  1. Howdy all, tipped to this thread by a Klipsch customer in Des Moines................. Been busy. A new review dropped either late Saturday or early Sunday over at Part-time Audiophile............ here is the link in case you have interest in reading. https://parttimeaudiophile.com/2022/01/28/toolshed-amps-transcendence-300b-amplifier-review/ Although the reviewer used a single, wide-band speaker, you all know I'm more of a Klipsch/Altec guy. Different strokes for different folks. It's all good. No hard feelings with Klipsch management about the Cary thing either........... Billy is a great guy and Cary has some decent product. Business is business. Cheers! Matt.

  10. Right, because I just make up random crap just to sell stuff. Look, I'm stuck with some Forte 3's at this point. I'd love to move them. I have also been lobbying for Klipsch to be able to provide an upgrade kit because I believe that Forte 3 owners should be able to get the better sound without having to buy Forte 4's. Literally, Klipsch, please make upgrade kits so I don't have to sell 4's to 3 owners. So there's that.

  12. Way ahead of you. bought a nice 2'x4' piece of birch plywood and a few different finishes last weekend. I'll start tomorrow. Currently leaning toward amber shellac, or possibly multiple coats of Danish Oil. Staining isn't out of the question, but doing it well on baltic birch is a multi-step process, and I'm not entirely partial to a nice stain job with exposed plywood edges. There's some figuring in the speaker wood...and I'm tempted to dye it to bring that out and then seal with poly or acrylic. But that's a bit risky...I don't have any real wood finishing experience. I keep going back to this video:

  14. Those guys are soooo underrated. Soooo much good stuff yet people just listen to their "hits" and skip the rest of the lp. Sad.

  15. Not only does the gasket provide an air tight seal and correct spacing between the driver and the horn; its inside diameter defines the design aperture for the throat. If you are operating for a while without the gasket in place, your throat aperture is larger than design, which means the horn produces less output level, which means you might turn it up to compensate but find the horn's relative level keeps sounding attenuated. Until you have a proper gasket in place with the right inner diameter, you might refrain from loud playing, and resist any loud testing or other exciting sonic experiments / investigations into why it might sound funny without the gasket.

  16. Hey Dave, I found Dion's latest album on Tidal and have listened to some songs and liked them. I almost posted one that caught my ear. This is the CD I have of Josh One. Came out in 2003 and I think I've had it since then. I see they have it on Vinyl too. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WOQ6LG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IV589X1YU5PJ&keywords=josh+one+grey+skies&qid=1643993993&sprefix=josh+one+grey+ski%2Caps%2C668&sr=8-1

  17. @Shiva get outta my head... 55 seconds into it and I was seriously listening. The more it went the more I was listening. Just hit my boys @ my record store and nada. So yea, ugh! Gonna have to nose a bit more now me thinks. Thanks! BTW you DO want to give Dion's new lp out. 82 years old and he pulled in the major guns on this lp. His second in two years, which is crazy in itself. It's killer imo. His first release is loooong gone so gonna jump on both of them IF I can find them. Thanks!

  23. Funny thing about A/B tests and Klipsch speakers... My very first pair were monstrous CF3's. I had only heard Klipsch bookshelf speakers before, I believe they were the RB35s at my brothers place. Was blown away that such a small pair of speaks could produce that sound. Not that volume, that sound. So when I saw a pair of Cherry CFs for sale on CList not ten mins from my crib I jumped. No idea what I was going to look at. I didn't know CF3 from a BM or a DC10. So I give a look and a listen and every bone in my body says, "You cannot possibly put these two phone-booths in your tiny condo irrespective of how they sound!" They were audible sex to be sure... just huge and gorgeous. (THE GUY PUT ON AN FM TALK RADIO STATION for the audition....what the hell?) So, I hem n haw. The the guy lowers his price. Hmmmm! Ten mins and one HIDEOUS offer from me later ($250) they're in HIS truck and he's following me to my crib to HELP me unload them. My bemused neighbors had NO idea what they were in for. Fast forward a year or so and I see a pair of Mint Walnut Fortes nearby ($400). Of course I go get em, STAT. I A/B them with my CF3's expecting them to sound better because by now I'm all over this forum reading all about Heritage, etc etc. So I'm ready to be blown away. I'm not. Don't get me wrong, the Fortes sounded positively fantastic, but better? No. DIFFERENT? Hell yes! So much for A/B settling the score once and for all. Then came the KG5.2's. Similar result. Then some KLF20s. Similar result. Then the Forte IIs. I didn't bother! I just hauled them into the bedroom and set em up. EVERY TIME I tried to validate a new purchase I've come away with a smile and the feeling that I didn't really need new speakers after all. But I never quit looking at CList! So now I have Cornwalls, KLF30s and CF3's along with a several others and I love them all. Do I prefer some? Yes. These Cornwalls are just sublime. But if I want to wake the dead? The KLF30s and a down-firing 15 inch sub (on a crawl space no less!) can really summon the cops FAST! Got a house now and there are Klipsch in every room but the crappers n kitchen. Too old to move all the crap around now and too blind to see all tiny crap on the back of my gear so that I CAN A/B them. I just hook em up and enjoy.

