  1. How about this. No negative comments allowed.(PM only if you must do so.) No questions/comments about price(PM only if you must) Yes words to encourage and or help facilitate the sale. Yes questions about condition, upgrades, shipping, and what all is included in sale if not stated. Bill

  2. Do you listen to all your records with about equal frequency? Mine have sort of organized themselves into about three groups: the ones I hardly ever play, which are a bit harder to reach, the main collection, which is alphabetically organized, and the "Top 40", which are the ones in heavier rotation. They fit in a single wooden box, which is very easy to reach, and isn't organized at all, because it's so easy to flip through just 30 or 40 records, and sometimes while looking for one favourite, another one catches my eye and I decide to play it first. That's the kind of little surprise that's enjoyable.

  3. I saw him live here in Belgium in Ghent, many years ago. I was seated high up and there, the sound was terrible, with the metal roofing vibrating with the music... But then Bruce sent the band off stage and what followed was 30 minutes of Bruce unplugged, going through his old catalog. I really enjoyed it. I've also listened to Springsteen's and Barack Obama's podcasts on Spotify, which is very informative. They are good friends and have a lot in common, for instance a messed up father son relationship.

  4. I disagree. Some folks, maybe even on this forum, have it out for others, and will try to sabotage the sale. Even when it is completely legit. I know, I have had that attempted on one of my items for sale a few years back. Bill

  5. Hey @Islander look at those plastic crates a little closer. The good old milk crates from the 70s were not even tall enough to cover the covers. Those are 13.5" cubed inside so you can stack them. I was moving out when I took the pic. Somebody posted about them here a couple years ago " S-Crates" they were $10 a piece when I got them. I can get about 100 in my cabinet then the others go in three 30" wide wooden crates that look better in the open. Did not want to haul the records in the good ones & the plastic ones will organize a closet sometime in the future. Decoupling the sub from the floor is a great thing, play with that when ever you do the "sub crawl".

  6. Home Depot sells crates like that for $8.50 in black. While the milk crates are just the right size to store LPs, over the years the plastic dries out and cracks. Plastic isn't the "forever material" that we used to think it was. Resin is even worse. I got a white resin patio furniture type bench, and after a few years you could snap parts off it easily, just using your fingers. Good thing it was only $5 from HD. As for more traditional materials, you can get various kinds of wooden boxes now, but they're nowhere as heavy duty as the old Coca-Cola boxes. Some of them are just stapled together, not even nailed. I bought one of these new wooden LP boxes (nailed together) made of "salvaged" wood. More like scrap wood, with knots and holes in it. Even so, it looked better than plastic for the living room, and as well as holding LPs, it makes an ideal perch for the right subwoofer, matching the left sub, which is on a low table. Having the subs about a foot above the floor, on thick neoprene pads, should reduce any floor bounce muddying the sound, plus it should prevent or greatly reduce any thudding bass notes going down through the floor to the neighbours below. Sometimes I listen to music at really late hours, so it's a consideration. The floor is thick concrete, but even so...

  10. Well my Luxman has a decent phono stage. Maybe as good as my NEC integrated had. Between going in silence here when I like and then spinning, let's me know, if was ever any doubt, vinyl prefer. Hope your New Year going well for you and your music.

  11. Absolutely agreed. No one wants or needs negative input for a sale. It's called respect. One isn't a hired advocate for who should buy what. Market and availability will dictate a price. The internet and Google are there and free to search.

  12. I will continue down the active bookshelf (monitor) path. Really liking the simplicity of what active setups have to offer (Powered speakers). I may try a DIY build or two this year. Bought a small CNC machine last year so going to focus primarily on audio projects this year with it. Will be thinning the herd as I have several things that are sitting idle that I no longer need.

  13. There is a certain satisfaction in getting the most out of the least, isn't there? Anyone should be able to make a $100K system sound great, but can you get 98% of the way there with $5K or less? That's a fun challenge.

  15. Bought a bunch of old records lately, the Springsteen LP being one of them. I guess this warrants getting a "Knosti" LP washer next. I think "dirt" accounts for some of he "distortion" here.

