  2. Oh my . . . So this is what all the fuss was about. I do not have these dialed in. I don't have the entire signal chain clean either but I am floored. I gave the 2800 and another 300 for a Technics SL-1200MK2 with a Shure M44g cart and two thick 30ft Apature accu-flow cables. With speakons. Nicest guy I have ever met from a listing. He is tracking down two Plexi tops he had cut for them. I have no idea what I am doing I just know I want more! Thank you to everyone who nudged along this acquisition. I have a difficult time coming of my money. This feeling is like the first day of 60 deg weather after a long winter.

  5. So this is my 6Y6 amplifier, this is running in pentode operation. This tube is a real gem in this mode of operation, and has a few things about it that make is a true outlier. 1) It's plate impedance make it so you can use a 2.5K Hz primary on the output transformer. This is unique because this creates a lower winding ratio, which means you can put more windings on the same size core compared to other tubes that need a higher plate impedance that cause a higher winding ratio. 2) In pentode mode it makes about 4.5 watts of output power, this coupled with the low plate impedance and speaker above the range of 95dbs w/m make for a much solid base than is usually obtained by a single ended amplifier. 3) The 6Y6 doesn't need a great deal of voltage to drive it, less than 8 volts peak to peak, so you can operate a low Mu high Gm tube which gives a more laid back easy presentation to the music. Where higher Mu tubes usually have a more "glassy", or "edgy" type of sound. 4) A single ended amplifier based on the 6Y6, which has a maximum plate voltage of 200vdc can operate quite well at voltages even as low as 140vdc, which means you can make a power supply from a isolation transformer, but to get the decent wattage you need to have current in the range of 70ma per power tube, so the output transformers, and power supply need to be made to accommodate this, and higher Gm driver tubes feeding the 6Y6 will normally run higher that usual plate current as well. Therefore designing a power supply that can feed as much as 200ma is a good idea. The amplifier shown above is using a switch mode amplifier, that is very quiet. 5) Probably the most difficult thing about the 6Y6 is it requires more current on heaters, which made it unpopular with manufactures, that usually selected the 6V6, or 6F6 instead. Best of all though is this tube sounds wonderful, much more balanced than most single ended power tubes in the same wattage range.

  7. My red PA5 arrived a couple of days ago and got it hooked up this morning. In my case I am using it in my time alligned Klipschorn with K402s two channel setup. The PA5 is running the K402s with a Crown driving the bass bins and an Ashly 3.6 SP active crossover. I have been using a Schiit Aegir with the K402s since I got them. After spending a bit of time getting the levels correct and letting the PA5 play for an hour or so I sat down and did some listening along with my violinist wife. I played a variety of recording including orchestral recordings, and then went back to Aegir and listened again. My wife and I usually pretty much agree when listening to stereo stuff but in this case we were in total agreement. The Aegir came off as less detailed but with a warmer more pleasing soft sound. The PA5 was incredibly detailed. I could really hear articulations in brass and winds and background sounds popped right out. At first listen the Aegir sounded more corrct in how orchestral instruments should sound but after going back and forth a few times I think we both agreed the Aegir was coloring the sound while the PA5 was more neutral. Both are great amps and present a nice holographic sound stage. Either amp would keep me happy for a long time but right now the tiny PA5 is going to remain in the system for a while. The picture below shows how tiny this thing is, dwarfed by the Ashly and less than 1/4 the size of a small Sony blu ray player. $350 shipped from China, an astonishing value IMO!

  8. I have been amassing these amps since October of 2013 and just received the final one last week. The tower consists of 7-Crown K2's , 3-Crown K1's , 3-Crown D45's , and 2-Crown CT8150's. It also has 2-SurgeX SX-1120-RT's to protect the amps and an ADJ switch to control some external server rack fans in back just in case it does get a little warm in there .

