  4. A rather uncommon Lampizator tube DAC; Generation 5, level 4. S# 957. Digital board capable of 32 bit/380 kHz via USB. Rectifier tube, choke and (almost) electrolyte less power supply. High end mix of quality components including 3 JAN Philips and 2 JJ Tesla tubes with Jupiter caps. This unit has both balanced and RCA outputs. Balanced input, USB & SPDIF (coax) inputs. Dead quiet. To invoke the old descriptions from TAS, my friend described its sound like my red headed ex-wife: bold, dramatic and a bit dangerous. This is not a bespoke, polite DAC; it is allows the music to expand to its original recording. The current replacement model is a Baltic 3 at over $4000. Includes manual and power cord. No original box, but it will be packed like a tank. Please email any questions. Thanks. $1500.00 plus shipping.

  8. as Schu indicated, you're probably flying into John Wayne/Orange County Airport. Toss up as the distance from OC Airport to Whittier and from LAX to Whittier is about the same (in miles). I use to drive past that airport every morning on my way to work -- I lived in Huntington Beach back in those days. Traffic is unpredictable. I used to get off work at 2:30 and the 405 Freeway was already jammed. But, once I left at 5:00 to go to a Laker game and hardly touched the brakes the entire drive into the city of Los Angeles (okay, I admit that was a fluke and has only happened once in my life and I lived there for a VERY long time). Huntington is a nice beach city ... some good food, good pier to walk on, plus a paved bike/walking path. if you get in at 10, you can still get a rental car and drive into LA for the day and get to your hotel in Whittier by dinner. I've had to play tour guide for visitors before ... I took them wherever they wanted to go. Usual places they wanted to see was Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier, certain eateries that they'd seen on television. Once a friend wanted to go to a studio, so we went to NBC and did a tour then sat in the audience for a Jay Leno Tonight Show. if you want to go directly from OC Airport to your hotel, at that time of day, you should make it within an hour. It's only about 30 miles and a very easy drive -- little chance of getting lost. You'll take the 405 North to the 605 North and that will take you into Whittier. there is another freeway route to get you to the I5 freeway; but, that section of the I5 and me have a mutual dislike for each other. If you want to buy some inexpensive Christmas gifts, there is a section of Los Angeles called Santee Alley that is like a flea market and you can buy some clothing items and other stuff very cheap. Not sure how COVID has changed it though. I know people, with very large families, and go there to Christmas Shop because they save a ton of money. Probably want to avoid Disneyland, I heard yesterday that they've jacked up the entry price to $169. Zillion concert venues ... Universal Ampitheatre is close by; but not sure if there are any good concerts on your days there. VERY good Mexican food all over that area. When you fly in, pay close attention to the ships lined up for the LA/LB Port Complex -- I saw on the news the other day that there are now over a hundred container ships waiting to come into the port. I doubt they'll have the problem solved by the time of your trip. I remember once there were like 40 ships waiting and it looked insane, I can't imagine seeing 100 of them. Guess you could walk from one deck to the next all the way to Catalina Island.

  10. I bought some AW-650 outdoor speakers quite a while ago and would like to get them installed. Thought I'd ask here if anyone has ideas on where to mount outdoor speakers... directly on the eaves or up on the wall under the eaves? How close to outer walls? How far apart? I'm used to moving speakers and testing the results but since these have to be mounted and vinyl siding drilled this will be a "one and done" job. I want to get it right the first time! I've marked on the picture where I was thinking of mounting them horizontal... roughly 10 feet of space between the speakers mounted to the wall directly under the eaves. I don't know yet if I can mount to the eaves directly as I haven't identified the location of the rafters. The wall might be the more solid mount anyway. I'm planning on placing the woofer towards the outside (near the next wall) so the tweeters are closer to the middle. If I mount them on the wall or on the eaves will affect how I can rotate and adjust to a certain extent. Note in the picture that the left wall is not 90 degrees and flares out. Thoughts or comments?

  11. Pair of Klipschorn Speakers. This pair was built in the mid-90's. Still has original horns, woofers, and crossovers (AK-3 crossover). They still sound incredible! Speakers are in great shape but do have a few minor scuffs from moving. Speakers are located in Mesquite, NV. I am willing to deliver within 100 miles. Asking $2,300 **SOLD**

  12. I went back to beginning of August but didn’t see it. Prob long gone anyway. You did a post alert for a pair of RB 35’s on the Fl east coach ( which I almost bought) so you may be thinking of those? I prefer the 5’s because they were put together in Hope and nice wood veneer😉. Thanks for the heads up

  13. To me the beauty of ABX testing is if the ABX hardware is implemented well you can switch between 2 items you are comparing almost instantly and not know which is which. To me it is utter nonsense that after a half hour changing cables, switches, etc.etc.etc.... that you can count on your auditory memory to not fool you into believing that the gizmo you just hooked up that is shinier and prettier does not sound better.

  14. I agree! : ) I'll get around to doing the ABX test again before too long - for the full 25 trials. I started working out with a personal trainer about a month ago that also trains soldiers at the local Naval base and the pain he puts me through reminds me of the ABX test. From the QSC ABX manual. Sorry for the poor quality, but it's the best I'm aware of. Edit: after pasting the above from the QSC ABX manual, I got interested in figuring out the probability math and it turns out that my earlier ABX test where I got 8 right out of 11 trials results in a confidence of 92% that I heard a difference between the amps. If you are interested in the math I just added it to the original post.

