  1. Looks great and seems to have great responses from those reviews. Funny, ikea is what I initially saw too. $4k for a new one? I don't have that much time left on the planet and I'm sure as heck not spending that much for a cart. Would love to own one though. Teasing George I'm assuming? lol 😂

  7. Low is the eleventh studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 14 January 1977 by RCA Records. After years of drug addiction when living in Los Angeles, Bowie moved to France in 1976 with his friend Iggy Pop to sober up. There, Bowie produced and co-wrote Pop's debut studio album, The Idiot, featuring sounds Bowie would explore on his next record. After completing The Idiot, Bowie began recording the first of three collaborations that became known as the Berlin Trilogy with American producer Tony Visconti and English musician Brian Eno. This is labelled the 45th anniversary Limited Edition and was made in Germany. Heard it long ago so almost HAD to jump. Some say it's in the All-time top 5. Side one is typically Bowie with a twist of Iggy Pop and It moves well then it's a flip to side two. Side two is a drastic change! A mix of Bowie & Brian Eno for sure. Side 2 is EXCELLENT! it's one of those put your feet up, kick back, sip on a drink and just let it all go. Kinda Pink Floydian sounding but not. Pretty freaking amazing side actually and I was left craving more and seeing how this lp COULD really be in the top 5. The combination of sides 1 and 2 are very different yet extremely gratifying. I'd recommend it just because it IS very different from the typical Bowie lp's. A "sober" side.

  8. High of 39 today so guess it's about time to fire up the blower. 3-4 inches here it looks like. Love this Cub Cadet 2X snow blower. Electric start so no pullin a rope even though there is one for backup. Cross my fingers every year and so far so good. Tomorrow the sky falls in w/highs in the low to mid 20's here in Duckburg. Guess it's not gonna melt off so gotta suit up! Winter seems to be here! Carry on!

  14. I got a PA5 just out of curiosity. For the last 3 years I've been running a pair of Papworth Audio Technology M100 monoblocks (4x KT90s per side for circa 100-120W) an amplifier designed by Tim de Paravacini which I first heard in the '90s loved, always wanted and I didn't really plan on changing them. A couple of weeks of back and forth listening on everything from Oscar Peterson to Nirvana via Streisand and Public Enemy and I had to get honest with myself. The M100s hit eBay and were gone in two days. The Topping grips the bass of the Forte IIIs tighter, delivering more texture and making them sound slightly deeper. Voices hang in discrete space, of which there suddenly seems to be more about. Some instruments which seemed locked to one speaker on a recording now seem to hover just free of the cabinet. Cymbals sound like they've been polished to a bright metallic sheen, but there's no spitiness or hardness. The background is jet black silence. There is simply no noise at all at any volume. I was about to say something about the PA5 limits, but given my distance of 13ft to the Fortes a quick calculation suggests near 100dB peaks at the MLP are consuming all of about 40W. Of course, I have immediately placed an order for another one so I can bi-amp each speaker... Russ

  19. @Dave1291 I also read it as Ikea at first glance Re - price - most people won’t spend that much on a TT let alone on a cartridge Re - David Bowie- Low - that is a great album and under rated in my opinion Re - Pink Floyd - that is my fav album Nothing wrong with Dark side just personal preference

  23. Well, for whatever reason I've not heard back from the seller since having a good text convo with him last evening. Kind of typical CL flakiness. In any event, partly out of planning for things to keep moving forward, partly out of boredom, I decided to see how the Cornwall's would look in their permanent home in my second system assuming that either this time, or at some point in the future I do end up with LaScala's. Overall, I'm quite pleased. They sound good, and fit fine even in the smaller space. And this will be the gear that will accompany them, while the main system will consist of MC30's. Those are currently back at Audio Classics, where they were recently purchased from, for repair and updates. Don't get me started. In the meantime, Allison One's being driven by a Mc MC2120 is in the main room. I won't bore you with pictures of that.

  24. The Aiyima amp arrived today and my first impressions are very positive. I haven't even been able to try it full out for fear it will annoy my neighbors in the apartment. I've been using my Marantz 1060 and most people who hear it with my Fortes describe it as being "warm". The chip amp is more detailed, which some might describe as less warm, but I don't hear it that way. And, percussive sounds are just incredible! Drums are crisp, cymbals sound live, bass is tight, and when Stevie Ray Vaughn hits a hard chord it isn't the least bit muddy or softened. Speaking of bass...on live recordings of an acoustic bass, you can hear the strings vibrate against the fretboard if the player doesn't lift their finger quickly. I was going to say, for $80 I'm blown away, but I wouldn't be the least bit disappointed if I had spent $1,000.

  26. thanks, i will check with a light but they look very solid & the glue is applied very liberally, oozes out an inch or more on all seams. ive used gorilla glue on a lot of speaker cabinets that were loose, KG,s subs & other brands, it works great but would require removing all the factory glue to work right. it will be awhile until i hook these up to test them for rattles & working drivers but the glue looks very solid still & hopefull there are no cabinet issues. i have walnut forte2 & walnut chorus2 & really prefer the wood veneer cabinets over black, so unless these impress me more than forte/chours they wont be keepers & will be put up for sale after i check them out & clean them up.