  16. The few I liked were ok over the airwaves. Most of us have surpassed what's needed to get decent sound from some artists. Steely Dan and the like plus other genres... some of us will never get the best sound out of those pressings! *@richieb Went to his second sold out show when he did the Born in the USA tour. Only after talking to him for almost five minutes a few nights earlier. Liked some off of Born to Run, then Thunder Rd? and Jungleland from an earlier one. Nils Lofgren was with him that night and onstage both. Clarence Clemmons was probably still in his prime and was literally twice as big as me standing there. It was a great show, just not my favorite music I had asked if he would do some early stuff he said yeah, and I enjoyed that part of it. Now thirty years later I had a foot tall stack of his LPs find their way to me, and will only play a couple of `em.

  19. Peak flux is proportional to the applied voltage and inversely proportional to the frequency and number of turns in the primary. The higher your flux is the more steel you need in the core in order to maintain flux density. The lower the frequency the bigger the transformer gets. Look at sinusoidal signals, say on a scope, I am sure you noticed that for lower frequencies you see more time between vertical divisions. So it takes longer in time for it to complete the full 360°waveform. So you need more energy in the transformer to maintain the waveform for a longer period of time. Tube selection is determined by the impedance ratio or primary impedance from a reflected load. For pentodes there is a sweet spot of load impedance for power vs distortion. For Triodes the higher the impedance the less distortion but lower the output power. And of course depending on your tube selection will tell you how much power out into a load you will have, this dictates the size of the transformer you need to select. The higher the power you have from the circuit the larger the output transformer you will need to accurately produce a 20Hz sine wave. Using an undersized transformer you can clearly see the flux density just falls apart on the trailing edge of the sine wave as it runs out of energy to accurately follow the transfer function of the sine wave. Basically it doesn't matter what topology, power is power and if your circuit can provide 100 watts of power and you decide you want to have low distortion down to 20Hz you need to select a transformer designed for the correct impedance ratio to load the tubes correctly and also one that is rated down to 20Hz for specified power. So say a push pull EL84 circuit is producing 17 watts of power into a 8k plate to plate load then you look for an 8k:8 output transformer for an 8 ohm speaker that can produce at 17 watts cleanly down to 20Hz. Usually you have a choice of output power and won't find exactly a 17 watt output transformer you select a 25 watt output transformer and you know you will never run out of energy in the output transformer to faithfully produce a 20Hz sine wave at 17 watts power. BTW for 8k:8 that's an impedance ratio of 1000:1 and a turn ratio of 31.6:1. For 17 watts into 8000 ohms we need an applied primary voltage of 373 volts. The secondary into 8 ohms is 11.66v. There is just no way a 15 watt output transformer can do what they claim, it's just impossible as size limits number of turns you can have and the size core you can have. I truly believe they are using peak power or some odd 'technique' of measuring power. There are books on how to calculate all this to design a properly sized transformer. It's not an easy subject.

  20. Hi all - just reporting back that I did in fact pick up the RF-3's over break to complete the 7.2 system. I did not mean to ghost you guys...I am just new to the forums and need to set up notifications I guess for replies. I wish I could have found a pair of RF-5s to perfectly match, but these RF-3s were in good shape and at a reasonable price. They did not come with feet however, so now I do have to figure out where to find some feet, which seem to be long out of production from what I can tell online. So I'm using RF-7s upfront, RF-5 for surround (5.1 content) and RF-3's in the rear (for 7.1 content). I will say only about 10% of my movie collection is 7.1, so while another pair of RF-5s would have been nice, it's really not a big deal at all. After having spent about 1.5 weeks with the RF-3s, I would say they blend with the overall system pretty well. I went from a Quintet IV 5.1 system to the current RF-7/5/3 lineup w/ 2x R-115sw...so just overall the sound improvement is huge. I almost have too much sound now and I believe the next step will need to be acoustical treatments, rather than more amps or speakers. I am also planning to build wood bases for the RF-5s and RF-3s, so that all tweeters are at the same height, with the RF-7s being the largest and sitting on the floor.

  21. A finished restoration project, a Sherwood S-7100A. Replaced all the electrolytic caps minus 1, the main PS filter capacitor which tested in spec with low ESR so from my experience it has a lot more life left in it. I have a new replacement I ordered but saw no need in replacing it. Checked alignment, cleaned all controls and gave it a thorough cleaning. The case is plywood with walnut veneer that is in really good shape but looked dry so I stained it and it came out looking great for it's age. Sounds really good with measured power of 22 watts at clipping 1000hz. Nice addition to my collection.