  25. And I'm very happy with the change. I originally came to lurk the forum for recapping my Heresys. Quickly got sucked in and now the Heresy is no longer recognizable. As for the caps, I initially went with the economical Solens, all the choices were bewildering. Did not notice much change from the 2 uf square black caps. Happy, but reading about all the caps, maybe things could be better. Was gathering my resources for some fancier caps, when Captain Beefheart provided a timely tip to the Russian NOS PIO caps on ebay, there are a few different sellers of the military surplus caps. They are priced even more economically than the Solens, but the shipping is of course more expensive. But ten days later they arrived on the doorstep on the earliest expected delivery date. I bought a large assortment so I could build every variation of the Heritage crossovers, and the ALK Universal. My first build is similar to the swamped type E used before with the Solens, but with the tweeter cap directly to the input instead via the T2A autoformer. Compared to the Solens, the Russian PIO caps are louder, more lively, and dynamic. The sound is fuller, has more body. I'm able to listen at louder volume. Still adjusting to the sound, and hope to tweak the voicing, balance as days go on, but extremely happy. I am now enjoying the music rather than listening for how it sounds, it is a more natural presentation, romantic, and reminiscent of the sound of my LaScalas new in 1981 which had the large PIO motor run caps on a Type AA. My Jones for fancy boutique caps has been satiated for now. Best part is these caps are even cheaper in price than the Solens. Highly recommended. Big thanks to @captainbeefheart and also to @Crankysoldermeister for his encouragement and helpful suggestion to forgo the woofer cap, that was also an easy noticeable change for the better.

  26. You're welcome, and you're right, you can spend endless time online, to the point where you're spending your music time with your attention focussed online instead. I have a hypothesis that humans aren't yet accustomed to the kind of stimulation provided by computer screens, so it's far too easy to become obsessed with them, and neglect more traditional and often more healthy forms of pleasure, like listening to music (not music videos!), and many other things. Those horns on my La Scala IIs are the K402 horns from the Jubilee. They are the tweeters, and cover both the mid and treble range. This is made possible by using the K-691 or older K-69-A wide-range compression drivers, which are usable from around 400 Hz to around 19 kHz. This allows the La Scalas (sometimes called JubScalas in this configuration) and Jubilees to be 2-way speakers, as the original Klipschorns were. By going 2-way instead of 3-way, one transition point is eliminated, which reduces distortion. As well, this is a bi-amped arrangement, with separate amplifier channels for bass and treble. This reduces harmonic distortion, since each amplifier channel carries only half the audio spectrum. Finally, instead of using a passive crossover, this setup uses an active electronic crossover, which not only allows for much more accurate correction of peaks and dips in the frequency response, it also allows for time alignment, with sounds from the shorter treble horn being delayed by a precise number of milliseconds, to match the timing of the sounds from the bass horn, for a more integrated and realistic sound. As you spend time here, you'll hear lots about the Jubilees. The older Pro Theater models were relatively affordable, but the new Jubilee is for those folks in higher than average tax brackets, unfortunately. However, a number of Forum members have the earlier models, and a few members have ordered The Jubilee, as the new and apparently ultimate version is called, so we'll begin to hear about them, once production starts and deliveries happen. The JubScala is a smaller and less expensive brother to the Jubilee, but if it's done right, it's not all that much less expensive than the big boy, plus as a home-assembled outfit, it doesn't come directly from Klipsch, and thus has no warranty or other similar benefits. Stay tuned, and you'll learn about all kinds of marvels, like the MWM, the Magnificent Woofing Machine. Seriously. Finally, as I tell everyone, save now for listening pleasure later. If something you desire (we're classy around here. We don't just wanna have better gear, we desire it, lol.) doesn't fit your budget, keep putting money into your hi-fi account until it does. Happy listening!

