  2. Done with our chilly weather, 60s to 40s, 50s to 30s alternating this week. Had to open the windows for a last chance for fresh air before high humidity comes back 40% today and in the 40s. Cooked bacon, field peas, turnip greens and a big cornbread for hours earlier. Made it too hot in the kitchen so I evened out the temp here. Cool but I'll reheat the place treating my new-ish cast iron in a few.

  5. Bought a couple bags of Starbuck's Expresso so gonna change it up a bit when this front hits tomorrow. Had a weak moment going thru their drive thru for a coffee a couple weeks ago. THAT was a rare occasion but a coffee sounded good one day and there wasn't a mile long line of wimmen at their drive-thru. Rain today and then the snow starts rolls in for a couple days. "They're" saying 10-12 inches. This is the same way the "Blizzard of '78" hit the Northern part of Ohio. Mid 50's or so then the bottom fell out of it. Gonna FINALLY get to chew thru some snow w/that big blower I picked up. The black sheep of the hood is gonna do his drive and let these morons watch me. THEN I'm gonna put it back in the garage. hahaha Mr. nice guy is gonna do HIS thing and watch 'em work. Stay warm and safe, hammer the coffee, stoke the fire, sort thru some of those gold nuggets you have stashed and dump 'em for the big bucks. Nice twist too on the chaps with the sarong. You'll be the envy of the rodeo! Pics or it didn't happen! πŸ˜‚

  6. Mornin' all Bracing for winter. I hope it only lasts the 3 days predicted. Highs in the low 50's and lows .... well, cold... mid teens.I kinda expect the weather to be iffy for the next month. The gem show and rodeo are on.... then the gold tournament. Murphy, ya know Drinking a dark/light blend of beans this AM. A change up. We'll appreciate the lighter roasts when we're thru this bag.

  7. I recall Bowie being called glam-rock, think that was an alias also! Playing the blues, cause I've got some mixed in with the King Crimson cd's I have with me now. One has Albert King & Stevie Ray.... They were very good together. & of course you can get to the rest of it from that!

  10. I disagree, it will fit the bill very well for MUSIC. A sub that size with an 18 can be flat to 30 hz. with little EQ on the bottom and is a STEAL of a price. It adds almost 2 octaves of REAL, Low Distortion BASS to LSs. The lumber is worth the asking price for gosh sakes. Plus it won't need much power as it's pretty close to a LaScala in sensitivity. Stick it between 2 LaScalas with a good Sub Plate amp from Parts Express and rock you brains out!!!

  12. If these connectors will allow it I have migrated to fork crimp connectors for input hook ups. They have proven to not come loose on their own in my shop where frequent speaker changes would ruin banana plug connections. Bare wires and soldered bare wires have proven to be really bad about loosening on their own. You do your crimp right and tighten down on the fork connector and your problems are over.

  13. The cabinet looks too small to make much of a horn from a 18" driver. If you can get more info or what design it's based from could be of help.

  17. I can't remember when I last listened to U2's Boy. This is my original album from 1980, I think, because it doesn't have a barcode. This is when Bono sounded girlish, the Edge hadn't found his typical guitar sound yet, and they sounded a bit like punk too... When War is imminent, I play this record...

  18. Hello, This sub is under 30 minutes from me and under $300. Just picked up my La Scalas Sunday and would like to experience a sub with them. I was wondering if anyone might lend a knee jerk reaction to this thing. I could ask a few questions before going out to see it. Thank you

  20. I remember being invited to an Audio King store in the Twin Cities to listen to those. They were set up in a dedicated room that seated about 30 people and it was packed. My best friend and I went. They played demo scenes from a few different movies. It was pretty wild.

  22. I picked my subs 12 years ago, but back then SVS were really good. I opted to go another route because I got more bang for buck, but I nearly went with the SVS. I ended up with 6 18 inch CHT (Chase Home Theater) subs (I know overkill). These subs are extraordinary performers, but ugly. I have 2 CHT.2 which are 2 18 inch subs in one box powered by a Dayton SA amp. I also have 2 separate (separate enclosures) 18 inch subs (CHT.1) that I would be willing to sell cheap. You will need to get a new Dayton amp, and WAF is low but these will shatter your windows and go lower then pretty much any other sub. EDIT: The HSU are also very highly regarded. Over on AVS they had a bunch or head to head sub shoot outs, you might want to research them.

  23. I'm also interested in this topic. I bought a pair of 1986 raw birch La Scalas last summer which had been coated with polyurethane so that they had a light amber colour. However, the cabinets had been damaged. As part of the repair, I laminated new 3/8" baltic birch to to top, bottom, and sides. I plan to veneer and refinish the speakers this spring. I'm not at all confident that I'll be able to veneer the interior of the bass bin. For that reason, I've been thinking that I'll use a birch veneer over the front, top, bottom, and sides (but not the bass bin or rear of the speaker) and then try to stain it to match the colour of the bass bin. So far I've experimented with Watco Danish Oil in both Natural and Golden Oak shades but neither has been a good colour match. I'll try a few other stains to see if I can find one that's acceptable. But I wonder if I might not be better off just to apply a clear polyurethane and let time darken the colour? All comments are welcome.

