  2. @henry4841 Your Sony is a beauty! This is my 1973 Marantz 1060. I bought it in 1974 and used it for several years. In the late 80s, I replaced it with a Denon integrated then later with a Rotel multi-channel system. A few years ago, I thought I might sell it since I wasn't using it. I pulled it out of storage, cleaned it up, and replaced a switch that had gone bad. The walnut case had dried out a bit over the years so I cleaned it, gave it a once over with some 0000 steel wool, then a few coats of finish oil. Other than the worn screen printing over the Power button, it looks great. So great that I decided to keep it with plans to someday re-cap it. I finally tackled the rebuild a couple of years ago with new/larger caps and replaced the output transistors at the same time. My brother-in-law has a stock 1060 of approximately the same vintage and we put them together one day so we could A/B them to see if we could really tell a difference. We could, and it was pretty amazing. The upgrade turned this already good amp into something special and I've been using it since. I don't plan to let this one go.

  3. Mine is on the way. It's replacing a Topping PA3s(which btw sounds extremely good) that replaced my Musical Paradise tube amp a few months ago. So far I don't miss the tube amp at all and I thought I liked tubes. Then again I used to like vinyl. Topping is keeping secrets about the technology involved, I'd really like to see a tear-down. It'll be a few weeks 'till it arrives and I will give my impressions then.

  4. Curious about these economical small powerful Class D amps. Would like to try but don't want to pop my bubble and have to part ways with my tube amp, it's part of my identity. Really like my Topping E30 DAC, it has made digital listenable for me.

  6. Sounds MELOdic to me brother! I'll take your word for it. I have to totally be in a different place before I pull some of that out. MELOdic is right though!

  7. (1) Topping PA5 Review (Amplifier) | Audio Science Review (ASR) Forum I've seen this little beast mentioned here I believe. ASR got their hands on it, we have nearly AHB2 performance here for $350. Incredible. Couple this with their matching balanced DAC and you have quite the combo for any Heritage speaker pair. This little combo was basically made for us lol.

  8. So...my father-in-law reclaimed ownership of his Sansui TR-707 I restored so I was left with a desire to scratch my solid state itch. A couple days of patient browsing led to a two month old listing for a Harman Kardon 430 at a dusty record store I'd never heard a 30 minute drive away. Yeah, sure it had some issues but I figured a drive was in order and sure enough, it was still on the shelf. Being the day before Thanksgiving I didn't even negotiate but still got a discount. Opening her up, few spritz of DeOxIt fixed all the sticky buttons and scratchy pots, but a few caps showed the unmistakable signs of age. Replacing the puffy caps with some Elna Simlic IIs I had sitting around in the proper values (side note: I'm now that guy - "let me check the parts bin, I think I have what I need, oh, look at that!") and plugging her in....wow. Been playing now for a couple days with the Heresy IIIs and I'm in love. My poor Elekit TU-8200 sits forlorn like a spurned lover as the middle-aged solid state beauty sings with the voice of a Siren. Dare I say my father-in-law can keep his Sansui - the H/K has it beat in every metric. Planning on replacing a few more caps and the transistors, but to be honest that is fixing problems that aren't there (yet). Obligatory photo below because I can't get enough of this glow...

  9. The Sony & the 1060 look great. Here's my Marantz 1060. I purchased this about 12 months ago from the "States". It had been totally refurbished with all new caps, resistors, everything cleaned & a new black faceplate. I used to drool over these back in the 70's, but couldn't afford to buy one. It sounds better than I remember them & can hold its own with any of the new more modern designs.

  10. Class D is the wave of the future. I expect A/B amplifiers to diminish in sales and offerings except in the high end market.

  14. They purchase parts knowing the specification needed so that the inductor will not saturate under normal use, say up to 100 watts. The iron core vs air core was a no brainer for them really, the price is cheaper and there is less DCR for better damping. If they did get an air core with the same DCR and inductance it would be huge and expensive for no benefit. The problem is someone reads somewhere that air core does not suffer the same core interaction problems and so they are superior. Although this is true, it is much more prudent to just use an iron core inductor where it is sized appropriately to not saturate the core. You end up with the same low distortion signal but with lower DCR and for less money which the savings is passed onto the consumer. It's the same as someone reading that silver has a lower resistance vs copper. Yes this is true but instead of purchasing a silver cable it is much more prudent to just increase the size of the copper conductor and you will lower the resistance much more than just using silver. So a 14awg copper speaker cable, non-engineer says I know more than everyone because silver has less resistance so I am going to use 12awg silver. Besides even the cost of silver going with a 12awg copper will yield a lower resistance than 14awg silver. I know, why not just use 12awg silver cable, here is where price comes in, it is cheaper to just go down to 10awg copper. And don't say you will purchase 10awg silver cables, that is ridiculous but the same argument keeps going in circles, just go to an 8 or even 6awg copper conductor. Jumping up a size in copper is always better than switching conductor material. The layman says silver has lower resistance vs copper so it is better, you can't tell me otherwise. An engineer asks what are we trying to do? Lower resistance. Ok, well we could use silver but that is expensive and doesn't gain us much or we can just jump up a size in copper conductor and lower the resistance. The latter is the better way of doing it of course but don't tell an audiophile that, silver is always best so if you don't use silver you are not hearing your stereo at it's best.