  21. Hey Man ... Whittier ain't exciting -- any town USA; but you can always check out some sites before you head there. I suppose you're flying into LAX or Hollywood/Burbank? What are your interests? Touristy stuff? Walk down Hollywood Blvd, check out the crazy people at Venice Beach, Griffith Park Observatory is cool. What time do you arrive in LA? Hopefully early, if your plane lands from 3 to 6 pm, plan to spend your first 90 -120 minutes on sitting on the freeway. Let me know if you're looking for anything in particular ... a lot of stuff in that area. The beach isn't far from the airport if you just want to go hang out and get some sun before you head to Whittier.

  24. Greetings all! I recently purchased a pair of Forte llls, and these are the first Klipsch speakers I’ve ever owned. I’m also new to the forum, so I guess that makes me a triple newbie. I’m here to discuss and learn and look forward to both as a new member. A few months ago, my wife and I lost our home to a fire, and we are in the process of rebuilding. For the next few months, we are living in an apartment which isn’t the ideal environment for the Fortes, but I’m enjoying them none the less. I’m powering them with an upgraded Marantz 1060 and have an Oppo Digital CD/DVD player and a Fluance turntable that I haven’t been able to hook up yet. When rebuilt, my listening room will be approximately 6,000 cubic feet and should give the Fortes an opportunity to really shine. When I auditioned them in the store, they were being driven by an upgraded 125 wpc Adcom fronted by a cheap receiver (the store owner’s description). I was totally blown away by how detailed and live they sounded even at a very moderate volume. I don’t typically listen to my music loud, but I do love detail and a great soundstage. Even in the apartment, I’m getting some of that with the 1060, but not like I did in the larger listening room at the store with a more powerful amp. I don’t anticipate making any equipment changes before I’ve had a chance to hear what everything I currently have will do in my home, but I’m going to enjoy following the forums to learn what others have learned and done. The journey is just beginning. I look forward to being part of the community.

  25. Hi, wondering if anyone has tried any high end digital streamers, or DDC’s and noticed a worthwhile difference. I’m using a Bluesound 2i with Terminator 2 Dac. Very noticeable improvement over laptop and previous Orchid Dac. I love so much about horns, but smoothness doesn’t seem like a chief attribute of horns. Trying to increase smoothness without adding a veiled or muddy sound. I rotate between a Pass XA25 and FW F3, with and Aric Audio 6sn7 pre. Just looking for experiences with high end digital front ends. Ted

  28. Heh, the picture makes the deck look decent but it is due for replacement. I need to tear it out and see what kind of rot I might have at the rim joists where the deck attaches. I'll have nice music while we work at least!

  29. @joeward, definitely enjoy the Belles for now, but when you get the motivation to do some tinkering…go bi/tri/amp and active with the crossover. It was a steep learning curve for a non-tech minded person like myself, but getting them even close to dialed in made them sound so much better than they did with passive alone. I thought the bass was non existent and midrange had some nasty sounding areas. They just sounded very boxy and distorted. The active crossover really improved all of this. In the end I did sell them as I just liked the simplicity of preamp and monoblocks on my chorus II. And my old McIntosh tube preamp does not match with the ss amp I was using on the bass bins and I just can’t give up that preamp. But boy the Belles are much better to look at than my Chorus.

  35. Hi, You're welcome for research, it's the Klipsch community forum effect ✌️ Here on the McIntosh brochure says 22 "deep, as you saw at the resellers, but that's with the front panel buttons and rear cables connected. MA5300 Integrated Amplifier Brochure But this is an approximate and estimated value depending on the cable used; in my opinion they get 22 "by putting banana plugs on the connectors of the speakers. And in any case it is always possible to mount angled cables, especially the mains power supply, with forks or bare for the speakers or the XLRs which are often those with the longest sockets: all are available in shallow depths, for example for professional rack mounting: where space saving is important. example Well, the main thing is to have the drawing of the amp to reflect its size, as in the manual

  38. Not true in my listening room. 😎 But there are acoustics differences that loudspeakers having "full range" directivity in-room have over what the guy that you mention doesn't listen to. Three properties are needed to hear phase in-room: 1) loudspeakers having excellent directivity control down to ~100-200 Hz, 2) loudspeakers having essentially flat "excess phase" response, 3) room treatments (mostly absorption) just around the loudspeakers--within the first 3-6 feet (1-2 metres) that significantly reduce early reflections within the first 4-8 milliseconds from the direct arrivals from the loudspeakers, and no acoustic reflectors around the listening positions. ...then you can "hear phase" in my experience. More on that subject here: Chris

  40. My introduction to Pink Floyd came in the back of a carpet padded van with a 6x9 speaker in every corner, a significant measure of THC coursing through my veins, and the cash register from "money" spraying coins across an imagined landscape. I was hooked. To Plink Floyd. My favorite song is the current stand out at any particular point in my lifelong journey of exploration of their work. My current favorite is "Fat Old Sun", from the 1970 album "Atom Heart Mother".

  41. I had the fortunate opportunity to meet "the man" himself - Roger Waters. For me DSOTM "IS" a "track". However I must admit I'm very partial to That Great Gig in the Sky with Clare Torry on vocals. Another related fav is Roger Waters Amused to Death What God Wants Parts I II & III Echos is a great "creepy" song. When I was having a cardiac ablation, waiting for the anesthesiologist, the nurse asks what kind of music do I like. I said Pink Floyd. She turns on the Pink Floyd radio channel. After a while Echos starts playing (it's what, 20 minutes long?). And I'm thinking "Oh God, no. I hope this is over before they put me under!!"

  42. Echoes is great, as well as Learning To Fly. And you can't go wrong with The Great Gig in the Sky. Actually, Pink Floyd has so many great songs that it's hard to select a top three, or even a top ten, for that matter. Everyone will have their favourites.