  27. When I had tried to research my Shiro guitar just after I bought it (about 15 years ago), I had a hard time finding much. Now there seems to be quite a bit out there. I just found this: " Shiro guitars were built by the Aria factories in Japan between the early 70's and early 80's. The company was named after the founder of Aria guitars, Mr Shiro Arai." I found some pictures of similar models from the early 70's that have the same headstock shape and truss rod cover, but include a Shiro label. They also appear to be slightly differently shaped. This makes me think the early prototype story may have some validity.

  30. Man it is! Almost as tender as a fillet and it's been frozen since the 2020 season that ended New Years Day 2021. Had a little too much red at 140 for my comfort so I had to put it back in the oven for a couple more minutes. If it was a NY Strip it would would be closer to the rare side of medium & not in a pan. Had eight slices and all those green beans filling my Fettuccini bowl, bubba tea and it went down so fast I hardly used the horseradish/mayo mix

  34. I'll have to spend some time with this little guy, but my quick initial thoughts are that it is VERY crispy up top, imaging and soundstage have shrunk from what I am used to and are more jumbled together, bass is pretty good, but again lighter and less extended than what I am used to. But that is compared to a $3k class A am. Now, being that this unit is 10X cheaper brand new, I might say I'M IMPRESSED so far. Granted my mogami balanced cables and kimber speaker cables both brighten things up. I may just switch filters in the DAC to tame that a touch. Solid work Topping. Quality feels nice as well.

  36. The best bet is to solder the ends of the wires together. That makes them much easier to push into those annoying spring terminals and pretty much eliminates the chance of a stray strand of wire causing a short. Failing that, at least twist the wires. You want every strand to go into the terminal, with none poking out sideways.

  39. After all the reviews and help on here, I think the UB820 is the player for me. I can buy new for under $500, so fits the budget nicely. The ub820 had 2 hdmi out’s, so why can’t I run and hdmi out to the tv and another out to the marantz?

  40. When you get the La Scala's listen to them for a bit before adding a subwoofer. I know you probably are against the subwoofer idea but hear me out. I listen to a lot of different music genres but the majority of time it's Classical and Jazz. With music where you do not think you need a subwoofer let me tell you they still can still greatly improve the sound. Do not cross the sub too high, most have a filter adjustment where you want the woofer to begin providing output, try between 40Hz-70Hz to see what works best. For reference La Scala is only good for 50Hz and up. Low A on a piano is 27.5Hz, low E on a 4 string Bass is 41Hz. You do not necessarily need to listen to EDM or Hip-Hop to need a subwoofer, since adding one with La Scala's it has greatly imporoved all music I have listened to especially at lower volumes. It just sounds MUCH fuller. After you are use to the sub try shutting it off, you will notice a big difference and instantly turn the subwoofer back on. My $.02

  41. If anyone is interested in the La Scala speakers they showed briefly in the video they were purchased by Jerry Garcia's mother as the bands first PA system in 66'/67'. Jerry later gave them to the Hell's Angels for their clubhouse system complete with a Sansui amplifier. Pretty darn neat right! https://insheepsclothinghifi.com/grateful-dead-hi-fi-auction/

  42. There's nothing wrong with your amp, IMHO, it's as capable of producing a well focused stereo image as any other modern-day amp.. I suggest repositioning the speakers and perhaps your listening chair/ sofa. ..And give thought to room treatments to manage reflections. Imaging has a lot more to do with room setup than it does amplifier choice. ..Now if you're just looking to change out your amp b/c you want something different to look at, play with, etc.. ..There's nothing wrong with that at all. But don't expect that alone will improve sound. If you do decide to change amps, I strongly recommend an integrated. These days, there's absolutely no reason to divide b/w two components that which can be combined into one. Today, integrated amps have S/N ratios, channel separations, and THD specs that are well below our hearing threshold. ..If you like the look of two components and you don't mind the jumble of additional cables, then fine. ..But it would be a mistake to think separates will sound better just because they are... well.... separates. Something people don't often consider with separates is that by having separate grounding points for both pre and power amp, and by introducing a pair of interconnects you potentiate hum/hiss issues that might not be there with an integrated. This was true for me! Both my Bryston (BP25 pre/ 3bsst amp) and my B&K (can't recall models) pre/power amp combos were plagued by hum issues that could only be dealt with by fiddling with position of the the interconnects. My three integrateds were much quieter w/ less fuss.

  43. I saw one pop up on usaudiomart a day ago and figured it might be a disgruntled owner selling it off after the confirmed performance review it just sold today for $1750. I am going to keep an eye on the market for one to see how low they drop in price. I doubt it will ever go low enough to where I will purchase one.

  45. Huh? We got a half inch of sleet, enough freezing rain for some icicles, then four or five inches blowing at 50 mph for a couple hours. And I'm at least 400 miles south of you. Roads are clearing better today and it is halfway gone now though. Yours will stay longer since you don't warm up as much. We'll hit 45 today! * Apologies to all the northerners who are used to feet of snow all the time in the winter.