  17. Well maybe someone from here was the winning bidder. Bidding was very slow until the last 2-3 minutes, when the price jumped 2k-2500 in the last 5 minutes. Hammer price was $6500 +up to 13% buyers premium. Oh well. I'm not quitting; just have to keep looking/watching.

  18. Rach's second symphony is wonderfully MELOdic... :-)) Have had this record for a while, but only today listened to it after reading about it on Wikipedia. Azhkenazy is a formidable pianist, but here he's conducting. Decca is an amazing label. I never hesitate buying their records.

  21. Great album right there George! Just got the cabinet delivered and the wall is FULL. Maybe I've got about 6 inches left total. 3/4inch oak plywood w/solid oak sides and 5 oak shelves. Gonna have to shim the back up an inch to eliminate that backwards lean it has. hahaha Aside from that it's gonna work. $35 and I gave him $50 for brining it over since it's about 40 miles round trip for him. Gonna work just fine til it's full. 😂 Ewwwww, just realized now I won't have much room for a larger flat screen tv. Now THAT sucks! lol

  24. Although the stickers are removed, I believe these are Klipsch KLF-20's. Great shape, work well. Local pickup only. In Fountain Hills, AZ (close to Scottsdale, AZ). Asking $800 for the pair. KSF-10.5's, KLF-C7 and KV3's below: Also have (I believe) are a pair of KSF-10.5's. The foot on it is broken (pictured), but rests fine. We're going to be repairing at time of this post, but want full disclosure that one foot was repaired. But, sits level even though foot is off. Speakers work great. Asking $400. KLF-C7 Center Channel speaker is available. Great shape, works great. Pictured below. Asking $250. KV3 Center Channel speaker (oak) is available. Great shape, works great. Pictured below. Asking $200

  27. No I have the Pa3s, it's pretty good. I switched out all my tube amps in three different systems for small form factor class d stuff from China and have been happy so far. I had been considering going all out with Hypex or Purifi but this new PA5 might scratch that itch. I also have two Topping E50 DACS which I am very satisfied with.

  28. i sent the seller a message & asked about the weight, its hard to tell in the pics but looks like the weight is there, its the small black disc in the center. he said he reused the weight from the original passive & has done a few of them with the SS recone kit & they are excellent quality.

  33. Ok, here is how it currently looks: I was afraid that putting absorption will decrease the subjective width of the soundstage and decrease the liveliness. But the soundstage now feels even more wider, highs are even more pronounced which will have to be dealt with the housecurve (speakers are EQed flat 1m on axis currently) and the amount of detail that has emerged after those treatments is kind of spooky - can't think of any other word. I moved the speakers into the room away from corners about 30cm in AND installed traps across the corner - maybe this is the reason low end is kind of lacking. I do not have a lot of experience listening to high quality setups. This is probably the closest I have ever approached to a "quality setup", but I haven't heard a system that is so crisp, detailed, so loud and images as great as this. Will get back with the measurements later today.

  35. Pretty sure I have read on the forum that the R indicates a Klipsch warranty or replacement part. I don’t have the link so take this with a grain of salt. Well Randy beat me to the keyboard, but seems I may have been correct. Holy affirmation, Batman!

  36. Thank you Billybob, I'm going to spend a few hours time listening to them tomorrow. I have some good caps on hand If I decide to recap them. I am going to mess with the finish on the bottoms tomorrow to see if I can remove some of the stain put on before repairing the veneer chips. Somewhere in my shop is a small collection of Klipsch Birch from old cabinets that were salvaged so maybe I can make some work to improve the looks. also have some Mid driver Gaskets to put in. Also picked up a few old Pioneer receivers in the deal so more stuff to play with.

  42. I'm currently reading The Count of Monte Cristo. I'm not sure how I made it to 68 without having read it. The style and language make it a challenging read so I've taken a couple of breaks with lighter fare like selections from Terry Pratchett's Diskworld series.