  25. Welllllll, I think it's time for him to move on but if he doesn't do it now it might not happen. They finally had a decent year and everyone's happy. His recruiting isn't the best and he knows it. This year he had a veteran team but he knows that OSU is gonna gel next year. Losing a team to the NFL & graduation won't help. blue is gonna have a tougher time recruiting with a new coach but that could be a positive thing too. How many will hit the portal if he leaves? Another rebuilding year for a new coach will drive the fan base crazy. A new coach could help too. That remains to be seen. I know the entire family and the kids. His dad w/Bo for years, John, Jim and their lil sister. Great people but John's the coach not Jim. The timing was right for the Uni after Jimbo got canned. Former NFL coach now back home? Perfect and the Uni shelled out major dollars on a "come card." Ya NEVER bet on a come card when you gamble. I think he'll walk cause he knows what the future will be in Ann Arbor. Yea, they had a good season this year. Finally! They beat OSU and played some ball. Harbs is WAAAAAY OCD that's why he responds the way he does. He's always thinking about the next question in both his pressers and daily life. He can't respond properly to the initial question cause he's focused on the next one. He's always been that way. He's still a coach. Always ready with the next play or two and thinks that way. Jack was always like that in high school. He was a baller and taught his kids the same way. Great family though and whatever happens I wish him the best. Simple.

  29. SVS are excellent subs & with everything you mentioned above they are hard to beat for the price points, add to that the warranty is transferable, 1yr upgrade program, & they have the best customer service in the business, call them & a knowledgeable person picks up the phone on the 3 or 4th ring & will talk with you for a half hour if you need advice on which sub is best for your needs/room or for technical assistance before or after the sale... & they reply to emails in a day or 2! they also do large giveaways on their podcast once a month or so. yes there are "better" subs but SVS has a lot going for it other companies dont, & their performance is very good & competitive with many of the top brands out there. HSU is another good value to performance sub to consider. even the sb/pb1000pro is a great sub for ~$500. i own 2 sb2000 & they are very good subs, especially for their size, about a 14" cube, in a similar 15x21 room they are as much as i need to add the lower octave the chorus drop off at, great for music & movies. most people agree the sb/pb3000 is the best bang for the buck & has an app for smart phone controls. i am planning to upgrade to the sb3000 this year & will put the 2000s up for sale.

  30. Interesting listen last night. I picked up the 3-lp Bigger Bang live @ Copacabana Beach. Another re-master to add to the shelves BUT it hasn't been tucked away just yet. Hit it for the second time last night and thought it was even better than the first time thru. The Copacabana Beach show was a free concert, resulting in what was reportedly one of the largest crowds ever. β€œNot that we’re unused to playing some of the biggest shows in the world, but I must say Rio did take the cake,” Keith Richards said of the show in a statement. From Rolling Stone. Yup, they're still hangin in there like a rusty fish hook! Charlie WILL be missed though! HUGE CROWD! FREE SHOW? They still got it workin! Snag it if you're a Stones fan! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx3WxIgnitM Click it to win it! hahaha That's not happening. Naturally, it was released to youtube but no embedding here. Check it out!

  32. I've listened to both speakers in real , the Lpad on the JBL allows for a richer bass sound by taming the HF , Add a Quality Lpad to the CW IV and you can dial-in the same bass Characteristics

  38. Many 904 owners use Crown amps - K1/2 or Xls or ... Using the (lower watts; 450?) K1 in stereo mode myself. (Had a 100W Yamaha on it before.) Hard to improve upon these K1/2's. You can find two of these used for under $1000 - don't know how much improvement single mono units will give you

  39. the F series velodyne subs are very good & were top of the line in their day. i have owned a couple of the f1500 subs & even though the amps were lower power compared to todays subs they were amazing subs, if still in good working condition you cant really beat them for the used prices ive seen them for. the 1000 is a 10" but for $100 sounds like a good deal. be aware, these are servo controlled & if the woofer goes bad they are expensive to repair & hard to find a place to do it, a friend had a f1200 that blew the woofer & he replaced it with a different brand & it still sounded very good. the amps are usually pretty reliable unlike too many other newer brands.

  42. At the risk of repeating what others have already said, I find the BFM THT to be a perfect match to LaScala bass bins. I built a ~30" wide version. It hits 24hz in my room and can easily extend up to 80hz or higher, though I find better sound by EQing the LS bass bins flat down to about 50hz and letting the sub take over from there. The bass is deep, goes as loud as you want it to, and is CLEAN! No wooly or boomy bass at all. And when I say loud, I mean LOUD. You can literally shake pictures off the walls. Not kidding at all. The only sub I had in this system beforehand was a cheap bass-reflex 12"er that added more boominess than anything. The THT just sounds like you have a really big set of LS bass bins. Blends perfectly. The only downside I can think of is that they are HUGE and HEAVY, but that is true for any horn sub. I would love to have a second one, not for extra SPL but for smoothing the in-room response a bit. I would have a hard time finding space for a second one though. Maybe some day....