  11. If you wish to understand (especially military) history reading books would be the preferred medium. Movies are entertainment subject to the bias of writers and directors. Telling a story and dispensing information are quite different. In my experience a career soldier would be the person to ask. I worked with a 25+ year retired Marine Corps Gunnery Sargent who was/is one of the best educated men I've ever met. His knowledge and ability to explain history w/o political coloration is unparalleled in my lifetime. His personal politics were unmistakable however his integrity with the historical facts was without reproach. A tough thing to do. He helped me understand a lot about Vietnam and it's root causes.

Used cars etc are up 30-40% I just purchased one for $5K more than it would have been a year ago To their credit, the Dealer fixed every single defect on the car inc new front engine seal It is a Buick Lucerne 42Kmi for $14.5 out the door Lexus es 350 equivalent is going for around 30K-35K Would have been $8-9K & $22-24k before 7-8 F2s were selling for $500-600 pre inflation So now I would ask $750-1000 for the pair Great speakers Compared to the alternatives, 750-1k is cheap

  18. I'm extremally happy with the quality of Qobuz, better than Amazon HQ and Tidal. HOWEVER, there user interface, exploring new music, etc. isn't as robust as Tidal or Spotify. I have not tried Roon yet, that's my next thing I'm going to try, but I heard that Qobuz with Roon is top notch.

  22. Circuit boards are the best option to put more SE tube amps into more peoples homes. I know it is asking a lot from Captain but lets hope he has the time to spare. All of the tube amps I have built are point to point working from a schematic but then I have an electronic background. The majority of members that visit this site do not or care to go done that road just like I would not know how or want to do the field they are in. But many of those members know how or have the ability learn to solder. Not much to it actually. Hold the iron on both parts you wish to connect until the parts melt the solder and not the other way around. They are the ones that might want to assemble their own amplifier. In a way the project would be a forum effort, as it has become a little bit now, contributing to Captain ideas for a somewhat joint effort with Captain doing all the heavy lifting. It will be fun seeing how this continues. A Klipsch Forum SET Amplifier.

  24. I was skeptical of streaming quality several years ago. But after a free 2 month trial subscription to Tidal's top tier and BluOS for the streamer there was no going back. On my system, IMO the sound quality is superior. (Check out my profile equipment list for all the other sources I use). The downside of Tidal? First, their search engine sucks. Lots of people say that Tidal doesn't have a lot of music they're looking for. Not necessarily true. Tidal's staff really needs to learn how to archive artist, composer, title & genre better. Classical recordings are particularly a mess. A lot of what you search for and can't find is because of the way Tidal has it cataloged, and how/what you entered for the search. Another thing is Iā€™ve found it easier to search and manage my lists using a browser as opposed to using the app on my tablet. The tablet and browser user interface do not look or interact the same way. They are very different, almost as if they were different platforms/services. Itā€™s often difficult to find certain music using the app, even if youā€™ve added it to some of your own lists. If you canā€™t find something try searching for it differently. Example: if you search ā€œCarmina Buranaā€ you are not going to get all Carmina Burana recordings because some dummy at Tidal will have cataloged some recordings with Carl Orff as the ā€œartistā€ when he is the composer. So you may have to search for the orchestra, or the conductor, or a main soloist, etc. It can get pretty messy and frustrating. But trust me, if you enter the search ā€œcorrectlyā€ (LOL) you WILL (most likely) find it. Thereā€™s also been a lot of complaining about Tidal & MQA. Iā€™ve even seen some idiots make stupid statements like ā€œTidalā€™s MQAā€. They really have nothing to do with each other. And as far as Tidal MQA goes, thereā€™s almost always a CD (non-MQA) version available as well as other versions. Some sound different, others I canā€™t tell. Some are worse, some *marginally* better. Donā€™t expect to get full hi-res resolution if youā€™re using a pc/browser for streaming. MQA will not completely ā€œunfoldā€ using a browser. And who knows what Windows/Apple OS and hardware is doing to the signal on the way to what ever youā€™re using. For me, the BluOS streamer (card) is in the amplifier so no extra cables or signal breaks either.

