  1. Went and got a covid test this morning as I've been a little under the weather and had strep throat recently. We're having company tonight and wanted to be sure all was good. Tested negative so the party is on. On the way home I picked up a Bookers and a Weller 12 so the morning wasn't a total waste.

  2. I've always done ham, blackeyes, turnip greens and cornbread for New Years Eve. Then some foreigners ruined smithfield, the only brand of store bought pork I have ever bought in my entire life. Their ham isn't salt cured anymore. No I don't like Country Ham that much either except in a good biscuit then I have to scrape the excess salt off. So It doesn't really impart a salty flavor... but without that process the ham tastes awful. In my state of being a germ-freak since the new filter I haven't found any local brands that I really trust to use their pork products. But it's going to be good eating anyhow, got chili simmering and an egg-nog base in the fridge since I can't get Promised Land's real & not from a test tube nog at the stores here. ALL the others are just gross, mine's got *six ingredients plus Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve in it! Didn't have it for Thanksgiving or Christmas so this is my last chance and I'll see if I can catch a game on youtube.

  3. I have admittedly a strange set up in my box room. I have Heresy II's, a DJ set up and a tube amplifier which is an Icon Audio ST40. This Christmas I put my speakers at ear level having read some posts on this forum of the benefits of bringing up the speakers on tables to improve the quality of sound. Im all good apart from one thing as the mid section is so much better I've lost my bottom end. I know Heresy speakers aren't great for sub base, however I'm happy to improve with a small sub. Preferably a Klipsch one if I'm honest, can anyone recommend anything ? My tube amp would need to have speaker interconnects, and the room is so tiny I don't need a big sub. Just something to bring out the bottom end so it's noticeable. Any ideas or recommendations?

  5. Did someone say "Yamaha?" I've always been partial to the silver faces and elegant knobs/levers of the '70s and '80s hifi gear. I've posted these pics in a couple of other past threads but am more than happy to repost for those who may have missed them earlier. My CA-1000 was purchased along with my 'Scalas back in '76 and is still in service today albeit with a repair here and there through the years. The CA-2010 was bought 2nd hand several years ago, restored, and powers the Klipsch "R" towers at the back of my listening room. I had been using a Carver C-4000 Pre to control the two Yam amps... ... but now use the VTA SP-14 to do the signal work. The last piece of "vintage" gear I own is sadly relegated to storage or forum articles as internet streaming has made the tuner rather obsolete. On top of the Pioneer TX is a Bic BeamBox indoor antenna - anybody remember those ?!? And that's my "show-n-tell." Thanks for reading - happy listening and Happy New Year !!

  11. ... my tonearm must be bent. Backstory, Bought a new Project Carbon from Needledoctor four years ago to take advantage of my record collection. Had my Epic 2s refurbished by Bob and found a replacement tweeter from a user here, thank you again! Bought a new Rotel Amp since my vintage Kenwood fried my XOs last power up in 2008. It all came together and I was reluctantly happy. It sounded hollow. Detail was outstanding but horn was harsh and it lacked warmth and richness in mids and very light on bass. Not how the epics should sound at all. Is it the new XOs from Bob? New Amp not paired right? New TT or cartridge issues? So many variables with all new gear to check. So eventually I got around to messing with tracking force without help from a scale, tried new platter mats, bought a sub and finally got it sounding somewhat good. Still not overwhelmed though. Fast forward four years, bought a digital scale and checked tracking force. Should be 1.8. It was 1.64. Dial on arm says 1.8. Balanced arm again and set dial to 1.8 again. Scale read 1.64 again. Set dial on arm to 2.0. Scale read 1.65. Moved dial to 2.2. Scale read 1.58. Dial 2.6, scale 1.4. The most tracking force I can get is 1.74 and dial is set on 1.6. When I screw the weight up the arm to add weight to stylus it actually lightens the tracking force. Something is not right but I can say gaining that 1/10 of a gram made a world of difference in sound. Mids are there and bass is deep and resonating and the harshness of the horns subdued. I can finally dial the tone controls up and give it some space between them. Since new I've never been able to set bass to 0 and treble to 3 or 4. To harsh. Now it sounds so much better. I've tried numerous times to get VTF correct and same story as above each try. Visually the arm where the weight attaches inclines slightly past the gimbal. That doesn't seem right and you can barely see it unless your looking for a reason. Needless to say I'm slightly overwhelmed now by sound quality but I know it can be better. Having the ability to change cartridges and set everything right is a necessity so the new 1200gr is ordered and should be here between tomorrow and 2024. Haha Lesson learned though,, never trust the dial on arm to set VTF. Invest in a digital scale. They are cheap and could have prevented me from keeping a TT that arrived defective not to mention the years of not quite right fidelity.

  13. Reminds me of all these guys that came in to the shop for dynomometer testing/tuning. They were sure their motorcycles made "X" amount of horsepower. When they found out what it actually put out they were so disappointed. Up until then they were happy. Did sell a lot of motor work though.

(Tell me the last time you heard that... with an m in there) It popped up earlier today and had me holding my sides for a couple minutes! Hope to be one of them soon, I've got one based on the "looks" of the Linn with updated guts that worked extremely well the last couple years.

  26. I bought a KA5500 a couple of years ago for my daughter. Someone had replaced the original speaker clips with RCA plugs and done a pretty weird job of wiring them, but I was able to figure it out and made her custom speaker wired to work. It's a sweet little amp.

  33. I recall that RCA rated their early 1960s top-of-the-line console stereo at "500 watts". I found the amp schematic in the RCA Receiving Tube Manual and it was 50 watts, RMS-still a solid performer for the time. I think the 500 watts was max draw at the wall plug

  42. First thoughts are Nothing beats good design in the first place If a design is lacking then both SS & Tube will not satisfy There is a place for both SS is best for high power needs, delivery speed and thrust applications most have a clinical sound signature, and low power A class designs can also be warm. But in general SS amps can be fatiguing after long periods of listening Tube is best for high efficiency systems, they have a sound signature that marries well with ones that a human body likes, that can be described as warm and pleasing And they are less fatiguing than SS amps

  44. As long as the image remains bright and keeps you happy, no need to rush into another purchase, whether bulb or new projector. Just a heads up about your PJ hours alert. It may shut down and not turn on once it reaches 2000 hours. Many do that. If that happens, just follow the procedure to reset the bulb hours back to zero and then keep using it until you decide the image is too dim, or because the bulb implodes. 😀 As that may happen at some point.
