  2. Today we had a beautiful autumn day. I was out with the leaf blower, cleaned the rose beds. Then I have already received orders for speaker cables again. Yesterday I had cooked chicken soup , which was enough for 2 days. Now I have to listen to Tangerin Dream´s " Force Majeure " 1979 , it´s a clear cut record , excuse the bad condition from the cover , I bought this record in june, twentyseventh in 1980 so this record is almost 41 Years old. Sounds pretty good .......

  3. You should know better ‘Heel. Both of us are too old to risk a ladder mishap. Although I did climb my 24 ft. extension ladder for some interior work, I not only didn’t like doing it I knew I shouldn’t have. If you can buy fancy Dan tubes for your hi-end tube amp you then can pay someone for your high wire work. Much, much cheaper than a catastrophic fall. And beside, you still owe toasters to several people, me included. Falling from a ladder is poor excuse to get out from under a toaster debt. .

  7. 4 beautiful young women came across a deserted pond. They decided to go skinny dipping. The owner of the land was out working in the field and heard laughter. He grabbed his bucket and went to see the commotion. Upon arriving, one lady yells, "We aren't getting out till you leave!" The farmer yell's, "Oh I didn't come to make you girls get out, I came to feed the alligators!"

  9. As we all know, the world of audio marketing is full of blather, lies, scandalous mis-representation and a host of other scams, flim-flams and cons. Here's the latest to amuse me. A $5,600 (gee-what a deal!) record clamp. The price alone is an assault on the senses, but the verbiage to justify the price is both hilarious and nonsensical. Enjoy: "A legendary Shun Mook product now being made in very, very limited numbers. This record clamp is made from extremely rare pieces of dried ebony briar. The extra heavy century old ebony root which were immersed in the swamps of Africa has a unique power that no other wood possesses. The vibration generated by the diamond stylus in the vinyl groove besides inducing an electroflux through the phono-cartridge also excites the ebony molecules, causing it to resonate. This in turn is feed back through the stylus and is reproduced as expanded sound staging, enhanced separation, sharpened focus and enriched tonal balance of the music. "

  14. In the fall of 2019 my Father-in-Law dropped off a Sansui TR-707A Transistor Stereo Tuner Amplifier as one channel was very weak knowing there was a chance I'd be able to diagnose and fix whatever fate this amp suffered. Over the past two years I'd occasionally open it up, chase down a lead, and then give up when a more interesting/less challenging project came along. It was always hanging out in the back shelf of the workbench, looking at me with sad puppy dog eyes but knowing it would be a possibly pointless road to go down I hesitated. Fast forward to six weeks ago when a friend dropped off his NAD C356BEE which was DOA - he fried a few resistors/diodes/capacitors due to a speaker short. Once I had it up and running again I hooked it to the Heresy IIIs in the main system and was duly impressed. I was a little too close minded running my Elekit TU-8200 to think solid state could sound so nice! So I took it upon myself to consider the Akitika kits before realizing I might get the 34 pound beast in the basement working for much less money and have a good story. A little background gleaned from the internet and my wife's recollection of childhood stories came to a reasonable conclusion: my father-in-law purchased the unit from the base PX in Vietnam and the serial number appears as a 1965 date code so it matches up. From the on-line manual this is an 18WPC Class AB transistor amplifier and apparently was the first transistor amp that Sansui exported (it also has a really interesting (to me) topology but that isn't my strongest knowledge so feel free to read up on that. My troubleshooting discovered that there was no signal reaching the outputs so I started working backwards reflowing solder points. As the pots were scratchy I took out the can of DeOxit and sprayed down the pots which addressed the scratchy sound on the working channel but I was still left with a single channel amp. I began playing with signals and determined that the offending channel was working, again, nothing to the output. I even pulled the power transistors and determined all four were in spec - I was happy to find that as the transistors are long since out of production and there aren't any easy replacements or NOS units available that I can easily find. Going on a whim I checked a handful of capacitors and found one on the offending channel was reading as an open circuit. I'm not an electronics whiz in the least, but I like buying stuff to feed my audio addiction and who doesn't like assembling a bill of parts and getting stuff in the mail? I assembled a list of 74 capacitors for the pre-amp, amp, tone control, and power supply circuits and 22 hours after ordering from Parts ConneXion the box arrived. I pulled the replacement caps for the one that read open (and its channel twin), the iron, and....SHE SINGS! I've since gone through and replaced about a third of the caps on the pre-amp board and a handful on the output side. I'm doing this piece meal - one cap per channel per operation, then plugging everything in to check. The workbench system consists of a CD player and KG1s (rebuilt crossovers in those). How does it sound? I really like it. The bass control offered is out of this world. The treble is clear and well defined and reveals a few details I had not heard in music previously, although it seems to be hot - I have it turned down slightly on the tone controls. Channel separation is as expected given the specifications (abysmal by today's standards) and imagining is fairly poor to non-existent. The hiss during song breaks is noticeable. Even the tiny little KG1s have great bass weight and extension to them. I'm really impressed with this beast. Future work: 1) Finish the preamp recapping project, move on to the output recapping, and the power supply recap (power supply is first on the list to be honest). I also have capacitors for the tone controls and might get to that. 2) Replace the speaker terminals. Currently uses a slotted screw which accepts spade connectors, I'm replacing with 5-way binding posts. 3) Replace the RCA jacks. The built in RCA jacks have a flare, pushing out the sleeve of any connector attached. 4) Replace the non-polarized power cord with either a polarized two-prong cord or a grounded IEC cable. There isn't enough room to mount an removable plug so I'll hardwire the IEC power cable. 5) I've been unsuccessful in tracking down a replacement knob cover for the balance pot; my back-up plan is to slide the volume knob over to the balance pot and go with an aftermarket knob for volume that is consistent in appearance of the unit. 6) Replace the rubber feet on the outside of the case which have deteriorated due to age. 7) Trouble shoot the lights - while all lighting is functional it is not very bright. As much as I like this amp, if my father-in-law wants it back I'll let him have it. But I really hope he doesn't.