  27. The Viking Heart: How Scandinavians Conquered the World, by Arthur Herman. Seeing as how "Whether of Scandinavian descent or not, after all, one canā€™t help but wonder how a small group of Scandinavians perched on the outer edge of Europe could have had such an outsized influence on how European history unfolded." This just arrived, supposed to have a lot of shipbuilding history, including the invention of the square sale, a keel, large mast, etc.

  32. I've had pretty good results with Tidal HiFi, but lately I'm finding that more and more of their tracks are "remastered". And the quality of the remastering can vary considerably. For example, the other day I was listening to Crime of the Century and the low bass was gone. It was like everything below 60 Hz simply didn't exist.

  34. Hello, First let me preface this by saying I'm a complete newbie so I apologize if some of my terminology is wrong, or my explanation doesn't make sense. I had the Audioengine A5+ Wireless and while at first, they sounded a bit muddy to me I grew to love their sound and how it really surrounded you. Unfortunately, because of some nitpickiness I found a few issues with the A5+ that the Klipsch R-51PM shored up. Unfortunately, though while I love how crisp and clear stuff on the higher end is, they feel a bit empty by comparison - i.e., where the A5+ made it feel like I was surrounded by music the R-51PM didn't. I'm assuming this is an issue more about bass than anything, however I'm again new to this and don't know how much that would be affected by something like a subwoofer. With that said I come to my question... Would it be better to spend the ~400ish from the R-51PM and another ~300ish for the R-100SW which would be around ~700 or should I just get something like the RP-600M for ~600 with something like the Fosi Audio BT20A for about ~100 which would also be around ~700 (or if the RP-600M go on sale for cheaper then maybe something a bit more like the Fosi Audio DA2120D so that I can have a USB output as well for my PC). Originally, I was looking for powered speakers that would have as much functionality as possible but after getting a bit more comfortable from doing research about the cabling for something like an amp I thought it might be better to just get a nice pair of speakers and then add functionality through an amp or receiver and that it would be easier to upgrade the amp/receiver down the line than it would to add both as well as having to then add new speakers later on if I went with the R-51PM. I figured the RP-600M would be speakers I could keep more long-term since they're more about sound than features, whereas the R-51PM I was looking at from a more feature standpoint. So, I guess the question really is for the money which is better, the R-51PM with a subwoofer or the RP-600M without? I hear they are in two completely different leagues, but I'm curious just how much. Would the RP-600M have a fuller sound even over the R-51PM with the R-100SW subwoofer while still feeling clearer? Again, sorry about my terminology but I hope that makes sense. I'm still a newbie and just getting into this so I appreciate the help.

  38. There is another option that I am very surprised someone hasn't marketed already, especially Klipsch. PWK was a really big fan of the Brook 12a amplifier, I even heard rumors of a specific Klipsch model where it had a 'K' in the model number like 'Brook 12a k-1' or something along those lines where Paul had influenced the design, lower bandwidth I believe was the only difference but I have never seen one. There is also the rumor where that was really just Paul's own personal version of the Brook amplifier that he kept working for him for a very long time. The problem is this is push pull, well I guess not a problem really just a different direction. I also don't think PWK himself would object to a really good 15 watt single ended amplifier either. I guess I am just curious how many Klipsch fans out there would want the amplifier that the big guy himself PWK admired so much when paired with his beloved speakers. IF this went that route I may to keep the price down use 6AV5GA in triode mode instead of actual 2A3's. I have made this amplifier before and measurements were the same between the two and I personally didn't hear a difference either. The circuit is to thank for that. The 6J5 drivers will be replaced with a single 6SN7 which is electrically identical just two triodes in one bottle unlike the 6J5 single triode per bottle. Due to the rich history this would almost be a perfect 'forum' amplifier as it was Paul's favorite amp with his speakers. That says a lot.