  27. I can't remember when I last listened to U2's Boy. This is my original album from 1980, I think, because it doesn't have a barcode. This is when Bono sounded girlish, the Edge hadn't found his typical guitar sound yet, and they sounded a bit like punk too... When War is imminent, I play this record...

  28. Interesting listen last night. I picked up the 3-lp Bigger Bang live @ Copacabana Beach. Another re-master to add to the shelves BUT it hasn't been tucked away just yet. Hit it for the second time last night and thought it was even better than the first time thru. The Copacabana Beach show was a free concert, resulting in what was reportedly one of the largest crowds ever. “Not that we’re unused to playing some of the biggest shows in the world, but I must say Rio did take the cake,” Keith Richards said of the show in a statement. From Rolling Stone. Yup, they're still hangin in there like a rusty fish hook! Charlie WILL be missed though! HUGE CROWD! FREE SHOW? They still got it workin! Snag it if you're a Stones fan! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kx3WxIgnitM Click it to win it! hahaha That's not happening. Naturally, it was released to youtube but no embedding here. Check it out!

  34. So the speakers themselves were not signed by PWK, just the labels? The labels can be attached to any Klipsch speakers. The k-Horns IMHO won't have that special value, since Mr. PWK did not sign them directly on the speakers.

  35. I know a guy who would be glad to do it. He has CNC for cutting plywood to 0.005" tolerance, so it would be a precision job. PM me and I'll put you in touch. My best friend/speaker builder was referring to MWMs bins for best bass, and my Quarter Pie system with K-402's and K1133 drivers with QSC waveguides/DE-250 tweeters, and NOT Cornscala D types!!

  36. Are they potentially worth more? Yes, but only with a story behind it, you can include in the sale the proper provenance to prove your story, and using professional services to provide the authentication. An auction house could help you get better market realization. In such a case, you would still be very likely to get back exactly what they were worth. Any top end you could receive would then go to pay yourself back for the the authenticators and auction services that allowed for your sale to gain any extra traction. In other words, unless you have the means to personally market these to 1000+ potential buyers who actually know and care who Paul W. Klipsch was, and you can prove some kind of personal connection, you will not receive much more than current market rate for you area. I still think this is all very cool though. Best of luck on what ever you decide to do. On a side note, I once had a guy ask me to put my signature on the the back of a pair of Klipsch speakers I refinished. I have to wonder what they are worth now?🤏

  38. Pat, that is a very funny and true story you tell. My last expensive digital gear was a Meridian G08 24 Bit player 20 years ago which still works well in my system but it is almost not used since I stream using my Node and its predecessors since almost 6 years. I bought the Node last year after a Node 2i and that after a Sonos. All bought new for less than 500€ and sold for more than 350€.

  39. At the jewelry store where I used to work I had a customer who was into Seikos. He had at least one Orange Monster and Grand Seiko. Really cool watches. He was into cars too so whenever he got a new car he'd stop by and we'd chat about watches and cars for an hour or two.

  42. “Old [Michael] went past the pet shop, which was never open, into the park, which was never closed, and the park was full of a very smooth, clean, green grass. So he took off all his clothes and began rubbing his flesh into the wet, clean, green grass. He accompanied himself with a little tune – it went like this.” Gabriel would briefly perform scat singing over Phil Collins’s drum accompaniment. “Beneath the ground, the dirty brown writhing things called ‘worms’ interpreted the pitter-patter from above as rainfall. Rainfall in worm-world means two things: mating and bath time. Both of these experiences were thoroughly enjoyable to the worm colony. Within seconds, the entire surface of the park was a mass of dirty, brown, soggy, writhing forms. “He was still pleased, old Michael, and he began whistling a tune this time to accompany himself.” Gabriel then briefly whistles the beginning of the hymn Jerusalem. ” ‘Jerusalem Boogie’ to us, perhaps. But to the birds it meant that supper was ready.”

  45. From my experience too hot a tip can be compensated with reduced contact time. Too low just results in cooking the components. I use three irons with building. A 40 watt for the big stuff, a 25 watt for normal, and a 12 watt for the delicate items. Always use Kester 63/37 for everything.