  18. Since we're in a Klipsch forum... I've dropped Klipsch woofers into the rear deck of my e46 BMW & figured out how to put other Kilpsch speakersin the doors without cutting metal. The only thing I wish Klipsch made is a 2.75" midrange speaker. This is only the rear speakers before the doors were installed and the head unit really needs to be replaced. It sounds flat to me.

  21. Thanks for the kind words, and @jcn3 - more guts shots for you. Last night I decided to put this back on the bench and do some more work. I'm old enough to know my eyes aren't great in the evening after looking at screens all day so I decided to focus on some of the bigger caps on the output side. I'm always impressed with how small modern capacitors are - for example, the pre-amp circuit has a dozen or so 30uF caps in voltage ratings 6V, 10V, 16V, and 25V that for simplicity in the Bill of Materials are all now 25V rated (and for future consideration, are all 33uF as good luck finding a 30uF cap). The output side has a handful of 500uF / 25V caps (now 470uF/25V) and 200uF / 25V (now 220uF/25V) axial caps that are spanning between terminal strips that now look comically small and have resulted in using some hook-up wire and heat shrink tubing on leads. I looked further at the speaker terminals - my parts bin had a "ganged" set of binding posts (red/black) with 3/4" spacing that was too narrow to fit; but in a "light bulb" moment I realized that the L/R binding posts were spaced vertically 3/4" - so the binding posts were disassembled and will be installed in a black/black and red/red pair (speaker terminals are mounted on plastic and the gang holding the posts is plastic. After doing the output section I decided to do some work on the pre-amp section. I thought to myself "I shouldn't do this - my eyes are tired and I can't focus and even the 3.0x magnifiers aren't cutting it" [I'm in my late 40s so yeah, getting old sucks] but I did it anyways. After doing one cap on each side with much difficulty (I was heating the wrong solder point - first sign of I should have stopped) I powered up to static only to realize I hooked up audio cables wrong when rearranging the workbench. But even on fixing it I got some "pumping" in the audio chain so....I stopped. I had been heating a B378A transistor pad so I was worried I fried one, but....Before work this morning I powered up the system to just check the pumping sound and it was gone....so who knows. Maybe the transistor overheated and took some time to cool. Might have a long meeting at work today that I can shop around for either NOS or replacements (looks like an AC152 or AC153 might do the trick). I also need to get some hot glue sticks. My kids used it to make their Halloween costumes this year and apparently got glue happy. - but I need to put some dabs down to hold some of the new caps in place. I also plan on revising the install of the two blue caps. Going to leave the monsters they replaced in the board, but hot glue them down and heat shrink the leads.

