Toughest part was cutting and fitting the drywall in the boxes. Ceiling speaker boxes Ultrathin recessed light fixture boxes: Combo boxes. These will accommodate both a speaker and a recessed light placed next to each other in one box . The sealant isn't pretty, but won't be visible. I plan to use the approach of mounting them with supports fastened to the ceiling channels. After doing the small replumbing job, I'll install DD + GG under the two HVAC supply runs and be ready to locate the backer boxes and finish the ceiling insulation. Then on to building one last bulkhead before running speaker wiring. I also need to run a LAN cable from my upstairs modem to the theater. What do you recommend? CAT 5, 6, 7, 8? I'm totally unfamiliar with network cabling and will appreciate your advice. It will be about a 50' run.

  27. Thought I'd update this thread. I haven't posted in a while..... I did drive to Texas and buy a second Klipschorn. A 2000 mile RT, for me! Had to hang out in Houston an extra day to allow hurricane Ida to pass....then headed home to Tampa / St. Pete. Original fabric is in pretty good shape. So these are a project.....and will have to be on the back burner for some time. The first one I bought has a P52 TruSonic woofer and the second has a 103LX TruSonic. Both are 4 ohm, I believe. The 103LX has a Red Back..... I'd kinda like to match up the Red TruSonic and have a pair. I've seen many woofers in Blue....but not in Red. Anyone know the difference? Anyone have one to sell or trade?

  28. I like to think that my flavor on things, others might enjoy. For a little while I was restoring the Pioneer SX 1250.. This was not for everyone, but it put a different spin on a older product! Everything was changed on this unit. Custom face plate with Aluminum side blocks, removed electroplate on the top of the faceplate along with the header that houses the buttons for a polished finish. Piano black finish....It's kinda what I want to do with the speakers... Odds are I might sell them when I am done. Will people enjoy them with what I see in my head for them is the question! I LOVE SEEING all of your restores and ideas that all of you have done with your speakers. I love seeing other peoples visions and work. I think most of us are in it for the love of music, that's pretty cool!!

  29. Yes. I use double Owens-Corning 703 fiberglass panels (total 4" thick each) in ATS Acoustic bags. They are placed across the room corners and are closed on one end (sitting on top of the TH-SPUD DIY subwoofers in each front corner). It's important that one end is closed off in order to make it a 1/4 wavelength trap (down to ~70 Hz based on the panel length). If you leave both ends open, then it becomes a half wavelength trap (i.e., 140 Hz). Chris

  30. Rich_Guy, That is great to hear. I installed RF-7 horn lenses and drivers over the weekend, and there is definitely a more expansive and open sound - even without changes (yet) to the crossovers. I have the RF-7 network schematic, and it's pretty straightforward to build, likely using the same board as the OEM RF-5 crossovers. I ordered inductors, caps, and a couple of resistors this morning, so looking forward to finishing this modification! There is a series notch/resonant peak filter across the driver (in parallel with it), which may or may not fit on the stock crossover board. If not, I can install it on a small board inside the cabinet, and run leads to the driver from it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts in this great RF series speaker! I agree that it's not just a good, but really kind of an astounding cost/performance ratio. Even with the RF-7 compression driver it doesn't seem overly bright or forward to me. It's the kind of sound I like, but I can easily install an variable L-pad in order to attenuate as needed, if needed. I used to run a Heresy center channel with both our K-horns and La Scalas in the past, and the person who sold me the RF-5s had a seemingly new and right-out-of-the-box RC-7, as well as a great SW-12 sub, and I bought everything - RF-5s, the RC-7, and the sub for $500. Far and away the best sound I have EVER gotten for such a modest price....and the 5s actually do incredibly well on their own without the subwoofer. The scale and expanse of the sound from these things is just so far beyond their physical dimensions -- IMO. They amaze me!

  33. Yes. 4722N. The come in a passive version (which I have) and a biamp version. As you go up in the JBL cinema line, they have some pretty serious systems and they are either biamped or triamped. The height on all of those is far too high for a residential listening room I feel, unless you are in platform raised theater seating.

  36. So far so good...but. The guy I bought it from didn't have any fluid left (just the empty Okki Nokki concentrate bottle) so all I had left was some ancient fluid from my 35-year old Discwasher D4 kit. I should probably get a better brush too. THEN after my wife goes to work tomorrow I can crank up a newly cleaned album. Tonight, though, I snuck in Andreas Vollenweider's "Behind the gardens..." album so she could get some sleep as it played. 😎 But that was cheating a little as my copy is in REALLY good shape to begin with. Just not a 1/2 Speed Master. The replacement micro-fiber strips for the arm seem a bit expensive for what they are. The guy I bought it from is close to Klipsch's HQ in Brownsburg, IN and has his own low-watt radio station (96.9MHz??). He says he up graded from this unit to an ultrasonic fir his Clearaudio TT. He said he didn't like the goat-hair brush that came with it as it would leave a bristle behind here and there.

  41. FYI only: it's been my experience that the frequency band 600-2500 Hz is where I see a rise in T30 values when measured at 1 m in front of the loudspeaker in a predominantly untreated room with loudspeakers having fairly good full-range directivity control, like the following: If you plug in 600-2500 Hz frequencies into the "QRDude" application, it might be interesting to see what results. 42. I have to sort that out first, because I only use raw Cables material as well as different connectors from Germany and get it from different suppliers. But I will work on it.In addition. You are using the NEMA 1 and 5 connector standards here and not the European standards.

  43. Color me interested, Looks like some great work. I request How about we show links to the parts used ? This way if someone were inclined to build a like piece they have at least a road map of where to start with supplies. I know when I try looking up wire or connectors it gets down right discouraging.

  45. Yep! That be some BIG JBL..... No doubt a very nice sounding setup there. The Speaker shop owner I do business with has something similar. He literally had the ceiling tile bouncing pumping a 19hz sine wave through them. Then he played some score from some movie through them, and the dynamic range was off the charts. I was mighty impressed.