  22. Everything you say is true and I'm OK with it for as long as: 1) Many of the players would not be accepted to the universities they attend on academics alone so the University must ensure that the players leave the university better educated than when they arrived. It also gives many players the opportunity to leave their hometowns and experience college life. No one is being hoodwinked here. The University and scholarshipped player know exactly what the deal is. 2) The millions made by the University must be filtered down to fund sports such as fencing, swimming, etc. I believe this already being done 3) Some monies must be directed to the schools academics , infrastructure, research and controlling tuition costs Look at Penn State for example. I'm only familiar with it because my daughter went there. There was really nothing between Pittsburg and Philadelphia until State College and Penn State became what it is today. Why? Football. State College, for it's residents and those in surrounding towns, is the center and cause for everything. Entertainment, education, employment, shopping, healthcare Just visit the schools that have big football programs. They are beautiful my two cents

  25. Nothing wrong with tubes I think they're great. Over the last few months I've been carrying out a sort of simplification program. I stream-lined all my systems using the least amount of great measuring components possible, just a Pi running Volumio, a DAC, an amp and speakers. I even removed the hats from my Pi's and went to USB connects to the DACs. I'm using balanced connections were possible. I figure the fewer parts the better. In my mind what I'm trying to achieve is the theoretical but impossible "straight wire with gain". I'm pretty pleased with the results so far.

  26. Let's simplify the mechanisms. Phase shift is the time difference between two signals. Between the input to the filter networks to each output you will have phase shift, the largest at crossover frequencies. That means the output of the filter network is no longer on the same time domain. The speaker voice coil moves in response to the output from the filter network. At the crossover frequencies is where you will find two drivers contributing to the total acoustic output of the same frequencies, the phase shift between the two drivers means they will not reach their peak at the same time. That is all you really want in regard to phase, you want the leading edge of a transient wave form (square wave) to reach it's peak at the same time with both drivers. Both drivers will reach their peak excursion at the same time, that's the goal. The more phase shift between two drivers the longer the delay one reaches it's peak compared to the other. So constant delay, constant phase, all this terminology just gets confusing, all you need to do is remember you want each driver to reach it's peak for the same shared frequencies at the same time.

  27. Me too. A couple of times and it was the OTHER guys fault! 😱 I saw that but feel you did go a little overboard. My suggestion would've been to point out it was for a single speaker and let others judge if it was too much, but that's me. Ha--I wish! I had a 30 page thread that disappeared! Anyway, for some reason I still like coming here and it may be because of the drama along with some of the interesting folks I've met through the years. Happy New Year everyone!

  28. I have informally concluded that we live in a 2nd-order universe. That is to say, essentially every resonant system in our natural world can be described by a 2nd-order transfer function (or, if you prefer, a 2nd-order differential equation). I can't claim that it's always true, but it certainly seems to show up a lot in the real world. This is part of the reason that I object to extraordinarily steep, high-order crossover filters. I believe (without proof) that they sound increasingly unnatural as the order increases.

The decline has been swift since then. My friend is now faced with huge decisions regarding her spouse’s care. I asked her about the impact of Vietnam. She said the neurologist said there was no connection. I would respectfully disagree.

  36. Over the years, I've owned three Jaguars and now drive a Land Rover. For many, I'm an idiot because everyone "knows" they are oil-leaking pieces of junk that spend more time in the shop than they do on the road. The fact that this has not been my experience at all not withstanding, those beliefs are considered by many to be absolute truth and there are those who want to make sure others know that truth. I, for one, don't feel it is my place to correct anyone's thinking. There are, of course, exceptions (i.e. someone pointing a gun at their own head in the belief that .45 slug won't hurt them). I may offer an opinion or engage them in dialog, but I try to keep in mind that my obviously superior knowledge on any and every matter could be wrong. Unless the subject is bourbon. Anyone who doesn't agree that Wild Turkey 101 is the best bang for the buck just doesn't have their head on straight. 🥳

While it's tough to see what may have happened, isn't that why we do what we do in our spare time? Reach for fantastic sound? Bob should be congratulated on that, but I suspect someone will have to pay the piper for how it was marketed.