  22. Need to finance a new set of Jubs to replace my underground Jubs. Yea, you want photos, that will come forthwith (when I get a round tuit) and I know that you are a bunch of cheap skates like me. But I THINK these prices are not too far out of line. PM if you want to discuss please Location is 78414 Price is pickup but I will entertain help (labor) with shipping. CT-650-T in white new in box (never opened). I used one pair but not the other. $350.00 One pair black KI-396-SMA II. No boxes. Purchased as a trio with the third modified by the factory to be used as a center between the Jubilees. The 'used' pair for sale (yes, I connected them as surrounds for a few minutes) just didn't fit in the room. $2000.00 Cornwall IIIs in walnut ... this is for a set of three. I used all three as the front LCR for surround duty but since moving into the new place with the Jubs one pair is used for my bedroom system and the third is relegated to closet storage...no boxes. $3500.00 for the three Parasound P-6 preamp and A23+ amp. Have boxes and have been used for approx an hour while I was testing rooms to see if I could make a dedicated Parasound / Jubilee room. I found I didn't have a second room to support that. I have a second A23+ amp that has indeed been used at some gatherings and now power my outdoor speakers but it's not the one offered (just in case you have seen me with these and think oh, that's BS he has used them). $2000.00 for the P6 and A23+ combo in factory packaging. SOLD Boxes you ask? Well for 30 plus years I held on to every box for electronics I had purchased. When I bought this place I scrapped everything I didn't have a immediate need for which included boxes out the azz.

  23. Given the option, I would choose unengraved black at a premium for any speaker that has the grilles off. And for me, that is pretty much any speaker in rotation. The silver looks wicked on my LSI Splits though! I owe the two members who nudged Dave in the right direction here a beer. Can you mail a can of beer?

  24. That is an awesome statement and though I don't think I will be owning a set anytime soon (come on lotto numbers), I will say I am glad to be around as this is happening. Hopefully either my kids or grandkids will own set and I will be able to tell them the story of when they were released.

  26. Klipsch has policy on selling proprietary parts. They may only sell these to registered AL5 owners as a replacement. Someday they may offer a complete upgrade. But been a while since seeing these kits. The Well documented B&C DE120 is a drop in replacement. The Citation driver now used by Klipsch (reported by people who have seen them) may require crossover adjustments. Crites and DaveA sell horns with these drivers. Installing them made a huge upgrade in my LSII. The new ones used by Klipsch might be even better though.

  30. I had recently learned to check every so often. Had Farmers for the longest time, no issues, not claims, occasional minor increase. About 2 years ago, we finished the basement and made some nice home improvements that with the rise of the housing market we knew our value was going up (tax assessment increased over $40k in one year). With our daughter starting to drive, we decided to shop around. Ended up with USAA with more coverage, better deductible, and lower rate.

  37. I was and still am considering a tube pre, the Freya+. My system also does home theater duty but with an emphasis on 2-channel stereo, but it has to integrate with TV and movies as well. The Freya+ does home theater passthrough and it has a passive mode that can bypass the tube stage. So it's always been on my short list if I decide to go separates.

  40. I agree totally George. I just don't get it anymore but who am I to put a spin on other gear. I'm happy in my own skin and that's all that matters. I've thought about changing but then I look at 60 years of every spare nickel and dime sitting here. Just can't cause that stuff just doesn't work. They can argue every point but I'll never change. @billybobI've thought that too many times but they seem to always get it to me on time somehow. What's a day?? hahahaha

  41. Had a stand up guy from work who was 58. He was a special deputy, ems certified, township fire department and everything else you could ask for. Great guy. Decided to put a ladder up in a maple tree and trim a couple branches off. Long story short he did everything right yet fell about 15 feet and hit a couple limbs on the way down. One of them broke his neck. I'm 72 and tarheel is 73. Not in my job description but if your available...

  43. As a salesman I'm going to of course go along with the idea that the new ones make the old ones sound cheap but I mean, I'm in sales lol. The old ones are no slouch so I wouldn't be quick to be embarassed or whatever about only having those. Of course the low extension is obvious and expected but the old ones can still take your breath away in some scenarious, like literally, it feels funny to breathe if you're really spanking them. I did notice that the new ones sounded quite a bit bigger especially with certain instruments like snare drums. The new ones are the most realistic snare drums I have ever heard. So there's that. The blending is the biggest improvement in my opinion. The 402 effortlessly meshes up with the bass bin in a way that the old ones struggled to do. There are other differences but those are the biggest things I can notice.
