  12. Here's a better solution if you are building risers anyhow. If you want to build something that works and is cheap, built 2 of these Anarchy tapped horns and use them as RISERS under LaScalas. Use two of these amplifiers to drive them and leave the LaScalas alone. Stick the port end into a corner or against a wall behind each LaScala. Look at the RED curve which is what comes out of the mouth. Should cost less than $300 to do for both channels. REAL BASS at work, without added distortion. Plans are in the PDF by Little Mike. https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-SA25-25W-Subwoofer-Amplifier-300-782 Exodus Anarchy 25hz TH.pdf

  18. Poe - Control (Apocalypse remix Version), haunted LP more multi-tracking Dig me out; podcast 257 Poe Hello The 1995 debut Hello by Poe shifted from moody hip-hop to hymnlike piano to fingerpicking pop-folk with varying results As we discussed in our October roundtable episode on female artists of the 90s, 1995 was a historic year thanks to Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But Alanis wasnā€™t the only artist to make an impact. The New York Times noted in early 1996 about the debut album Hello by Poe and her ā€œmoody hip-hop to hymnlike piano to fingerpicking pop-folk.ā€ We revisit this eclectic record that features contributions from former Guns ā€˜n Roses drummer Matt Sorum, late hip-hop producer/artist J Dilla and Alice in Chains/Janeā€™s Addiction recording engineer Dave Jerden. http://digmeoutpodcast.com/episode/258-hello-by-poe

  20. Dennis never presented this solution as the best, just the most convenient with an audible improvement. When you can add a horn sub that is badly needed with any short horn you maintain a much lower INTERMODULATION Distortion than adding ports and air volume to the horn driver. If it's DIY, and you don't want to build the complexity of a horn, then at least build a separate sub with 18" drivers in a box, ported or not. Here's proof the I practice what I preach when it comes to using short bass horns down to 80 Hz. I did the same with my LaScalas when I had the room for TWO THTLP's, but had to sell them when I downsized my domicile. The subwoofer here uses an 18" JBL driver with lots of oompf down to 30 Hz. for music in my workout room. This is my "junk" 2.1 setup in the basement. And YES, it's time aligned within 1/20th of a wave at 500 Hz. Why the LaScala, even if the horn is folded, is my favorite Heritage speaker is because it's pretty close to TIME ALIGNED in the midrange where we live.

  21. The last one I recall coming out when I was still On The Hunt? In the early 80s (Insert bows head and shakes from side to side smiley)* thought I was smart enough to juggle two intimate friends at once.... Did we all think that way at that age? Worked about six weeks until I got busted. * where did the useful smileys all go? they came in a bunch of a couple dozen and covered it all )*&%it when windows xp was out.

  22. The LaScala bass modification is not half-baked, although a lot of opinions on this forum are. Yes, this is my opinion as well. Most people here give good advice, but in some cases, designs or topologies are not their favorite and instead of giving an objective view, they give a biased view, which does not steer a person who has limited knowledge in the right direction if they are asking about such. To get the full benefit from the LaScala bass modification, Dennis indicated that the high pass filter EQ was needed (and it is). I suspect most people who do modify their LaScala's do not use the EQ and this is where the "disappointment" may come in. Almost every speaker could benefit from a subwoofer, even some "subwoofers", if that makes any sense... I like a full music spectrum, but not everyone wants or needs much below 30Hz.

  25. This is what i thought of my early 2k's era Mac amp, it sounds exactly like you described and i've since moved to a 1991 built Accuphase P-360 and it's worlds different. I almost pulled the trigger on an MC402 previously. Would that be the way you would describe that amp too? I see most have it as a highly regarded amp in Mac's history. I was also near pulling the trigger on an MC7200 or MC7300, i don't remember but it was a direct coupled amp/no mac autoformer which is supposed to sound different from the laid back rolled off muddy sound. I already owned an MC7106(direct coupled) that can bridge to 320wpc and it's definitely better than the autoformer mac amp im selling, but i passed on the 7300 because i felt it was just my 7106 on roids. Accuphase build quality blew me away but McIntosh is so easy to service here if there is any issues. Are there amps you can recommend in the 2-3k range from the last 10-11 years you think sound night and day from their past eras? What makes them different? Quad balanced? Thanks

  32. I should have pointed out, the huge black cabinets are Klipsch MWMs with two fifteens in each. They are supposed to be horizontal, but I can't quite do that in the room. They are part of a club/theatre install. I have them connected to the LaScala crossovers where the single LS woofer would normally connect. Truly effortless, tight bass requiring very little power. Horns rule! They make the 55 inch TV look rather small.

  33. The Cornwall sounds more dynamic and in your face while the JBL comes across as more tonally accurate and natural. I slightly prefer the 4367 but can't even begin to justify them being 2.5x the price of the Cornwall.

  36. 1 is a resistor used in the midrange section. 2 is a 2uf cap in the tweeter section. 3 is what you would change out if that's the plan.

  37. Apples and oranges. The JBL is obviously a more technically sound loudspeaker but it has to be for the price and because it's a studio monitor. Literally a reference. Ideal for mid-sized control rooms or even HiFi if someone wants that dead on neutral sound. They sound great on pristine recordings like this but are not as forgiving with "normal" non audiophile stuff. Poorly recorded music (which let's be honest most stuff we like are) will sound terrible on them it will just make you want to listen to audiophile easy listening stuff all the time to admire the sound quality instead of music you actually enjoy and have an emotional connection to. The Cornwalls as their name implies actually sound better closer to the wall, the drivers and the whole sound just becomes more coherent as 1 unit closer to the wall and the low end disperses through the walls and the room better. They are more like a live event type sound, not neutral by any stretch but will do virtually anything well including HT. That is a terrible amp pairing for Cornwalls. Something like a MC152 or MA5300 would have been far better from McIntosh but I definitely prefer solid state with them for a weightier sound with more low end grip and less bloaty sluggish bass. Anything Class A or AB, Pass, Accuphase, Bryston etc. that's what you want for that energic, clean and clear sound. The new Mac stuff sounds soooo much better it's amazing. Mac's used to sound very warm and mushy just smothering detail. Their newer stuff, really anything made in the last 10-11 sounds completely different. I used the MA5200 for awhile in 2ch and it sounded amazing. Detailed, clean and energetic. I tried some of their older stuff from the 70s, 90s and early 2000s and it was terrible. Mushy, laidback and rolled off. But some people love that mushy warm sound. I just think their new stuff sounds 100x better, it's night and day in my experience. So their sound signature has changed quite a bit -- for the better. If you want that sound tube amps are 100% the way to go with a high quality SS pre.

  41. I was away from this for a few days... glad you got something affordable and also works great for you. So... this is what I have in our party room ( was a 2 car garage when the house was built). First owner made it the family room and it's about 21 x 20 with 10 foot ceiling. At the moment I'm powering with a Crown D-45, at 35wpc. Very clean, tight bass, and can play louder than you would want to.
